There are certain events that happen in the course of life where you know where you were when you heard certain news. JFK, 9/11 etc. I was just a 23-year-old kid driving to work and I heard the news about Terry on my car radio. I was literally in shock for most of the day. Very sad indeed. This is an abridged version of the song released on their 1969 debut double-LP as the Chicago Transit Authority. The percussion outro with cowbell, blocks, and vocal trills lasts for a few minutes. You can't go wrong with the Terry Kath era of Chicago, 1967-1977. Sadly, founding guitarist Terry Kath died 46 years ago on January 23, 1978, 8 days short of what would have been his 32nd birthday. "Poem 58" on that debut album is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Cue that one up and prepare to be blown away by that raw talent!

@johnboehmer668311 ай бұрын
The percussion lS really good, but 100% does not fit with the rest of the song (of course, just my opinion). The feel of this song, the incredibly bright optimism and feel-good vibe perfectly done, makes it one of the best ever. But that vibe is diminished by then putting the focus exclusively on a long percussion jag. Without it the song is a 10, with it an 8. They did the same thing with, "Hard to Say I'm Sorry", completely changing the feel of the song with that up-tempo swing at the end, it doesn't work (for me anyhow).

This song was written by the great Robert Lamm, who also sang the lead vocals here. Chicago (aka Chicago Transit Authority) consisted of : Robert Lamm : Vocals, Keyboards Terry Kath (R.I.P.) : Guitar, vocals Peter Cetera : Bass, vocals Danny Seraphine : Drums Walter Parazaider : Saxophones Lee Loughnane : Trumpet James Pankow : Trombone THIS is what I consider the *real* Chicago/ CTA. The loss of Terry Kath was the first major blow, a a devastating one. For the next few years, they did still manage to put out some pretty good stuff still but it just wasn’t the same. But when Corporate Music pushed for schlocky gooey love songs with ONLY Peter Cetera on lead vocals in the 80s, and keeping those amazing horn players nearly muted… they lost me and almost all their devoted fanbase. Cetera had a great tenor voice, but the songs themselves had *none* of what made Chicago stand out in the first damn place. Sad to say, but once Cetera spun off into his solo career and the attention of Corporate Music strayed elsewhere… it took a few years to recoup and reboot, bring in a few different musicians, etc. BUT Chicago finally started recording again. To far less attention and acclaim, but I believe to the betterment of the remaining original members who’s been unwisely and unjustly pushed to the shadows.

I always like the horns in Chicago, but this one in particular. In high school, my twin brother played sax, two friends played trumpet and I played trombone. I can imagine us playing along with this song every time I hear it. An the fade out percussion shared by everyone in the band...until you killed it before it ended.
@xiurong88811 ай бұрын
Drummer Danny Seraphine is amazing. Back then, Danny and Bobby Colomby from BS&T were my favorite drummers. Very different styles, but both great. James Pankow on trombone is also an incredible musician. Love the addition of Latin percussion at the end, especially the agogo bells.
