The song is based on Joel’s experience as a lounge performer in Los Angeles in the early 1970s. He performed as such for about six months between 1972 and 1973 at the now-defunct Executive Room bar in the Wilshire district. He’d move to California from his native New York to avoid the record company he’d signed a contract with after the poor performance of his album, Cold Spring Harbor. Joel lived in L.A. for about three years working under the name “Bill Martin” since he couldn’t use his own name, due to contract issues. And all of the people highlighted in the song are based on Joel’s real-life encounters. John at the bar was an actual bartender who worked during Joel’s shifts. Paul the real estate novelist is a real estate agent who was also named Paul, and each night he sat at the bar and worked on what might become the next great American novel. The waitress who practiced politics was Joel’s first wife, Elizabeth Weber, whom he moved to L.A. with in 1972. She also worked at The Executive Room while Joel performed.

I’m older but I had the same experience. I was into nothing but hip hop and I heard this song and I knew immediately I had to hear more Beatles. I’m so glad I went down that path. They’re one of my favorites now.

I'm a white woman who loves ALL kinds of music from ALL eras, especially blues, jazz, funk & rock. I personally do not consider Chris Stapleton country. He, to me, is the definition of pure blues & soul! Like BB King, Barry White & Etta James meshed into a country looking, extraordinarily talented, white man 😁❤️

Dude, we understand you’re a good man. It’s just kick ass rock ‘n’ roll. I grew up with it. I graduated in 1979. I know what you’re talking about just kick ass making love music is what it is man

His solos were usually 45 minutes to an hour or so inside the concert, then he'd play for another hour or more. Imagine that kind of stamina. GOAT doesn't even begin to cover his abilities.

The rumor in the 1970's and 80's, when I was a kid/young adult, was that Neil was at some point instructed by Buddy Rich. I don't know if that's true but the influence is hard to deny.

I was a teenager in Australia in the early 70's just started work and our work crew had a pretty talented Heavy rock cover band doing Deep Purple and Led Zepplin on the rock pub gig circuit at the same time as Acca Dacca. Most of the bands knew each other but not closely because you put out so much on stage that you were r**ted when your gig finished. We run into them regular on circuit before their careers took off. You shook me all night long and Back in black are my favorites as they are many fans favorites.
Now that you've heard the masterpiece of Ennio Morricone, you have to watch the epic western this music was made for, so get ready for three hours of Sergio Leone's genious, featuring bad ass Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach and Lee Van Cleef....and the hanging man will become obvious.
