I'm a food service manager at a children's shelter and I bought some dried grasshoppers to show the older kids that many cultures eat insects. But then I decided against showing them because the next thing you know, a child would start eating bugs on the playground and say that I had given them permission to do so. So I just ate them myself. Love your videos!

It's true and some grasshoppers are poisonous. As a culture we have lost the knowledge and it's nice the see the internet be used for something good like reviving lost knowledge. People also eat bugs from places that aren't a pool of toxins like play grounds or cities or any place humans have touched in the last 50 years. You literally can't grow food in the ground where humans live or eat from water humans have lived near. And we call bugs gross???

Well they only eat cereals (grains), hence their name. But anything taste like what it eats or where it lives, snails (escargo) are grown eating vegetable mulch and such but before they're "harvested" they're put on a clean diet to clean up their flavor. A lot of fish who live on the bottom (bottom feeders) can taste like mud or sand, which can be overpowering. Some say that farm raised fish also taste less than the wild fish, which I agree with. Like the saying goes, "You are what you eat."

Neo If you have them on oats, they will basically only eat the oats. I prefer to have them on organic soil without fertilizer so they eat more fruit which makes them more nutritious. They will eat most anything you put in there, but really juicy things like oranges will mold quickly. Potato and carrot are very common. I don’t eat them myself so I can’t vouch for the taste difference, but I can only assume a mealworm that eats different things will taste different! Though, idk if it will taste like the fruit it eats lol

@@IishTyto Exactly. I've heard the "nuttiness" comparison before, along with flavor profiles similar to almonds, in particular. Could it be as simple as switching it out with almond flour? If that's the case, I'd also be curious of something like a mealworm and white chocolate cookie.
@IishTyto

@@mildwonkey Same here, I've heard the same thing! I think, in terms of the flavor profile, it'd likely create a similar result - I'm just not familiar enough with the chemistry behind baking to know how much of what can be replaced lol. Peanut buttery when alive 🧐 I wonder if you could blend them raw (first kill them by freezing. BTW it has to be at least 48h, with 15min they are just asleep) and make a paste that’s nutty and like a peanut butter?? Would be great for those of us who don’t eat peanuts but miss PB! 😍

Susan Darby yes... unfortunately :( they are pretty good at staying alive in freezing and come back to life as soon as they thaw, so 48h ensures full death. But maybe she had those already frozen from days before I hope! :)

Thank you so much for this series! So informative, and I look forward to the rest of it. I'm actually a vegan, but perhaps a very strange one to a lot of people's minds; I think bug eating is a fantastic solution to the world's protein needs, due to the low environmental impact of their husbandry, the ease to which their care needs can be met, how easily they can be humanly killed, and the return rate of resources. So I'm incredibly happy to see someone like you providing people with so much information and encouraging so much open mindedness ^-^

All the people crying about her eating a live bug dont understand that it does instantly and that eating bugs is 10x more helpful to the environment then people constantly killing PLANTS AND OTHER ANIMALS for food because these bugs (and more) constantly grow at alarmingly fast rates making them an easy and abundant food source with alot of protein. Literally everything you do thats not living in the forest naked is hurting the earth and the creature. And this is coming from someone who isn't vegan or crazy about the environment and recycles like every 2 weeks if there's a bin.

It's incredibly unlikely that someone, somewhere in your lineage never ate bugs on a regular basis. I think it's something around 80% of the world that currently practices entomophagy in some form. So, no, if you've got any fraction of that 80% in you (and I can just about guarantee that you do) your ancestors did, in fact, eat bugs. Us folks in the west are just big babies and decided it was icky.

I agree with you, but eating an insect that size means that it's dispatched the second a person bites down. I don't think it experiences any more uncomfortable stimuli than if you were to prepare it by crushing its head before eating it.

@@Cocogomez I absolutely feel the same way, I like this channel and it bummed me out a little to see the mealworms eaten raw without killing them prior. "Eating a live bug" right there in the title is definitely going to get views, and while the motive behind that might disappoint me a little, at least this might lead to more people considering insects as a viable food source? Either way, I agree, and I hope people in general will consider taking more care in the future.
@Cocogomez

@@IishTyto I hope as well that this video will at least highlight that insects are a viable and sustainable source of nourishment for human beings. I wouldn't eat a once living creature myself, but the planet needs a shift from animal agriculture based protein, and insects could well be the solution.
@alexgade4512
@alexgade4512 5 жыл бұрын
A mealworm does not have the same response to pain as vertebrates do, they respond to stimuli. Due to the size of the mealworm, it being chewed would be the same thing like a human being crushed by a meteor. It dies in a split second. Stop shaming people. Also your logic applies to plants too. Plants are alive too, grass releases a specific scent after it's cut as a distress signal and yet we still cut it. So yeah.
