liked and subscribed. thanks for doing this one. it was metallica's first video. they were always against the process until releasing this. it's amazing the following they got with zero radio play and no videos. this song was from their fourth album, and it was absolutely huge when it premiered on MTV. this was at a time when metal didn't get much play on MTV. it really paved the way for more metal bands to get their songs played, and for more people to hear it.

The book came first, set in WWI but written as an anti-war protest piece during WWII. It's one of those "read once, it'll change your life, but never again, because it'll fuck you up" situations. Really sad and disturbing, incredibly powerful.

The song wasn't based on it, the video used the footage from the movie because it had a similar theme to the song. Shot in black and white by director Michael Salomon. Due to routinely being required to pay royalty fees to continue showing the music video, Metallica bought the rights to the film.

Yo POLO, This was the first Metallica song that enjoyed a "tiny" bit of commercial success and airplay. This song was the first "heavy" metal song performed live at the Grammys. I was 12 or 13 at the time and already aware of what the PMRC was trying to do to hard rock and rap, because of this I got the feeling you get when you watch an underdog win the big game. I was so happy for the culture in general. The cutaways are indeed from a movie called JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN. The movie was based of the book by the same name. The storyline of the song is the storyline told in the book and movie. Fun Fact: The movie became much more well known, developing the status of a "cult" film classic. Metallica eventually bought the film rights in order to keep showing the music video without having to pay additional royalty fees. Cheers POLO.

Mine was megadeth. I had a neighbor that was years older than I was and he would blast this stuff out of his garage. My parents were always complaining about how loud it was. I remember being like 10 years old going up to him to ask about and the next 4 hours was him curating so much music for me to listen for the first time. Juiliard music school helped but let's be honest that without social media distractions people had more time to utilize their natural talent. If they lived today I fear they'd be too busy calling people "nootzies" on tiktok and Twitter for failing to be left of Lenin to ever create beauty musical or otherwise and they sure as hell wouldn't know war is bad... War is just what you do to wrong thinkers apparently or so I was told... I saw them live several times in the early 90’s. When they perform ONE it is intense. It’s like you are in the middle of a combat zone. The bass rattles you to your core. 30 years of listening to them & this song still sends chills down my spine. The line you couldn’t make out is Hetfield singing, “hold my breath as I wish for death.” The reason they are so appealing is their lyrics tell stories while their instruments convey raw emotion. You’ll find many of us that listen to metal also love rap. Another genre of story telling. Lars Ulrich is a master on drums. If you have a chance to see them, go. You won’t regret it.

Yeah man, the majority of metal heads I know, myself included, are also rap heads. The two genres are very much intertwined by a fan base that has the same tastes. And it works both ways too. I doubt there are many who went through it could honestly say that they were there for the greater good but, Iraq is different to Afghanistan. Regret? I'm 33 this song has been a life long favorite at the end she locks the locking hemostats on his breathing tube and he drifts off into death the guitar portrays so we'll the panic and anxiety he's feeling as he dies. I listened to this song a ton and used to love it just for the instrumentals. My english wasn't always great so I didn't pick up on the lyrics until way later in life and also saw the video. My friend Dave drove me to the local record store at the time so that we could purchase this record. It was actually 2 records, I at first couldn't understand how they had only 9 songs but needed two records to fit them. I, and basically all my friends were absolutely obsessed over And Justice For All, much like Master of Puppets before. To this day, I get chills from this video and song. Metallica is still my favorite band. It makes me happy to see folks seeing this for the first time all these years later and seeing what we saw. This song is a masterpiece.

This was my first Metal-CD I bought in 1988 when I was 14. And I bought 4 times more since then, because I wrecked them all from hearing it so much. And still I get goosebumps every time I see the video. "...and justice for all" changed my music taste.

He's saying "Hold my breath as I wish for death." I read the book Johnny Got His Gun many years ago then saw the movie. Its one of the best anti war stories out there and Metallica brilliantly brought the feelings in their music! They are amazing musicians!

Metallica released a VHS way back the day called "Two of One" where the band presents the song and video with full commentary of the inspiration for this song. We watched it so many times! Here at 50 and no longer a "metalhead" but I still listen to this one often enough. A masterpiece yes!

The song, according to Hetfield, was actually about his mother dying from cancer. She wouldnt accept treatment, because as a hardcore christian she didnt believe in medicine. The “it” in the title is her cancer. The message of the song is basically that he wants to be with her until she dies.

