What I've heard is that the Simon & Garfunkel version is a gentle warning; Disturbed's version is 'I'm mad you haven't listed to the warning' and the Pentatonix version is the hope that we can still make things right.
@paulavitoria1798 Жыл бұрын
I almost agree with you; only I don't think the original S&G rendition is a warning, because it's way too sad to be just that - more an acknowledgment of what society was doing to itself, already in the 60's...
@dakker5292 Жыл бұрын
@@paulavitoria1798 Makes sense. Perhaps a better way of looking at it is that S&G is a sad and gentle acknowledgment that we've got problems; Disturbed is very angry guy scream "Why the f*** haven't you listened the problems are worse now!!!" and Pentatonix is the hope that there's still time to get things right.

Welcome to Pentatonix (PTX)! This group is really incredible the way they blend, and create fantastic 5 part harmonies. They do mostly pop genre and LOTS of Christmas...in fact they have some 6 Christmas albums out as well as 5 "regular" albums. ( yes, the beatboxer Kevin Olusola, sings and is a tenor) and yet each one of them is capable vocally of making solos. The members are: ~1st Singer: Scott Hoying, baritone. Scott fills in the bass when the bass singer takes a verse or the lead. ~ 2nd Singer: Mitch Grassi, countertenor. Mitch has a very clear, angelic voice and a 6 octave range. He can go into soprano...and frequently does! ~ 3rd singer: Matt Sallee, lyric baritone. Matt has like all the group, a 4 octave range and has a beautiful warm bass. he took over the bass when Avi Kaplan ( the group's original basso profundo) left amicably for personal reasons in 2017. ~ 4th singer, Kirstin (Kirstie) Maldonado, mezzo soprano. Kirstie has a lovely bright voice and a warm lower register. ~5th member, Kevin Olusola, beatboxer, tenor, cellist. Kevin doesn't often get to sing alone ( he does fill in harmonies when not actively beatboxing) and has a really sweet tenor voice and falsetto. Occasionally the group uses instruments ( especially lately when they did their last Christmas album) and usually you will see the instrument...Kevin on his cello... or once, Scott on piano in the video. The group prizes itself on not using much post production on their voices. They can produce exactly the same sound live as they have in their official videos. There's no autotune, but I do believe they use Melodyne for some effects and a bit of reverb. Some suggestions on what to check out next: Daft Punk medley, Hallelujah, Bohemian Rhapsody, Coffee In Bed ( original), Run To You (original), Mad World, Love Again (original), Shallow, New Rules/I Am That Somebody, 90's Dance Medley, Evolution of Michael Jackson. I subbed for more Pentatonix.

So I first saw Pentatonix on the Sing Off which was an acapella competition show and they were brand new. Like literally just formed before the show and it was all live performances and they won me over so quickly. They won their season, obviously, and what did it was their vocal chemistry, their instinct for putting together innovative, interesting arrangements, and their secret weapons Avi (the bass man) and Kevin (the sound machine). Avi left and Matt is the bass man now and he's just as talented but they really help fill out the group's sound. Even the judges on the Sing Off commented about their ability to create a wall of sound with just 5 voices. I don't follow them as closely as a lot of their fans but they're definitely a group with getting into. It's kind of unreal what they can do. And they've won multiple deserved Grammys for their efforts too. Probably the most successful acapella group that's ever existed.

Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! I'm sure others have mentioned these songs to check out, but some of my favorites: "Bohemian Rhapsody" -- Mitch's "guitar solo" and incredible beatboxing from Kevin. Would make Freddie Mercury proud. "Imagine" - the famous PTX "wall of sound", and an incredible video "Shallow" (from a Star is Born) and "Say Something" - Kevin "celloboxing" (yes, beatboxing and playing cello AT THE SAME TIME) "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (from the Lion King) - some great "beat drops" from Kevin; Mitch's insanely high note "Amazing Grace" - Mitch's gorgeous lower register, Kirstie's soaring solo "The Prayer" - more of Mitch's angelic singing; more of the "wall of sound", Matt's incredible bass notes. Fantastic Christmas renditions: "Carol of the Bells", "Little Drummer Boy", "Mary, Did You Know" And while they are best known for covers, they also have some great originals: "Run To You" - 5-part harmony that is just stunning. "Thank You" - be sure to pay attention to the masterful lyrics. And while this is "technically" a Christmas song, I think it's good to listen to anytime (I still tear up every time I hear it -- in a good way!) "Love Me When I Don't"

