This song is actually about a piano player named Johnnie Johnson. Chuck said he changed the piano to a guitar because "You can't put a piano in a gunny sack." The story just worked better with a guitar player. Johnnie actually plays on most of Chuck's studio recordings and is credited with helping Chuck write the melodies to his songs. In fact, Chuck basically took over Johnnie's band. It used to be the Johnnie Johnson Trio back in the early 50's in St. Louis. They were a popular blues band and Chuck kept trying to join in with them. One night their regular guitar player couldn't make it and Johnnie let Chuck sit in. Johnnie said it was just magic. They totally clicked and Chuck was great on stage as an entertainer. Johnny recognized Chuck's exceptional charisma and basically stepped aside and let Chuck take over leadership of the group and put his name on it. I got most of that form a documentary about Chuck made in the mid 80's called Hail! Hail! Rock And Roll! It's fascinating, but a bit long to react to. Johnnie retired in 1973 but came back out of retirement for this documentary. This is a short clip of the two of them just fooling around during a break from shooting. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqfUiah-r92AipI Sorry for the novel but Chuck and Johnnie are among my favorite musicians, and I get a bit excited.

This man and his guitar changed rock and roll for ever. With out him we would probably of never had all that great guitar rock of the late 60s and 70s that lead to all the great rock we have up till this day. Sure there would have still been great rock and roll; but who knows if the electric guitar would have took center stage in most bands like it did?

"Johnny B. Goode" was ranked #7 on Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". This song was also sent into space, as it was included on the Voyager Golden Records on the two 1977 Voyager space probes. The Golden Records were recordings of 27 musical pieces by composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, various Eastern musical greats, and relative contemporaries like Blind Willie Johnson and Berry. The spacecrafts are now in interstellar space.

Chuck Berry said Sister Rosetta Tharpe (The Grandmother of Rock and Roll) inspired his use of the electric guitar and his whole stage performance began as an imitation of Rosetta's stage performances but Chuck eventually took it to the level shown in this performance....Few videos of Sister Tharpe exists but you need to give her your time...she was born in 1916...and because of her use of the electric guitar in her church performances it was so desirable she started a professional singing career along with her electric guitar.....Chuck Berry, Elvis, Led Zepplin and many others attribute their style of using guitar riffs were because of her....THANKS!.

The three great rock guitar pioneers who changed the sound of electric guitar, Chuck was the original guitar hero. Wrote the songs, played and was a great entertainer. Everyone came after him. The next was Jimi Hendrix, took guitar to the space age. Then Eddie Van Halen who took it to the next step. Everyone who plays rock guitar owes a Lot to Chuck. By the way, there is a NASA satellite out there with a disc with the sounds of earth on it in case an advanced civilization finds it. Johnny B Goode is on that disc. Can't beat that. Go Chuck!!

Chuck actually was a teacher in Chicago, I believe, before he became a musician. The moves across the stage by the guitarist with ACDC, Angus Young, were inspired by Chuck. Chuck was definitely a trendsetter and legend. You are doing some great music. Cheers from Canada

Chuck Berry was a huge influence for so many musicians that came after. The Beatles idolized him. And by the way, do you know how difficult it was for black musicians in 1958? In many parts of the country performances by black musicians were for divided audiences only, whites on one side, blacks on the other and they were not allowed to interact with white fans, or it was for black audiences only bec they were not allowed to perform for white audiences. This was just part of what black musicians had to endure in that time period. I don't know where he was in his career at this time but I'm sure he suffered a lot to get there

The Rock and rolls of that era was based quite a bit on the blues from Mississippi Delta Blues. and from the Black churches. and the people that promoted it like Chuck Berry. Jerry Lee Lewis. Fats Domino took it out of the Mississippi delta and the churches and exposed it to a wider and younger audience and called it rock and roll the soul music with such groups as the Four Tops, the Tempetations and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.
