Back to ten years ago, “girl crush” concept wasn’t really a big thing in Korea. When 2NE1 debuted, they built up a brand new image of female idols and shocked the whole Kpop industry. However, their unique clothes, edgy hairstyles and heavy makeup didn’t widely be accepted and loved by the majority in Korea. In fact, they were called “ugly unnies” since day one because of the strong hip-hop style that YG put on them. The background story of < ugly>: One day CL asked their producer Teddy why people always judged and humiliated others if someone didn’t fit the mainstream. Why audiences could easily point at them and called them “ugly” just because they didn’t fit the “beauty standards”. And this is why the song be written and composed. So many groups nowadays debuted as “girl crush” style successfully; many fans are obsessed with them, and even Korean do. Those girl groups should really thanks to 2NE1, for these four ladies carried those harsh criticism, endured discrimination and made Kpop become more various. We should all appreciate their efforts and bravery, when they broke the barriers and expanded the Kpop industry.

2NE1 were called the “ugly group” in Korea from the moment they debuted in 2009, they were even called ugly by their own ex-CEO on their faces and in front of other people. That’s must be hard specially with Minzy being 15 and CL 17 years old by that time. Then 2 years later they kinda appropriate that releasing this song

And it took a toll on Minzy's mental health! Growing up having people constantly calling her ugly. She went into depression and had suicidal thoughts. All of this happened without anyone knowing. It wasn't until her interview with Billboard after she left 2NE1 did she open up about her struggles. Mind you, she was so young and has been in the industry since she was 11. She was merely 20 or 21 when they disbanded and she received so much hate for leaving the group. All of this happened before people found out about her struggles. And she's the type to keep everything to herself, not wanting to burden Bom, Dara and CL. Dara cried during Minzy's appearance on her talk show, Video Star, because after all these years working and living together, she never knew that Minzy was struggling inside. That interview really broke my heart. I just wanna hug all of them cos they've all been through a lot! :'(

@@smittycal 2NE1 didn't fit those "standards" when back then probably every member of every KR girl group was supposed to look cute, lovely, or even sexy, big round eyes, sweet smiles, mini skirts, high heels, like a pure angel or a hottie. But 2NE1 were very different, I might even say 2NE1 is ahead of time of kpop, not easy for people to accept. And when people don't accept, people start attacking. 2NE1 sing well, dance well, rap well, their stages are crazy, the only thing left to attack is their look for being different from those who are cute or sexy, so people call them ugly, even though we all know that's simply not true.

Minzy is a respected dancer in S. Korea. She now runs her own dance academy and recently established her own entertainment agency where she will not only be active as an artist but also as a producer and trainer for young, aspiring artists. You should check out her dance videos. She is especially great at freestyles and hiphop.

For their solo project... Dara, the girl with half shaved hair, was the first who have solo single in 2NE1, she released a song called KISS. Then followed with Park Bom, the long hair girl next to CL, with YOU AND I. and DON'T CRY. Not long after. Minzy (the short hair one) and CL came out as Duo, released PLEASE DON'T GO. Then CL finally have the opportunity to have her solo debut with "THE BADDEST FEMALE". Then the riddiculous "scandal" happened, force them to disbanded. After the disbandment: CL: HELLO BITCHES, LIFTED, And lots of collaboration with various american singers n rappers, and on december 2019 after she left YG ent. she released EP, In The Name Of Love Dara: focus on TV show as host (she still wants to sing again) Bom: SPRING, 4:44, WANNA GO BACK Minzy: NINANO, SUPERWOMAN, LOVELY

This is my favorite song from 2NE1. Not the usual empowering message telling "you are beautiful" type of song. but it shows the honest truth and raw feeling how hard people really deal with insecurities..

I'm sure they felt ugly at that time because of the society's standard in 2009 when 2NE1 debuted they were called "UGLY GROUP" because at that time their beauty was not the standard beauty by a lot of KNetz. But, I like how 2NE1 sang this song with confidently and bluntly. This song was a big shocked to Koreans the sound was/is different and the message is heavy. They became the QUEEN OF KPOP though, at the end they won and established their image and legacy so strong. Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank you for the reactions! I enjoyed it and your comments.

I recommend 2NE1 - I Don’t Care Rock Ver. To see their live performance!! They are monsters live!!! For 2NE1 its a must to watch their live performances! Also as a bonus you will get to see them with the Band Six in this performance as well! So 2 in 1 xD!

CL, you already know about. Park Bom has a solo career! So does Minzy! Dara was more into acting (because of her company, she wanted to do music). 2NE1 kinda shattered in 2014 because of a pretty idiotic “drug scandal” involving Bom. She used to live in the US and got prescribed aderall. Returning to Korea for her career, she got her medication sent to her except that aderall is illegal in Korea. Koreans more or less turned their back on her and the group remained on hiatus. In 2015 they gave what we didn’t know what would be the last performance of them together at MAMA. After this, Minzy left the company, and the last three put one last song out called Goodbye, with lyrics meant for Minzy. Then Bom left the company and remained on the low. CL recently (last year I think?) left because the company refused to put out her album even after she asked.

I think Dara is fine with her career or she'd also leave YG. She originally wanted to be an actress in Korea but YG signed her as a singer. She does things in the Philippines still, has her own show, etc. For some reason, YG seems to have treated her the best.

One of the reasons they were called ugly was because kpop wasn't into in hiphop like nowadays.. their Label was a hiphop label so their music and outfits had that feels they weren't cute /girly so for Korean sensibility they were rude🤦‍♀️ also their CEO introduced them as ugly group but with talent😤...... during their active years as a group they became fashion icons but haters kept trying to bringing them down through their weight cuz they weren't skinny like other females idols actually back then was a kind of trend for idols don't eat at all but 2NE1 members they love eating their label mostly had an eye on Bom cuz she goes crazy for food like bread, pastry and corns(a lot😅) they never had that crazy restriction about food..... It's sad that you didn't react to the whole video cuz is really dope but I really appreciate that you checked it out for this song lyrics.... If you are interested to react to their others songs with lyrics there's 2NE1 mvs with eng subtitles made by some fans under those fans channels.... Btw 2NE1 has only one song with subtitles under their channel(goodbye) but this song is their last and the most heartbreaking song even if this is a beautiful song most of their fans don't watch it so often cuz it kills us every time😢.....please next song CLAP YOUR HANDS has hiphop feels 👌 Thanks in advance