Pentatonix are the best a cappella band in the world in my opinion. They launched as a band in 2011 when they won the third season of the Sing-off a capella competition. They are absolutely huge now. I saw them live in London for the first time in May and it was the best thing I have ever heard live. They sing absolutely amazing live. You can hear some of their live versions of songs on KZbin. Watch their video version of Hallelujah - it has over 700 MILLION views. ALso see their live version of it so you can hear the difference (not very!). Also their version of the Prayer is extraordinary. They have won 3 Grammys and even had a category created just for them. I always tell newbies to watch their Daft Punk medley which they won their first Grammy for. It was made in the kitchen of one of their flats for around $400. The guy with the angelic voice is Mitch and we talk about people being 'Mitch-slapped' when they are bowled over by his incredible counter tenor voice. Mitch, Kirstie and Scott (tall, blonde baritone) have been friends since they were children and they sang together in high school. They found Kevin on KZbin where he was beatboxing and playing the cello at the same time (and he sings beautifully too!) and their original bass, Avi was a friend of a friend. They needed at least five members to enter the Sing off competition. Avi left amicably for personal reasons in 2017 and has a fab solo career now and their bass since then (and in this one), Matt (far left) joined that year. Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole! They are known for their covers and Christmas music but their originals are incredible and much under-rated. Enjoy!😃

@@nickforell1 Pentatonix completely revolutionized the acapella genre in 2011 when they won NBC's show 'The Sing Off'. They are without a doubt the highest selling acapella group in history and are the proud owners of 3 Grammys. Scott (tall blond baritone), Mitch (hooped earrings contra-tenor) and Kirstin (soprano) have performed together since high school in Arlington, TX. They added Kevin Olusola (beatboxer) and Avi Kaplan (original bass and only member change replaced by Matt Sallee seen here in 2017) in order to meet the 5 member minimum for the tv show. While there is some post treatment on this and most of their studio recordings for the most part it is very minimal. Other than reverb and some doubling there are no vocal effects such as autotune. Occasionally they will also include a cello (played by Kevin) but it is always plainly visible. They have always been very adamant that whatever they record they are able to perform live, as can be confirmed with the many live videos here on YT.

Pentatonix They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”. Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair)(Not in this video) , true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese). Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma. While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live. Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers. But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label. They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys. Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry. Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group. If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently. After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre. Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. A good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/ Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work. Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place. They have Grammy wins for Daft Punk Medley, Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Jolene featuring Dolly Parton. They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win. Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021. Mid March 2023 Kirstie has announced that she is engaged to Ben Hausdorff, their videographer. No dates YET! They have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame installed in February 2023. They are the only a capella group with a star! They came 3rd in the 2023 Masked Singer performing as "California Rolls" being unmasked in May 23. Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!! 1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to. 2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the official video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album. 3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

Welcome to the long winding road of Pentatonix, you are in for the journey of your life 😊 Pentatonix never ceases to amaze me, at just how incredibly talented they are, and take their voices to newer levels, we have never heard before.....there is something so special about their ability, to tell the songs story, allowing us to listen with a new perspective, and hear & feel emotions, we may not have heard from the original artist 💖💖💖 Not only their voices, but their delivery is also their gift! Just for their versatility alone, I would love you to react to their cover of Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Evolution of Michael Jackson, Creep, Say Something, Daft Punk, & their live version of Hallelujah, just so you can see that they are even better live, which is hard to believe, but they actually are 😊

Some 300 plus songs in their catalogue - covers and originals. Always great. Only change across the years was the original bass went solo. New bass has such a velvety resonance to his voice they use him differently from the original who is a basso profundo. Both impacted the group in wonderful ways.

