Absolutely the godfathers of metal. When I was 12 or 13 my brother got sick of hearing me blast the Beach Boys record and grabbed it and broke my record on his knee. He told me if I wanted to be one of the cool kids I'd have to start listening to rock n' roll. He slapped the PARANOID album into my hands and I've been hooked on Metal ever since. True story...

I had to grin when I saw the word "mild" applied to this song, but I understand what you mean. I remember some controversy about the lyrics with some feeling that it somehow was offensive to people with mental illness- of course lots of older folks (then) were pretty offended by Black Sabbath on principle.

Songs were shorter back in the day because the record companies were trying to keep them within a certain length for radio. You also had physical considerations like fitting the song on a 45RPM single for juke boxes, and fitting entire albums on 33 1/3 RPM vinyl. You should have seen how much Queen had to fight to make Bohemian Rhapsody, and that was in 1975.

My dad is a major Hawkwind fanatic, and used to make us endure hoooouuurrs of concert videos back in the 80s/90s when we had 1 TV/VHS player and what mum or dad wanted to watch is what was on. So when my mum would go out to bingo on a Saturday night, we’d have to either watch Hawkwind or go to our rooms🤣 My mum was not keen on it at all, and would only allow Paranoid and Silver Machine to ever be played in her presence, so I can’t hear one of those without thinking of the other. Also, our local pub had a jukebox that had both of those tracks on it. While we were would choose something cheesy like The Bartman for our pick, my dad would endlessly play Paranoid and Silver Machine.

All of that background is called psychedelia. This was 1970, the era of psychedelic music art and fashion. And what you're witnessing with Black Sabbath is literally the birth of metal rock. These guys were the pioneers. Can't believe you haven't heard this. The song is iconic in the states. Another iconic song is an Ozzy Osbourne solo song... "Crazy Train". Check it out! 👍👍

This is Black Sabbath at their most basic. They expanded musically from about 1973- 1976, then they sort of self imploded due to drugs. I like this song a lot but it's to Black Sabbath what I Want To Hold Your hand is to The Beatles. Raw and catchy.

So glad you have done this one as this song was the song which first got me into heavy metal! It was released in 1970 but it was in the early 80s when I heard it for the first time. I was a teenager and after hearing it on an old Black Sabbath Greatest Hits album while at a mates house I was hooked. The song Black Sabbath from their self titled debut album is also amazing. Also NIB, Sabbath bloody Sabbath and Fairies wear boots. The original Changes is also good - I mean the original Black Sabbath song not the remake Ozzy did with with his daughter. Have you heard any Motorhead? Lemmy was a lyrical genius his song lyrics were poetry. Surely you've heard Ace of Spades by Motorhead, if not thats a good place to start. Brotherhood of Man God was never on your side One more fucking time I dont believe a word I aint no nice guy (duet with Ozzy) Love me forever No voices in the sky Dont let daddy kiss me 1916 These are all my particular favourites. Also take a look at Judas Priest who have been round since the early 70s - Rob Halford has an amazing vocal range. IMO the bsst albums are British Steel, Screaming for Vengence & Painkiller (which was the album I first became aware of them) I also adore their concept album Nostradamus which isssss REALLY different. But they are still going and very recently releassd a new album.

I still have my ticket for seeing Black Sabbath for the first time on 24 January 1972 at Birmingham Town Hall. I just came across it again the other day when sorting out some drawers. If bands produced songs hoping to get them in the singles charts, they had to be no more than 3 minutes long to get radio play, and TV play on Top of the Pops. Led Zeppelin didn't care about getting into the singles charts which is why they didn't produce 'singles', never in the UK, though their record company, issued a few of their longer songs as singles in the USA. LZ relied on album sales and concert income.

This was released in 1970, it was still hard to get songs over 3 minutes long or so onto the mainstream rock radio stations, and radio airplay back then could make or break your album sales, since that was almost the only vehicle available to widely promote your music. In fact, Iron Man from this album was one of the first songs to successfully break that rule to any great extent.

I remember putting the 7 inch single on the turntable and watching the vertigo label spinning round until I felt sick and dizzy. Try "Black Sabbath" by Black Sabbath. It got them banned from the BBC because it was deemed to be satanic. However, one DJ Alan Freeman alias "Fluff" defied the BBC and still played their stuff. They wrote a surprisingly soft and beautiful instrumental piece called "Fluff" in recognition of his loyalty. Keep it up lad.

Songs were shorter so radio stations could get more airplay per hour. Longer songs tended to be taboo back then until Prog Rock came along and started kicking out 20 minute long epics that barely made the radio except for special radio programs like The King Biscuit Flower Hour that focused a whole show on one band and many of their hidden gems.
