I'm a freaking metal head and it all began with classical music. To appreciate classical music is to appreciate all music. Rock on my brother!

5:45 you asked about the drum part - as a percussionist, I can tell you that is one of the most infamous snare drum parts in all of "classical" music! The control it takes to play that one 2 bar pattern for the entire piece and to not slip up is outstanding.

One of the sexiest pieces ever written. The buildup, the climax, the release. Seriously I see a little parade with a band approaching from the distance. Keep going with the classical, Sceez! You are very musical yourself! Bach’s Toccata and Fugue is a classical fave and used in many horror movies of the past! It’s actually quite beautiful.

Without the classical... We have nothing. This particular piece is just fantastic! So this is what Patrick was talking about the other night!!! SWEET!!! Ya boy Smokey does love himself some classic symphony. Good to know 😉 Hat tip to Patrick 🎩 I grew up on Saturday morning cartoons in the 70's and never lost my love for the music.

Great reaction, Sceez. I just love how it starts softly (with clarinets and oboes), and then it just keeps building and building into something truly magnificent. Ravel composed this almost a century ago and it still hits HARD.

I've been reading a bunch lately and I always have classical on in the background. I need music, but don't want to be distracted by lyrics, classical music is a whole vibe, for sure. Helps heal the soul. The drummer (percussionist? timpani player?) always gets a wee round of applause at the end of live performances for this, because he does have to be so incredibly consistent or the whole thing would go to shit :)

Classical is an underserved reaction genre and it’s a shame. There are centuries of great music to explore and appreciate. Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Rachmaninov, just to name a few of the greats. Keep going down this road!

I love all kinds of music, jazz was my first love along with rock and roll. Especially in the mid to late sixties when rock and roll changed. However, several years back I became interested in classical music. When I want to relax and tune out the world there's two pieces I listen to this is one of them the other is Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, which is classical with some jazz thrown in. You should listen to it, i'm sure you will like.

Many folks like to comment on what they visualize in their minds based on the beat, the tempo, the choice of instruments, etc. Some folks see a long line of elephants trudging through the jungle, a royal Egyptian procession (or perhaps Incan) at one of their pyramids, or a long seductive dance by a troupe in a king's palace. It all depends on the mood you're in!

I have an eclectic taste in music (varying in different categories/genres, including opera), and I’ve enjoyed classical music since I was around 6 or 7. There’s just something about certain (quite a few) pieces, including some of my favorite ones, being the entire piece of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata (3rd Movement), Mozart’s Lacrimosa, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons; Summer In D Minor, Johan Pachelbel’s Canon In D (Pachelbel’s Canon), that just make me go ‘🥺😢’ whilst listening to them. In other words, the ones I mentioned make me get super emotional whenever I listen to them on Spotify.

The beginning instruments are a few different woodwinds. The nonstop snare drum plays an ostinato rhythm meaning unchanging throughout as background but on top rhythms are the other instruments playing that starts out as pianissimo and rising in a continuous crescendo to fortissimo possibile, which means increase volume until it's as loud as possible. Classical music listening builds patience. Playing increases brain neuronal networks for learning.

To my nutso high school teacher Miss Hedges who introduced me to this piece of music, thank you. I enjoy the music; she claimed the repetitious beat was created as a way to mind-control or brainwash people. LOL She was crazy. If you see this comment and want to try another classic, I'd suggest the 1812 Overture. It kicks ASS!!!

Amazing how many people today cannot recognize the standard instruments in a symphonic orchestra. When I was a child my education in this regard was through Peter and the Wolf by Prokofiev. That's a flute..

I sincerely hope you enjoy your experiences with classical music. My favorite period is the Romantic school. Less "mathematical" than the Classical (note the capital "C") and less "wild" than Modern. There are several live performances of "Bolero" on KZbin that would make this piece more interesting to a wider audience. If you liked the composition, may I suggest live presentations by Maestro Dudamel or Maestro Gergiev. The beauty of this piece is the orchestration (combination of instruments to make the tones). It's fun to get to know the "voices" of each instrument and combination of instruments. Rumor has it that a woman ran screaming "I don't understand this. I cannot stand this!" Maurice Ravel was in the audience and commented later, "That woman understood this music!" Conductor Dudamel's version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/maundGachLijnsk . Maestro Gergiev's version: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fXu5iHipqdqSoq8

It's nice - actually, it's great - that you're reacting to one of the most iconic of post-Romantic Era classical pieces. It's not so nice - actually, it's not so great - that you chose an audio-only production to do your reaction to. There are tons of very great films of supurb, world-class orchestras performing Bolero. Sure, so many of the instruments are unfamiliar to you, but had you chosen a visual production, at least you could have seen them make their sounds. One of the most important jobs of the conductor is to maintain the rhythm that the orchestra will then follow. That's how they maintain their steady pace: through the knowledge, experience, and sheer will of one man (or woman), the conductor.
