So this song was written because of the police brutality that lead to the 1992 LA Riots. It was a CRAZY time to be young. I was 16-17 in 1992. So I saw Body Count at a show with Exodus, Propane and Testament in Northern California. It was an insane show. I'll leave it at that lol. After the show I remember leaving and like 50 cops were there thinking this show would have incited a riot. But it was quite the opposite. Nothing happened and the show went off with out a hitch. I very briefly met Ice T and Ernie C(guitar player) . They were both super cool people. Yeah man the early 90s were ROUGH

Police brutality was bad in southern California during those times. Especially towards minorities and misfits too (punks, skaters, etc) . '80s/'90s. Then the Rodney King thing happened then you had wild riots across southern California. So you had a reaction from many bands from California back then. Songs about it from all different genes especially hip hop and, punk rock, rock music.: Rage Against the Machine, Sublime, Dr Dre/Snoop Dogg, Cypress Hill, The Offspring, Downset, Suicidal Tendencies, MC Eiht (Comptons Most Wanted), Ice Cube/NWA, 2Pac, Rancid, Slayer with Ice T, Machine Head, Po.rno for Pyros, etc. Folks were fed up. lol

Saw Ice when this came out at a small club in Philly. He did his rap set first, took a short break, then did a set with his band Body Count. Dude, there were cops everywhere outside, on every corner, and driving by, for blocks around just waiting for some shit to go down. And literally nothing at all happened. It done my heart good knowing the cops were all let down and disappointed! 🤣

"Cop Killer" played a role in shaping the conversation around artistic expression, censorship, and social responsibility within the recording industry. The song's graphic content and perceived glorification of violence against police sparked a national controversy. This led to increased scrutiny and pressure on record labels to self-censor artists, particularly those in controversial genres like rap. This self-censorship, while not explicitly stated, could manifest as artists avoiding certain topics or toning down their language to avoid potential controversy. The controversy reignited the debate on free speech and the role of artistic expression, and the incident became a case study in the ongoing tension between artistic expression and social responsibility. While Ice-T, defended the song as a commentary on social issues, critics, including then-Vice President Dan Quayle, condemned it as inciting violence. The "Cop Killer" controversy highlighted the power of public pressure and the potential for artists to face significant backlash for their work. This, alongside other factors like the rise of parental advisory labels and concerns about violent content, contributed to a more cautious approach by some artists and labels, especially regarding potentially controversial themes.

This is Body Count, Ice T's rock band he started in 1990 while he was still pumping out wicked rap. Body Count are still around after 33 years. I would love you to hear Ice-T solo, he was one of the pioneers of gangster rap. "Lethal Weapon", "Midnight", "Freedom of Speech", "6 in the Morning", "I'm Your Pusher" - too many to list. Ice-T showed you what living in South Central LA in the 80's/90's was like, the repression and poverty, the violence and comradeship. He also promoted education and intelligence as well as a positive future. Check him out.

Copkiller was the encore. Ice T said they were told backstage that they were NOT ALLOWED to perform this song and they had to sign a contract saying they wouldn't. Ice T said, F'em I'm Fn ICE T, F that S^^^ and they went right into the song. Cops all over the stadium I remember were freaking out. Great show, they actually blew me away as to how good they were live in that big stadium.

Yeah this is my kind of music. When the first album came out it was a big sucsess in germany. Cop killer has not the same social meaning here because at this time the police here act different as in america. But it was a big hit in the rock clubs and everyone goes wild on the dancefloor. From the start bodycount was total acceptet in the rock scene because ice-t had a huge credebility and reputation here. See them live back in the days here in germany and the performance was so intense. This shit has rocked the house

He was the first music artist that I knew of, to try and be silenced by the censorship board. So I knew he must have something important to say. For something more hip hop from Ice-T, go for "6 In The Morning", "I'm Your Pusher", "Lethal Weapon", "O.G. Original Gangsta" or his collab with Ice Cube, "Trespass". Saw them on a Lollapalooza tour (1991, back when it was a mobile festival and not a Chicago festival). He played half a set of Ice-T tracks and half a set of new Body Count songs. You need to listen to his track "Colors". Certified Rap Classic. And a cop who doesn't do bad things but stands aside while others do them is still a bad cop. So anyone not actively working Internal Affairs or ratting on their partner is, statistically, a bad cop.

Loved this album. During a time where most rappers were collaborating with rock bands (RunDMC/Aerosmith, PE/Anthrax, etc.), Ice T took it a step further and started his own punk band. Title is a little misleading - he wasn't a featured artist. He was the lead singer of the band. This album scared mainstream media and the powers that be so bad, they tried to take away his 1st amendment rights by having it banned. Fortunately, the judge proceeding over the trial understood the Bill of Rights and dismissed the whole thing.

Fun(ish) fact...my brother and i got the last 2 copies of the album with this song on it before record stores were forced to replace them with the version without the song. (I know we had the last 2 because we called and/or went to EVERY store in the New Orleans area (where we dwell) .... took days...but we found a small store woth TWO copies left. Good times. (Good reaction dude)... check out his rap album O.G. esp. The song MIDNIGHT....and get ready for a story told so well you'll be able to picture every syllable. Oh...and yes...Bleep most of the police.

I managed to get a copy of the Body Count CD with this on it back in the day when it was first released before it got pulled and they removed this track, think its a German import and cost a lot back then for a CD, but worth it!! Great album and this track was very controversial and affectively banned at the time. Body Count could have been some rap metal thing but Ice-T did it right and came hard with hardcore crossover vibe with take no prisoner lyrics. Ice MuthaF***in' T

Old president Bush didn't like this song and made them take all the albums out of stores. So they made an (American) version of the album with no Cop Killer. I live in Europe and found the album for 5 Gulden at a secondhand shop, WITH the song Cop Killer. :)

I always respected Ice-T for this side of his career. I thought it was cool that he stepped outside of hip hop to do this. But, I also didn't think they were very good. In fact I thought they sucked. But I did like the effort. It was a super cool time for music. Artists were crossing over and playing with everyone.
