@metalmark12142 жыл бұрын
Bob Seger almost took that line out because he thought it wasn't grammatically correct, Bob Seger explains - "The only thing that bothered me about that phrase was the grammar. It sounded grammatically funny to me. I kept asking myself, 'Is that correct grammar?' I liked the line, and everybody I played it for - like Glenn and Don (Henley) - were saying, 'That's the best line in the song,' but I couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't right. But I slowly came around."

I'm 65 yo and knew this song head to toe. I've always ended running against the wind, beat breast cancer twice, once in my 30's and again 4 years later, but by God's Grace and His sense of humor, I'm here, still running against the Wind. I, too, find myself alone. My husband quit touching me in 2004, which left me with much larger emotional scars than anything the CA did to my body. So I lost everything and am so messed up from that portion of my strongest run against the Wind, along with people I thought were my friends.... I just exist now, lonely, tired, and the wind in my hair, awaiting the day I can run with the wind. Looking back is an emotional train wreck, so I put it all in God's Hands. ❤❤
@jackdaniel12756 ай бұрын
Reading what you're going through was tough to read. I cannot imagine how I'd feel if my wife quit touching me. You saying that has left with you much larger emotional scars than cancer speaks volumes! I lost my mom and sister to cancer so I know how much scars cancer leaves a person emotionally. You mentioned you put it all in God's hands and that's the best place to put it. I know God has a plan for each and every one of us. I think the plan he laid out for me, (My life to this point) though rough, full of lies and deceit ended up turning my life around and getting back to him. My mom died of Cancer when I was 15 years old. Shortly after I got baptized and gave my life to our Lord. That lasted only a few years and I fell into living for the world. Fast forward to 2022 at 43 years old, God blessed me with a child and through the love of my child and my wonderful wife, I found the Lord again. I think that was the plan he had for me so that when I leave this Earth, when and however that may be, I'll see my mom and sister again in Heaven because they both had the Lord in their lives and now I do. Lean on the Lord and whether your plan works out on Earth or your plan is for Heaven, know HE has one for you and he loves you so very much. Father, please hear this woman's voice and help her thorough this very difficult time in her life as you did when she went through cancer twice. Lord you put your healing hands on her for her physical health and now Lord she needs your hands on her for this emotional stress she is facing now. Lord help her to stay strong in her faith to you so that one day, she may join you in Heaven where she will be a perfect being with no pain and suffering and loved by the only one that truly matters and that's you. Thank you Father for all you do. Amen

Overall, the meaning of this song is about getting older. It’s about pushing on in life and maturing through love, exploration, heartbreak, and betrayal. The title and the repeated phrase “against the wind,” in particular, signal the passing of time. The phrase itself was something that Seger picked up from his days of running track and cross country in high school when he would literally “run against the wind.” Each mile running against the wind, each mile fighting an external force, took Seger farther and farther in his journey. “Against The Wind” isn’t just a song about getting older. It’s about learning to realize what is important in your life, especially when it comes to the people in your life. In a 1980 interview with Rolling Stone, Seger explained how he came to this realization thanks to his then-girlfriend Janey Dinsdale “Jan[ey] says to me all the time, ‘You allow more people to walk on you than anybody I’ve ever known.’ And I always say it’s human nature that people are gonna love you sometimes and they’re gonna use you sometimes,” Seger said. “Knowing the difference between when people are using you and when people truly care about you, that’s what ‘Against the Wind’ is all about. The people in that song have weathered the storm, and it’s made them much better that they’ve been able to do it and maintain whatever relationship. To get through is a real victory.

The Eagles did not sing background vocals on this song, only Glenn Frey who sang the background vocals with Bob Seger. The album was produced by Bill Szymczyk who produced The Eagles. Another interesting fact about the song is that there was only supposed to be a piano solo in the middle. Glenn Frey was the one who suggested that the guitarist play with the pianist. That fact is in the liner notes for the song on his Greatest Hits Album.

Out of the many "I was young, now I'm old. Young was better" Bob Seger songs, I like this one the best, because it makes additional observations, like how your "friends" often aren't, how one's life is defined by whatever is due by whatever time, and how life is mostly just a long, though increasingly shorter, struggle. A glass-is-half-empty kind of song, but it is what it is.
