As far as Zack's political ideology, he's about as extreme as it gets. He's basically Huey from The Boondocks. A few months ago Rage was inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame and Zack wasn't there because he was busy protesting the war in Gaza. He's really about it.
@citizenbrain8065

As an anarcho-communist myself, I don't find the views extreme at all. I find the current status quo extreme and unsustainable. Power and profit over people, exploitation of workers and indigenous communities in the search of a sort of capitalist manifest destiny, corporations running governments, colonialism still alive today, the poisoning of our planet and prisons making money by keeping their jails full with a 21st century version of chattel slavery. It's untenable and you can see it crumbling before your eyes right now. It takes time but capitalism is in itself unsustainable. That's extreme to me but hey, we all have our own perceptions of the world.

"Would Zack be for Socialism" Rage literally supported Shining Path, a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary group, and the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN), a revolutionary militant Libertarian Socialist indigenous movement in Mexico. Tom Morello regularly wore Communist symbols. You can see the influence of radical far-left militancy in many of their music videos, especially Bulls on Parade, but the lyrics are pretty explicit about the need to seize the means of production.

@@ANunes06maybe that used to be true. While still a minority I’ve seen the growth of radical anti-capitalists over the last decade. The increase in anarchists, ML’s, socialists, even fcking Mao 3rd worldists. A combo of worsening economic conditions, access to info & authoritarian crackdowns, ppl have been waking up to the contradictions inherent in our imperialist capitalist structure. Considering how incredibly propagandized we are, how separated we are by neo liberal individualism, it’s actually crazy. And 100% it’s bc everything has gone to far. For years the declining middle class was kept afloat by debt, but there’s a point when you can’t take on anymore debt, wages don’t keep up while prices for necessities rise. As rights gets stripped & the party who says they stand for those rights are feckless, powerless p•ssies who will say they hear us & see us, but won’t do sht for us. One party being rabid sociopaths & the other the liberal elites, both thinking we’re fcking peasants to feed to the corporate profit machine until we drop dead. But srsly there used to be few truly radicalized leftists but that’s changing. I feel like weve reached a tipping point. Ofc we could just as easily descend into facism but there’s an actual chance for a real revolution of a multicultural proletariat. At least I have a sliver of hope, but most of the time I think we’ll just burn.

Your Rage reactions are the best thing on KZbin! The guitar part your talking about at 2:04 is actually Tim playing the bass run through a distortion pedal and a wah-wah pedal to create that "shake your speaker baffles" sound. And Tom's solo... he plays that sh%t LIVE! There's no over dubbing of tracks in their music (for the most part) And I'll also sign the "Down Rodeo" petition for next Rage song

This whole band is talking the talk and then walking that walk, but Zack is a Radical Leftist who wants Revolution. He’s especially inspired by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) that focuses on land reform/return, anti-colonialism, anti-neoliberalism, libertarian socialism. The complete destruction of capitalism is what Zack wants and is trying to contribute to. I really recommend checking out 1) the RATM radical reading list, and B) Interviews with Zack. He’s not an armchair politico, he’s thought very deeply and learned a lot about rev left ideology and how it applies to the modern world. As to your question at the end of the video about payment, RATM songs are credited to being written by Rage Against the Machine meaning that all 4 members are considered equal creators of the music, since “Labour is entitled to all it creates” is one of the band’s messages.

Zack is a legend in multiple genres, he was a really solid singer in the hardcore band Inside Out, then in RATM he was SIMULTANEOUSLY one of the best mainstream rappers and rock frontmen of the 90's. Now he periodically collabs with really legit hip-hop artists (like RTJ). Even did some traditional Mexican music. And with all that success and fame he stays incredibly humble and private. You don't hear from him unless it's on a track. So good luck siting down with him, but hey, sometimes dreams come true!

Hey Roberto, I love this RATM reacts. Here's a bit of Zach's past history to give context on some of the lyrics and his style: "His father was a muralist and a member of Los Four, the first Chicano art collective to be exhibited at a museum. De la Rocha's great grandfather, Jose Isaac de la Rocha Acosta, was a Mexican revolutionary who fought in the Mexican Revolution. His grandfather Isaac de la Rocha, was an agricultural laborer in the U.S. De La Rocha would later see the hardships his grandfather endured reflected in the struggles of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. De la Rocha's parents divorced when he was six, and he moved from East Los Angeles to Irvine with his mother, who attended the University of California, Irvine and earned a PhD in anthropology. De la Rocha later described Irvine as "one of the most racist cities imaginable" and said that "if you were a Mexican in Irvine, you were there because you had a broom or a hammer in your hand."

Zach is saying what we all feel. Not even just as a black person, a human being. He's a poet for justice. I know he'd hate me but I love him .

9:10 you can absolutely do all of these sounds at once using a delay pedal for your instrument! It's essentially an echo that you can control the exact repetition rate and number of repetitions of, and you just turn it on by pressing a button with your foot- same pedal he used for the echo in the Like A Stone solo.

As far as what a band member makes, I believe the ones credited for the songs make the most from royalties. If the band chooses to split the signing contract evenly that is up to them. And most bands make money from touring (ticket sales). So again, what they decide to do with the money is up to them.

RATM came out with 3 albums of original music, with this song being on their last album which dropped in ‘99 (I was in high school) and this whole album is 🔥Their 4th (and last) album is all cover songs, and they cover a few hip hop artists, so it’s cool to hear Zack rapping to hip hop songs on that album.

There's an updated version of PE's Burn, Hollywood Burn with Zack, Chuck D & The Roots, along with tracks he's done with Run the Jewels, if you want to hear him on more traditional sounding hip-hop.

Yes, all those sounds are made at once. Tom, and the extension of his body that is his guitar, makes those noises at one time. It’s glorious perfection!

Zach is definitely the star of RATM, Tom revolutionized guitar in a big way, but that shit that’s making your head bop is drums and bass 100%! Also, check out Zach on Run the Jewels track “JU$T”… he’s on a few of their tracks, but his verse on that one is fire, and he does the chorus.

I don't expect a reply here since I doubt you want to get too into politics, but saying you are "pro-capitalism" is mostly meaningless without defining what you mean. I say this because there is so much FUD from a variety of sources that will use words like capitalism, socialism, communism, liberal, conservative, Neo-conservative, progressive, etc, but they all have VERY DIFFERENT meanings (if they even really have much of a meaning at all besides scare tactics). Some people will think of capitalism as meaning "no or little regulation" but that isn't at all what that means. The level of regulation is pretty much an entirely different topic. Some may say they support "democratic capitalism" which is basically where the regulations are agreed upon in a democratic manner, which would require the elimination of money corrupting influences but as soon as you phrase it as such it gets labeled as socialism by others. All the labels get so muddied (intentionally so by people trying to influence your behavior) that they are mostly worthless. The only political discussions that matter imo are ones that focus on specific policy. As soon as you start to abstract ideas to make them easier to understand you also make them easier to misunderstand.

You need to hear Zach on track he did with Run The Jewels. It’s more traditional rap, but he is still Zach. From a dude who has listened to him since the early nineties in middle and high school!