"Hold my breath as I wish for death, oh please God help me!" is the line you're trying to understand. The movie used, which this song was inspired by, is "Johnny Got His Gun". This song was actually Metallica's first foray into making music videos. A pretty interesting way to get into making videos. However, it makes you wonder what kind of videos would have been made for songs like "Master of Puppets" or "Creeping Death". I love the line the priest has, "He's the product of your profession, not mine." Another song that covers what Veterans feel like when coming back from war is Five Finger Death Punch's "Wrong Side of Heaven". That song hits me in the guts more than "One" does.

This song came out when I was in high school, it was my introduction to Metallica and heavy metal as a whole. I loved it, it was loud, it was fast, it was in your face. Now I'm 50 and a veteran. I spent 5 years of my life in the middle east witnessing first hand the atrocities that people can commit to each other and the result of it all. I can tell you right now, after not hearing this song for probably 30 years, it hits differently. It hits a whole lot deeper now than it did when I was just a kid and it was just loud, fast, and in your face.

So if you're interested in more stuff from that general era of theirs, one of my favorite tracks is Creeping Death from their Ride the Lightning album, it has less...flair to it, just gets right to the point of what they do best. If you want a classic song from them, one that is one of their best compositions of all time, I suggest Nothing Else Matters, from their self titled (Black) album. It'll hit ya in the feels big time.

As a guy who grew up in Metallica, Pantera, Led Zepplin, Black Sabbath, and Nirvana, I can confidently say that the first times one listens, and groks, these bands, one gets scarred. You look back at yourself later, and you find deep, permanent, discoloured grooves in your soul. You don't remember the pain of the growing and FEELING at the time, but, you end up understanding that this music forever altered the landscape of your spirit and mind. I, for one, feel blessed for the exposure and change.

What you gotta remember about Metallica and a lot of other thrash bands of their era is that they are a product of their time. These are the children of the Cold War. Where nuclear annihilation was a very real and constant threat. So they, in their early music especially, are totally anti war. This, Blackened, Disposable Heroes etc all have very strong anti war messages. Thrash and a few other metal genres were really the only musicians exploring the horrific consequences of war. Everything on the radio was “let’s party and have a good time” to distract from the dark reality of the times. If you got an anti war song on the radio it was candy coated in symbolism or platitudes. Metallica, on the other hand, wanted to rub peoples noses in the horror of war until they fucking did something about it.

this is 100% correct. and this goes for the thrash metal bands of the 80’s along with the earlier heavy metal bands that were coming out during the late 60’s and early 70’s, like black sabbath. the pioneers of metal had been born in the aftermath of the WWII and were now entering the time of the vietnam war, leading up to the cold war. from what i’ve heard when listening to different bands and songs, metal music has always been pretty anti-war.

Lars' drumming on this whole album mesmerized me and I wore out multiple cassettes visualizing each drum sound (I was too broke to buy an actual kit back then😂). Something happened when my dad died unexpectedly two years ago. I just wanted the pain to go away. I just wanted to erase his memory so the hurt could stop. I figured if I could obliterate myself on the daily, then somehow amnesia would make him go away. But he still haunts me. He is everywhere. He is in my dreams. I can still hear his laugh. He was my hero and my best friend. I'm pissed off at the fucking world. Kings never die and Titans don't fall, at least I always felt that way until I saw it happening in real life. The drugs I seek and take make me at least in that moment numb my reality. And I'm not using it as a crutch. I see the damage it is causing to my family, my marriage, and even my work. I need help. This song is special to me! I spent my life chasing adrenaline, I was riding bull's and was kicked at the base of the skull 💀 by that bull. I can remember part's from the arena, and the ambulance 🚑 ride going into the E.R. I couldn't move any longer from the neck down. I was in a drug induced coma for 6 day's, before they started bringing me out. The first 36hrs I was awake were hell. I didn't think I'd ever be able to move again, ever! The nightmares when I was in the coma were bad, but being awake and unable to move, were probably worse. Then after 48ish hrs. I began to get more and more of my feeling back in my arm's, and legs 🦵! Was released after 11days to a rehabilitation place. I was back riding bull's within 3 month's. I rode [roughstock] bull's, bareback, and saddle bronc, for another 2yrs until I gave it up to pursue my racing career!..smh..from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 🤠

Metallic a wrote the song in '88....I think. Video produced year later....'89. Metallica bought the rights to the movie after the video was made. They were tired of paying royalties every time the video aired because they didn't own the rights.
