I'm a long time late to this. But I'm sorry to tell you that I'm pretty sure you won't find a studio version of this as it's a cover of a David Bowie original. I know I'm prob not the first to let you know this either but still. Great reaction man, love your reaction to the rock scene in the 90s

Great reaction, please also try 'Where did you sleep last night?' from the same MTV unplugged concert. It's an old song made popular by Leadbelly's 1944 recording. A true classic and Kurt does it full justice with all the pain and sorrow a man can put in his voice. PS The late, great David Bowie wrote 'The man who sold the world' and released it in 1970.

Polo, for the studio version, you'll have to hear David Bowie's version as Nirvana is covering that song. It's great, it's Bowie. The vibe of the song is there, but Nirvana gives it something extra special and poignant. This is Nirvana's prime version of the song. As someone once mused, "David Bowie was so ahead of his time he covered Nirvana's song 23 years before it happened." Great reactions, dude. Peace.

This was a very unique choice for your first look at Nirvana. Their usual sound was a lot louder than this, though they did have some slower tracks. David Bowie wrote and sang the song first. The unplugged show used to be on mtv in the 90’s and 2000’s before MTV got taken over by reality tv. Many groups and artists would do versions of their hits or some deep cuts or covers, which Nirvana did on their performance. When you check out Nirvana next, check out a studio track like Lithium, Come As You are or In Bloom. That will give you a real taste of their true sound of grunge in the 90’s.

As a general introduction to Nirvana, you pretty much have to listen to Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, In Bloom, Lithium, Stay Away, Something In The Way, All Apologies, Rape Me, and Heart-Shaped Box. As someone that grew up with rock, these are definitely some of the songs that built the foundation of my love for rock/metal as a young man. I’m sure many other people are in the same boat. I still love them just as much as I did in the 90s. There’s other great Nirvana songs of course, but all of these songs are absolute gold. Sorry, my list started off with just like 3 songs but there’s too many good ones to limit it to just three haha. Love your channel man!

In my humble opinion, the best song from this Mtv Unplugged session of Nirvana is "My Girl". The song is their take of an old blues song by Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter called "Where did you sleep last night". Kurt straight up murders the vocals on it. So much pain in his voice.

I think to get a more complete feel for Nirvana you should check out "Breed" live at the Paramount in '91. That video really captures their sound and energy, the DGAF kinda punk, kinda grunge sound... The Man who sold the world is a cover of a David Bowie song, so you won't hear a studio version of Nirvana doing it. It was done for the MTV unplugged show and that was it. The entire show was amazing, but it really only shows a side of Nirvana rarely seen at that time. Smells like teen spirit was they're break out song that put them solidly on everyones radar. The "Come as you are" was another...hard to go really wrong with whatever you choose to react to.

Also I find it funny that you picked a rare song that doesn't include the very unique screaming that only Kurt could do. It's hard to describe the emotion that his voice carried when he would do that but it was powerful and it touched something deep inside your soul. Beautiful and tragic. Edit: I think the title for In the Pines may actually be Where did you Sleep Last Night. Also since you love story telling in songs may I recommend Carolina Drama by the Raconteurs? Nirvana Unplugged was a live concert on MTV. 90s MTV was a trip with the best music, Guns and Roses, Metallica, Nirvana, a slew of trance music like King of my Castle, Insomnia anything by Prodigy really and after hours weird cartoons on top of Beavis and Butthead, like Aeon Flux, The Maxx all from the MTV's Weird collection. All spaced out with artistic random visuals just for shits and giggles that were insanely creative. It was SO good before they ruined it with reality shows and all kinds of crap.

Great song - one of their best, in my opinion. As others have pointed out, this is a cover of a Bowie song, but it fits their style perfectly. That whole unplugged album is fire, BTW (which should surprise nobody because virtually everything MTV Unplugged touched turned to gold, like some sort of musical Midas). Check out “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” from that same performance... just be prepared to be blown away. If you want a track that really typifies Nirvana, then my money is on "Come as You Are." P.S. Nirvana is a grunge band, since you asked; Grunge is a type of alt rock that blew up in the early 90s, largely thanks to Nirvana, which is considered one of the big 4 Grunge bands coming out of the Seattle rock scene. The others are Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Sound Garden. These bands are pretty diverse sonically, seeing as Grunge was more of an aesthetic than a particular sound, but they all have something in common: each one was lead by a phenomenally talented lead singer. Four "once in a generation" type voices, all contemporaries - the early 90s was an incredible time for music.

Great reaction!! Believe it or not, this actually a David Bowie song, that they covered. Please, please, please....check out In Bloom. I'm not a Nirvana fan, but there are a few songs, this one included, that I do really like. Give it a listen...see what you think.

This version of " The man who sold the world" is better than the original by Bowie in my view . Also this is taken from the MTV unplugged series so was never going to be some crazy metal kinda gig.

I’m a huge David Bowie fan, but I agree. Nirvana version is better.