While there is some minor tweaking in post (reverb, separation, etc.) this is very much what Pentatonix sounds like when performing live. A concert they did at the Hollywood Bowl in Sept. 2022 was their first concert out of lockdown, and there are a number of videos on Miles Reuben's channel taken from a livestream of the concert. They performed this song there, here's the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXzLcqyEi5Vqgtk An almost perfect comparison of what PTX sounds like in studio vs live can be found with their cover of Hallelujah. The official video is the studio audio that they are lip synching to in the video (as is the case with all of their "official" videos), but there is also a live version that they performed for a small studio audience for their 2016 Christmas TV special that was filmed only a couple of months later. The official video is easy enough to find (it's their most popular video, with over 700 MILLION views), here's a link to the live version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/npKpeaWcost7mMU

Other Pentatonix songs I recommend: • "Hallelujah" • "The Prayer" • "Seasons of Love" (Preferably the live version) • "Run To You" (An original) • "Thank You" (Another original, written by Scott and his then fiancé, Mark Manio, about how much easier it was for them to get through COVID lockdown together. Also not a cappella.) • "O Come All Ye Faithful" • "Imagine" (The official video) • "Bohemian Rhapsody"

New subscriber, always happy to find a brand new PTX reactor, welcome to the family! Others have covered a bit of their history and recommended songs to get you introduced to them, so I’ll offer something else. Their label is quick to claim copyright. Other reactors have had success by using filters or text overlays on the videos to alter the visual clues used by the trackers. We don’t mind in the least. We’ve seen these videos dozens of times, and we’re most interested in your reaction. As long as you can see it clearly, we’re good. And I can’t resist after all - try their Daft Punk medley (first Grammy), John Lennon’s Imagine (official video, please), Bohemian Rhapsody, Mad World, Come Along and maybe Sing or Coffee in Bed for an original example. As I'm sure many have said already, they really do sound incredibly similar live, ofc the sound is a little polished and cleaned up in post but I think it's their policy not to do any arrangements that they can't perform live. I went to see them earlier this year and they did this song, it was amazing and so so close to the recording with just a few fun flourishes added in to change it up here and there, which to me as someone who basically knows the sound of the album track by heart is great fun and a nice way of showing off that it really IS all live. I'd be super excited to see you go down the Ptx rabbit hole in the future!!

Queen's Brian May posted Bohemian Rhapsody with the comment 'I'll just leave this here for you all'. Pentatonix are just on another level and sound exactly the same live, Kevin the beat boxer may layer his sounds on a recording but it is absolutely all him. I'm subbing for more Pentatonix because I love to see peoples reactions when they hear songs for the first time and it dawns on them that there isn't a single musical instrument other than their voices.

More PTX, please. Might I suggest Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah or Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Unlike many bands they have had only one change in members in almost 12 years. Their original bass left in 2017 for family and mental health reasons, although you may wonder about the chameleons Mitch the countertenor and Kirstie the mezzo soprano. FYI, that's KIRSTIE, not Kristie.

They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America's Got Talent as non-competitors a couple of years after that. The founding members are:- Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass. Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five-to-six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead); Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhvmes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also. She just got engaged. Mitch Grassi (a true contra-tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease); and Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world-class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre-med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese. Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on KZbin, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga's "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings. Scott & Kirstie (who were a class vear ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC. While at USC, Scott joined a USC-based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition. They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi's performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his KZbin videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello-Boxing". Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re-arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five-piece group for less that 24 hours! They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on KZbin), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building. But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn't think an a cappella group could sell records. Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on KZbin, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them but when their cover of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super-viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony's top label. They do sound exactly like this live. They are amazing! In case you haven't gotten the introduction yet... Scott Hoying is the baritone that leads this song off, he also covers bass in some songs. The next singer is Mitch Grassi who is a contra tenor with an astounding 6 octave range (6+1, actually), Kirstin Maldanado is a mezzo-soprano who can really belt out those high notes without ever sounding strained or screechy. The beatboxer, Kevin Olusola, is also an accomplished cellist and has a beautiful tenor voice. The bass is Matt Salee. He joined the group in 2017 and kind of changed the dynamic of the group (in a good way). If you listen to their stuff from 2017 and before, the bass is Avi Kaplan (actually a basso profundo), who left the group for family reasons. He will make your speakers vibrate when he hits those low tones!
