Yes, those two are brilliant songs. The Beatles covered "Roll Over Beethoven" too! Chuck was a naughty young man, a teenager in fact, no doubt thinking too much about [his]("My") Ding'a'Ling" but by the time he and his infectious tempo, energy, style and inimitable guitar chops, had filtered through the psychedelic 60s & early 70s he was a gentleman (with a dubious past that nobody talked too much about) who could stir up any crowd ( see "Long Live Rock 'n' Roll" - he gave us the beat 'n' he gave us the soul' ). His 50s hits ermbodied the constant whining of the new 'teenager' hood. No more deep broody hard drinkin' gamblin and womanizing bloooze men travellin' on that line, Chuck Berry sang in a higher register and moaned about gettin' a car somehow, dropping classes and scoring malt milkshakes before cuttin' up the dance floor with a bobby soxer named Nadine, Maybelline or was it "Carol"? ( Rolling Stones Covered that last one ) And here I was, about 12, getting into the Beatles just as their LAST album dropped - starting smoking just as Mick Jagger had us all focussed on how we [couldn't] Get No Satisfaction! Revamping all that teenage angst that Chuck had been wailing for the best part of a decade already (but with limited crossover to the cashed up hepped up white kids). And so I caught his 'twilight time' as he went around again warming up agead of the English Rock Bands. I had a lot of love for Chuck and while I went from Beatles & Stones to Led Zepplin, Deep Purple & Black Sabbath this man who straddled the divide between essentially acqoustic Blues and the full reverb and distortion effects of a Rock and Roll soundscape was a welcome addition in any line-up. CB was a legend not only in his lifetime but for most of his career!💕 As I grew I studied Chucks music and discovered the Blues and while I'm a British Australian I learned American history thru the blues and it's roots and I have immense respect for these iconic figures who's names get sketchier and sketchier as you go back... I hope you manage to defeat the orange tyrant once and for all, and his billionaire clique. Be wise be careful be safe. Take it easy on Biden, ultimately he isn't the one to reform the nation, he is however the one to transition you to a more youthful government. Time for you all to stop bawking at politically charged terms like Socialism for one thing, Secularism for another. And when covid has lost most of its sting, and th ee oldies come out to play, well let's just say some younger heads will get cracked for their almost callous imbecilic indifference to the pandemic! WE ARE LAUGHING AT YOU BUT WE ALSO WANT THE BEST FOR YOU - you may be 'exceptional' but you know that doesn't mean you have a monopoly on 'exceptionalism'. Look to Europe, Indo-China, and Australasia. Read some Chinese History! Keith was trying to add his idea's into the mix and got pretty much scolded and growled at and told he was just a ankle biting kid and to shut his trap and do as he is damn well told. I had never seen Keith so terrified and subserviant to anyone like he was to Chuck. He was apologising profusely to stop Chuck from raging and walking out on them. Chuck really was his idol.

@@theghost6412 Yeah, I know. Keith had a hard time keeping it together in Chuck's presence. Chuck really was the synthesizer of that style and knew it inside and out like nobody else ever could. The foundation of all rock'n'roll playing. I remember being blown away by how Chuck could improvise like that on that live album he made with the Steve Miller Band backing him up. Steve must have been astounded.

@@jillelliott8175 It is, Jill, but know that all the pioneers of 12 bar and blues were the poor black performers. they earned their stripes on the Chitlin circuit. The Beatles, Stones, Kinks (and Elvis) were the ones who exploited the music of those great performers, mainly due to the racial bans on "Negro" music being played on mainstream radio in the USA. As for the John Lennons, and Mick Jaggers, I would turn them down to get to meet Robert Johnson, Leadbelly, or any of the true pioneers.

