He's tripping in his chair because this song is very personal to him. That's 100% raw emotion from him right there. It's so much more than just "feeling the music". The band didn't want this song on the album because of how personal it was to the singer but the record label pushed them to put it on

"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, in someone else's sky, but why, why, why can't it be mine?" It's one of the all-time great moments in any song IMO. Don't overanalyze lyrics especially when you aren't sure what they are. Just pay attention to the music which is the important part. Or at least read the lyrics as you listen.

The song is about the ending of a relationship. The love and the future that he thought he had with this girl has ended. Died, or turned to black. Nothingness. The line with children in it is just saying he can hear the children playing and being happy and he can't feel that way because he is just too sad or too black in his soul to feel that happiness of a child playing.✌

“I take a walk outside, I’m surrounded by, some kids at play. I can feel their laughter, so why do I seer?” (Notice that he said FEEL their laughter and not HEAR their laughter, although HEAR would have rhymed, FEEL proves the emotion further) Even in the environment of the purest joy that humanity has to offer, he’s still distraught by losing his relationship with her and can’t be shaken out of his sadness. That realization alone makes his thoughts spin further into his sadness.

The kid's laughter is just a representation of how life is going on and the world is still turning outside no matter how your own world has stopped when you're in deep pain and grieving a loss. I understood it this way the first time I heard this when it came out because the year before, I had suffered my first major loss in life - through a sudden, completely unexpected death. I remember the first time I walked outside after the phone call that changed my whole life forever, I saw people, cars moving, etc... It was such a surreal moment for me because all I could think was --- how the HELL is everything still going on in the world WITHOUT that person?!? Logically of course I knew no one knew of me, or my loss, or that it doesn't matter anyway because it was just one person who passes away, but part of me just could not understand. My whole world just 🛑 stopped. Like slammed into a brick wall and all reality I knew was different. I guess it's hard to explain of you've never suffered a loss like that but losing someone you loved more than your own life, whether through them leaving you, or actual death, will absolutely shake you like that. It's like a temporary loss of consciousness - pure shock - although you are physically walking and talking. But again, I always thought this was the feeling he was trying to convey - that although you inside are in massive pain, the rest of the world and it's people are oblivious and life goes on.
@Paula-qv6rj
@Paula-qv6rj 9 ай бұрын
I've gone through that after people have passed too. Everyone's lives are going on perfectly normal, while the bottom had just fallen out from under me leaving my entire existence changed. It happened after my father died, then my sisters, my best friend and then my mom. Nothing in my life felt normal after each of these losses and I literally felt like I was trying to walk through mud. It's been three years since my mom (Feb. 2020) and I'm still reeling. I still have no idea what my new normal is going to look like.

This song is about losing someone he loved, the sheets of empty canvas and untouched sheets of clay meaning that he is an artist now without a muse or without inspiration so they lay on touched. The sounds of laughter that he hears outside not bringing him out of the darkness, being surrounded by it but not being able to feel it. The darkness, the whole left inside after the breakdown of a relationship with someone that you loved.

Black's lyrics and true meaning all indicates that the song is about learning to "Let Go". We must accept when a relationship is over, we must let her go, to find love somewhere else, be someone else's sky. I know it hurts, that's why we vent our anger against God and the sky like in lyrics "Why? Why can't be mine?" And we fail to accept every single time while shouting "We belong together! We belong together" Maybe we don't belong together, after all. So that's why we have to learn "to let someone go".

For those who don't know. This song is (according to Eddie himself) about his first love. The part about the kids is just to show that even laughing children couldn't cheer him up anymore. Pictures faded to black means the memory of their relationship is stained....their love died out. And then the last part is quite self explainatory: I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky, but why can't it be, why can't it be mine. She moved on and he wishes they were still together. He misses her dearly. So yeah. A rather emotional love song. And may I add, one of the best of all times. It's just such a good song. He sings it with such unrivaled passion and pain. This version is simply perfect.

@@jen9731 Sorry to hear of your lost love Jen. But if may be so free to give you my advise, you should move on. 11 years is a long long time. We only live once you know. If the guy left you, you might wonder if it was real love, because if people truly love eachother they don't leave eachother. I do feel your pain but it's time to chose for yourself instead of living in the past over a guy that left. I know you can do it!

Very glad you liked the song and video. I was fortunate to watch this live on MTV back in 92 when it aired. I've been lucky enough to see Pearl Jam live many times through the years. As far as the song goes, if you get a chance, listen to the lyrics once again. This song is "loosely" based on a relationship in Eddie Vedder's past. But this song is wholly about unrequited love. Most, if not all of us, have felt the emotions that are so prevalent in this song at one time or another in our lives. And Eddie Vedder's performance in this song highlights those emotions so well. The verse that you seem to pick up on (and others have mentioned it) is "I take a walk outside. I'm surrounded by some kids at play. I can feel their laughter. So why do I sear?" Much as others have commented, this is a simple way to explain something that "should" make you happy (children playing and laughing) but instead makes you miserable because of your state of mind at the time. But I would argue the most emotional line of this song (and one of the most emotional lines of any song) is in the last bridge... "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a star, In somebody else's sky but why, why, why can't it be, oh can't it be mine????" That line in itself is heartbreaking but the pure emotion that Eddie Vedder puts behind it makes you "feel" that emotion as if it were happening to you. Which in most cases it has happened to most of us at least once in our life. Most everyone knows the feeling of a "love gone bad" and the emotional heartache that follows. This song is exactly that. Once again. Glad you enjoyed it. I "personally' think this is the best version of the song due to the raw emotions that he is able to display. But, the studio version off of "Ten" is just as heartbreaking when you hear it. There isn't a bad song off of the album "Ten". If you get the time, it's well worth a listen. Take care my friends. Look forward to more videos.

Totally agree! That line “I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life / I know someday you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky / But why… why can’t it be mmiiiiiiiiine?…” is what sold be on Pearl Jam. I think that line and some of the lyrics to “Better Man” are some of the most powerful poetry ever put into rock music. And that is saying a lot.

One of the most unique things about the grunge era was how they spoke about their personal trauma. Whether it was Eddy Vetter, Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain or the great Chris Cornell, they all probably put more emotion into their songs and performances than I’ve ever seen anywhere. Supposedly, this was about Eddie Vedder‘s first marriage and his divorce. Haven’t seen the documentary but apparently there was a short one on it somewhere. And yes this is one of the greatest live performances of all time.
