The beauty of this song is that she is the sidechick with low self esteem. Then halfway through it she learns her worth and the song goes from "why don't you stay here with me" to "stay where ur at because I deserve better". This is classic storytelling. My favorite song from them.

There was no indication in any of the reports on her own divorce that infidelity played any part. The pain of her own breakup no doubt informed her very real pain during filming. Bush says they often got odd looks from audience members wondering whether the song had anything to do with his and Nettles’ relationship. Bush is married and says his relationship with Nettles is a brother-sister relationship. His “big brother” instincts came out when they taped the video for “Stay,” as Nettles became overwhelmingly emotional. Bush recalls, “Immediately, I was just like, ’Everybody stop. Stop this! Y’all leave the room. Y’all made her cry.’ I was like a knuckle-draggin’ dad or a husband or something. I was really freaked out.” He went to console Nettles, who had stepped out of the room, and offered to send everyone home, saying they could continue taping the following day. But Nettles assured him she was fine and continued to cry during the next three takes, making it hard for Bush to watch. “About that time, I’m spent,” he said. “It’s not even noon and I’m emotionally drained. They had to tie me down to watch all of this happen. It was like watching someone torture your friend.” Little backstory on making of the video

Wickipedia says: According to Nettles, "Stay" was inspired by Reba McEntire's 1986 single "Whoever's in New England", a ballad in which a wife addresses her unfaithful husband.[1] After hearing the song, Nettles thought that it would be an original approach to take the perspective of the "other woman" (i.e., the mistress), as very few country songs had ever done so.[1][3] Once she decided to take that perspective, the song "practically wrote itself".[1] The melody is similar to the Lonestar song "I'm Already There."

A lot of people think about her as a "homewrecking other woman", but nobody ever thinks that she's a victim in this as well as the guy's wife. This guy laid on the charm and told her he loved her. He made her feel special and probably told her that he was separated from his wife or in the process of a divorce and that he truly loved her. She fell in love with him and want's nothing more that to be with him. Now she's coming to the realization that he's just playing her and never intended her to be anything other than the "side chick". That's why in the third verse she tells him she "up off her knees " (standing up for herself) and that he should just stay with his wife because she's better than being the "side chick." That doesn't mean it doesn't hurt or that she isn't heartbroken. It's just she can't keep loving someone that doesn't truly love her.

However much we can dismiss her for getting herself into that situation and no one else to blame, the human condition is more complex than that. We can have two thoughts, that aren't necessarily in conflict anyway. We can still be kind, generous, and loving, even with someone whose own poor choices have caused her so much pain. It would be easy to just say, "Sucks to be you, shouldn't have messed with a married man in the first place." That would be easy, but it would be cruel and wrong. The fact that she broke the rules doesn't free us from that other rule, to love one another.
