Mid-70s Canadian teen boy here. BTO and Rush were the TWO major bands of the day. Rush was intellectual and progressive. BTO was working-class rock gods. Dive deeper and BTO won't disappoint.

I was at school and we crossed the Ambassador Bridge to Detroit because BTO was in town. They were a a very big deal . It was like they were set up for arena rock. You had to see the entire wall was amps and speakers. At the time that much volume was unheard of. It was so loud it hurt.. but we loved it. You felt the thump as much as heard it. And this song in particular was written to be loud and hard. Everything was 50% more than anything that preceded it. It was visceral. The hysteria and the loud was AC/DC before arena rock became a thing. This was ground breaking. Fred Turner's voice was loud in its own right but through those amps and those speakers it was so loud you couldn't hear yourself think. In its own way the best concert..ever.

I was going to our nearest big city to shop and this song came on the radio. I noticed that when a nice vehicle would roll past us, the beat in this song made it look more badass like the wheels rolling in perfect time. Then I noticed, big trucks, even ugly cars looked cooler. So definitely a good song for "rolling down the highway."

Thanks for this. As a kid growing up in Canada, we grew up with BTO. Been awhile, brings back some great memories. Here's another Road classic you may want to have a listen to from that time also. Remember the Dutch band Golden Earing?. They formed a year before the Rolling Stones. Their end finally came in 2021 as their founding band member was diagnosed with ALS. The song was "Radar Love". Check it out.

Per Wikipedia Turner and Randy Bachman had originally been contracted by Ford to write a song for the automotive company's commercials, but Ford never picked up any of their compositions. Robbie Bachman later helped develop one of Turner's ideas into a Top 20 hit. "Roll on Down the Highway" peaked at No. 14 on the US Billboard Hot 100 on March 1, 1975. It reached No. 8 on the Cash Box Top 100 singles, and No. 4 on the Canadian RPM chart, and gave the band their second - and final - hit in the United Kingdom, reaching No. 22 in the UK Singles Chart.

If you want to hear their true scope, listen next to Blue Collar. Their masterpiece, and who would have thought those rockers could make some great jazz? Far more complex musically and lyrically than their other songs. Looking Out For #1 is another wonderful deviation from their typical sound, but I'd say Blue Collar first.
