"A joke in the way we rust, and breath again" is genius. Our blood has iron and salt, the act of breathing ages and kills us. We are rusting with all the breaths we take.

Whoa, whoa, whoa! Wait a second here. I came here because Ben Howard is one of my favorite musicians, particularly writers in music. I couldn't wait to see how impressed the reviewer was of him However I left being JUST as impressed by the reviewer as I was of Ben. Full of knowledge and extremely articulate and charismatic. Great explanations of everything. The first time I can ever recall being impressed by a reviewer and feeling like I was in safe hands with their opinions. Great job, Mr. Boyd!
@JasonHebert10 ай бұрын
Also, some more great songs by Ben: Depth over Distance, Black Flies, Keep Your Head Up and Conrad. Conrad especially for this reviewer since I'd imagine he's either already knowledgeable about the original tale of Conrad or will become so before reviewing the song

Ben Howard is such an unique vibe…one of my absolute favorite artists…his music commands you to listen…every time I hear a song of his playing somewhere it stops me in my tracks…to me his music is beautifully painful even though it’s not coming from a dark place…if that makes any sense? 😂
@rcastro884 ай бұрын
Totally. The first time I heard him, he was opening for Mumford and sons back in like '13/'14. We walked in halfway through his performance and it stopped me in my tracks. I couldn't move, all I could do was listen to him perform Black Flies. Totally mesmerized. Been a huge fan ever since 🖤

A lesser known song of his that is one of my favorites is Follaton Wood. He’s been my favorite artists for most of my adult life. Old Pine is another favorite of mine and The Wolves, Only Love is of course great, but easily one of his most well known, sorry geeking out coming across this video as I don’t see much of Ben anywhere. First time driving myself out of state was to see him play in Chicago.

Coke isn't or shouldn't used in the smelting of gold. He's saying that Midas touch was tainted and cursed because everything he touched turned to gold including his food and water which led to his death. He's saying that there's a cost to wealth and riches. A joke in the way that we rust could refer to exactly this, the gold is impure, as are we and rusts as a result. All the indulgences and greed (gold) will eventually rust and ruin us. And when we are at the bottom, when we have nothing, we realise what's important and we pick ourselves up and breath again

i would definitely focus on Ben Howard's approach to expression as a gesture. He doesn't like looking for "bespoke meaning" in his songs. He truly points his "meaning" as gesture. There's a couple interviews where he examines this more clearly

If there is coke in midas touch it isn't gold. An illusion made of cheap iron. The joke in the way that we rust. Is referring to the cruel sense of time passing. Also iron in our blood ages us. And breathe again. Go again. After what you had rusts away.

Man, this is way away from this type of music (kinda, I been listening to been Howard since Hershel was crying in a scene on the walking dead while this song played) but Anthrax- Blood Eagle Wings+ or- the video is worth a look. It came out, literally, the day I decided to sober up and focus on the things I'm capable of rather than focus on the things I let hold me back. Great channel by the way, I love the intelligence and understanding you apply to every genre you encounter.
