This is a hacked to pieces version of the song. It leaves out a verse and the guitar solo during the outro. Check out their version from Wembley Stadium in 1985, or from Live Aid. He's singing about a band playing in a club in front of very few people. It's based on a true story of his experience.

Agreed, Alchemy, one of the greatest tours ever, and one of the greatest recordings. His purity of string striking, split string technique is phenomenal. I could (and do!) listen to this musical purity every week. Telegraph Road, Once Upon a Time In The West, and particularly Brothers In Arms get me every time.

Agreed that this is the best live version I have seen of this song. Also as some have suggested, Terry Williams' drum arrangement for this live performance brings up the energy in the song incredibly and rivals Mark Knopfler's playing as being the most memorable part of the performance.

Knopfler has said that the song is about stopping into a bar in London and seeing a pretty bad band playing to a virtually empty bar but seeing that the guys were into it despite their lack of talent and some stuff being said in the crowd. Knopfler said the singer closed the show by saying, "Thank you. We're the Sultans of Swing."

Mark Knopfler has said in many, many interviews that the band in question was pretty bad. In one interview with Brian Johnson, Knopfler said they weren't the sultans of anything, let alone swing. (That's the gist - it's not a direct quote.) The main reason he remembered that band so well was they didn't think they were bad at all. They thought they were great. He said he had to admire their swagger, basically because that's all they had - and that made it all the more comical to him.

It strange that he suggests that they were not good now when, if you listen to the words, he's written them a great review: "A band is blowing Dixie, double four time, You feel alright when you hear the music ring." "Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound." "You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing," "He can play the honky-tonk like anything, Saving it up for Friday night." That's a good review, it makes me wish I'd caught the band, and Mark was impressed and happy to have caught the gig at the time. The sadness is they're playing their hearts out and there's hardly anyone listening. The fate of some very skilled jazz bands in pubs in south East London in the late 1970s when this song is set.

Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Sultans Of Swing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Money For Nothing", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.

What really elevates their music, for my money, is Mark Knopfler's tasty guitar licks. His playing evinces a remarkable mix of bravura technique, incredible precision, and a very musical restraint - his guitar talks; he's not just trying to squeeze in as many notes as possible.

One of the things that I also enjoyed about Mark Knoflers song writing and performances is that he is a "Story Teller" and many of his songs reflect that = This song is based on him watching a weekend band called "The Sultans of Swing" one evening in London = His song "Money for Nothing" (The MTV Song) is based on him being in the Appliance Dept in a Large Department Store in New York and listening to complaining of the dept manager to his sales people while MTV was on a bank of televisions sets, Sting actually sings the backround vocals on the original recording and KZbin has a video of Knofler & Sting performing the song live at the Royal Albert Hall with Eric Clapton & Phil Collins on the drums = Great performance

The band called themselves Dire Straits at the time they were playing in the London pub scene and hoping to make it big. The lyrics are about those times when they could see other bands, with talented guys, playing previous generation music not to be popular but for the pleasure of it. Mark Knopfler's guitar sounds in this song are a collection of guitar styles of Mississipi's R&B (Dixie) of the 1950's.

This song is basically about a band that is playing in a pub in London. It's sort of introducing the band and their music to a hypothetical observer, a newcomer to the London music scene. The title, presumably, is the name of their band... "Sultan" being a title, and "swing" being the music genre they play.

Right, the song is about a London band that played Dixieland-type swing, "The Sultans of Swing". Mark Knoffler, the guitar player and lead singer, wrote the song, about his visit to that London club and the experience of hearing them play. Everyone chatting here is right; the original Dire Straights version is longer, with a longer guitar solo. Dire Straights and this song became hugely popular in that time. Knoffler is considered one of the greatest pop guitar players of that time. Enjoyed hearing it with you guys!

The Alchemy Live version of the song is far superior to this one! This is cut short and they're holding a lot back

Another great reaction! Sucks that you watched this version. They cut off the best part of the song, his solo at the end. Travesty. Hope you get a chance to see the full version sometime. Love you guys :)

Phenomenal guitarist. This was their breakout song in the late 70’s. When I first heard it on the radio I thought it was Bob Dylan. Dire Straits became huge during the MTV years. Mark Knopfler later played on the Bob Dylan record Slow Train Coming. Check out the song Precious Angel.

Whoever uploaded this edited song, did the band and song a great disservice! The best and most memorable part of this song is the amazing guitar solo at the end.

Great song! Great group! This is a shortened version. On the longer version, there's a verse where he says "And the Sultans ...Yeah, the Sultans, ...they play Creole ...Creole!"

There's an awesome version of this that reactors rarely seem to do. It's a particular live version and the guitar solo goes on longer, and it is mind blowing.

Oh no, that was the version with the shortened guitar solo (at the end). You definitely have to listen to the whole version with the full guitar solo by Mark Knopfler. Absolutely sick guitar skills!
