The singer is Boy George. He's British and I have no idea why he used America's Southern plantation era in his video. But it's a really catchy song.

Rome Life, If your looking for a song by Culture Club that might be a little easier to dance to I suggest "I'll Tumble For You" might be one that you could give a listen to. Pop music back in the 80s was such a mixed bag of sounds, rips, and ideas. Hope that you enjoy listening to more Culture Club. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Culture Club song Time ( Clock of the Heart ) is a good song. Also Church of the Poison Mind. Some of their earlier stuff had a good Afro-Caribbean beat influence. I think one of the reasons this song was so popular was because of the video, the visuals, costumes and bright colors. ( obviously the catchy beat too ) Do you Really Want to Hurt Me was probably their biggest hit.

Back in the 80s I preferred "do you...hurt me" over this, but for me this one aged better. I can listen to this anytime, but I have to be in an 80s-retro-memory mode to really get lost in "do you really..." these days. Still, love them both!!!

Tony Regime COTPM is great! But Helen Terry steals the vocals from George on that one. 😉 To hear his voice fully, “Do you really...’ is a better track for Rome to react to, IMO.

This song's pretty good. It was a radio hit, and all that. But more importantly, this was during the early days of MTV, when music videos were a big deal, and when gender fluidity, transgender people, etc., were still considered quite shocking. Boy George's look, at this time in history, was extremely shocking to many people. It was one of the little things that helped shape LGBT history.