You'd be surprised how many black people never heard of Chuck Berry or Little Richard or even Jimi Hendrix. I was literally shocked to see that at Chuck Berry s anniversary concert, not long before his death, there seemed to be literally not one single Black person in the entire audience besides his wife and kids. Now don't take what I'm about to say as gospel, it's just my shot at trying to explain this phenomenon ,but it seems like even though Rock n Roll was a genre that started in the African American community and was strongly rooted in the Blues, and it had a huge role in the Civil Rights Movement and in the process of integration, with even Martin Luther King Jr. himself recognizing the role it had played in bringing Black and White youth together and erasing racial boundaries, slowly but surely, as it became more and more popular and accepted by White people and it was adopted by a lot of White perfomers like Elvis or Bill Haley and his Comets, and later on the Stones and the Beatles, a lot of people in the Black community increasingly started to see it as "White people's music", they claimed Rock n Roll was "stolen" from them by the Whites, and slowly distanced themselves from it, to the point were they seemed to have completely forgotten their contributions to the creation of the genre, and by the early 70s there were barely any Black rock bands or musicians left except for the older, estabilished ones. And many musicians like Chuck Berry or Little Richard started to be seen as "sellouts" in the communities they came from. Even when Hendrix first came around he was looked upon with suspicion and even contempt by many in the black community, as a Black guy playing the White people 's music, even though that music was strongly rooted in the African-American Blues. I think the events of 1968, such as the assasination of MLK and the race riots and the climate of tension that followed, also put the final nail in the coffin for the early era of rock music, that had been charcaterized by intermixing between White and Black audiences and the blurring of racial lines, the killing of black audience member Meredith Hunter at the Altamont festival during the Rolling Stones set by members of the Hell's Angels, which had been hired to handle the security at the festival, surely didn't help the situation. I remember watching an interview with Jimmy Page about his early days touring in the US with the Yardbirds during the late 60s, and he said that at the first concerts he used to see a lot of Black people in the audience , but after the assasination of MLK there were no more Black people anywhere in the audience, something had changed after that point. Of course that's not to say there weren't exceptions still, Tina Turner always kept a rocky sound in her music throughout her entire career, there were some White groups that had Black members in them, genres like Funk Rock existed, there was the Afro Punk scene during the 70s, that sadly doesn t get talked about enough, Slash exists, and tons of other Black artists like Michael Jackson or Lenny Kravitz, incorporated rock influences and sounds in their music. But ye, this was my attempt at explaining this phenomenon. I think it's really good that so many young black reactors like India are discovering rock music, and even moreso, the Blues and African Americans roots of Rock music, and through this introducing other people in the Black community to these as well, so that hopefully we can finally do away with these stupid boundaries between "White music" and "black music", and people can finally understand that music is just music, and it has no colour.

I still didn't hear this until I was 24, and I listened to a lot of classics from the 30s on forward, there's just a LOT of good music out there, it turns out. Sometimes you miss some, and I can only imagine how it is for people who weren't living their high-school and college years diving into music made by some old farts from nearly a century ago (all due respect to old farts, they made great music).

I'm a 1978 baby. My daddy grew up in the hay day of Chuck Berry. By the time I was able to use a cassette tape and deck I had stolen all of my Daddy's Chuck Berry cassette tapes. I played them over and over until they broke and we had to go buy new ones. Chuck Berry is the reason that we have rock and roll and R&B he is the Pioneer of all of this. A lot of people give this credit to Elvis Presley but they are so wrong. Chuck Berry was the best and always will be. Rest in peace Chuck we all love you!

Hi India, what a fun react!!!! When Chuck Berry hit the airwaves in the late 1950's, he blew the lid off popular music in the USA! His guitar playing -- and authentic youth-oriented lyrics -- electrified audiences and defined what rock n' roll was to become for decades after. I get a kick out of the way Chuck plays his original recording of "Roll Over Beethoven" and gradually switches it to swing tempo halfway through the song!

I was one of the lucky one who got to see chuck play live. I was lucky to be raised in the st.louis metro area, and he would give a monthly concert at the blueberry hill in the central west end. He was better live, he would do his signature duck walk and always pour his all into his performance.

He made soloing on the guitar a regular element of rock music, and he brought an unprecedented swagger, flash, and personality to the whole game. This song is actually about a piano player named Johnnie Johnson. He changed the piano to a guitar in the song because it fit the story better. As he said "You can't put a piano in a gunny sack". Johnnie played on the studio version of the song. You should check it out sometime just to hear Johnnie play. He was amazing.

Hi India Chuck Berry was the greatest singer, songwriter, poet and rockabilly bluesman ever one of my all time favorites every rock n' roll guitar player has a little bit of Chuck Berry or Bo Diddley in them. Bo Diddley was another great guy to look into if you are interested.

This man was a legend. The Beach Boys song Do You Remember, mentions all the greats of Rock and Roll. They refer Chuck Berry as "the greatest thing to ever come along. He made the guitar pizza with the all time greatest song." They actually had to explain to Chuck what they meant by guitar pizza. He was told, everybody loves pizza. Everybody love Johnny B Goode.
