...love, love, love David Sylvian - he's an exceptional genius to me, he 'paints' his music... I can feel the strikes of his brush (reminds me of Joni Mitchell in that) ...I have an extended playlist of his... where to start? 'Darkest Dreaming', 'The Shining of Things' and 'Ride' - to pick just a few out of a huge catalogue of jewels... Having started on him, there's no turning back, Brandon - it just goes uphill from here... 💖

Im a huge fan of Japan and the post Japan careers of the members. I just love David's solo work from 1984's Brilliant Trees to 1999's Dead Bees and a Cake. The progression of his voice from sleazy tenor, to affected Bryan Ferry-esque to velvet baritone is an enjoyable journey. He always had great musicians around him to, be it his brother Steve Jansen on drums, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Fripp, Holger Czukay, David Torn, Danny Thompson, Jennifer Maidman, Mark Isham, Bill Nelson, Wayne Braithwaite, and the brief reconciliations with Mick Karn
@jonmansfield11643 ай бұрын
NOT an affected Bryan Ferry-esque voice. Sylvian has a far stronger and emotional voice, by far. I see the very slight comparison, but Sylvians voice is naturally his.

Wow, great reaction, Brandon. I love David Sylvian, either as one of the electronic music pioneers with Japan, but especially his solo and collaboration work, I feel this work was/is tragically underappreciated filled with, beautiful, poetic lyrics and highly emotional vocals from one of the very best modern crooners. Everything is better with Danny Thompson on double bass.

Danny Thompson is a proper legend of folk/folk-rock/jazz/"world" music. Back in the early 90s I went to a series of gigs he did in London celebrating his 35th year in the music business. There were all sorts of guests who turned up during the week, including guitarists John Etheridge (Soft Machine), Bernie Holland (The Love Affair, Van Morrison), Jakko Jakczyk (King Crimson) and John Renbourn, and singers like Marianne Faithfull, Jacqui McShee (Pentangle) and Mary Coughlan. Amazing week!
@simply_psi5 ай бұрын
@TheoZoffrok wow I would have loved to be there for that, I have seen Danny live on a number of occasions, quite a few times with the wonderful Transatlantic Sessions live band, and of course his legendry partnership with John Martyn, during a gig with John Martyn at Ronnie Scott's, John just stopped and said I need a drink, Danny can you take over for a bit, and he left the stage, I wondered if it was staged at first but by Danny's reaction it wasn't, Danny started with a few jokes and the went into and incredible freestyle jazz double bass solo, he then started a story.about him and John so I went to the bar to get us some more drinks and found John signing the chest of a very busy woman, when I got there, John looked up and heard the story that Danny was starting to tell, he said oh shit he's telling the Bruges story, I better get back and stop him.
@TheoZoffrok5 ай бұрын
@@simply_psi Funnily enough, on one of those evenings, which were at the Borderline [just off Charing Cross Road], John Martyn was playing a gig up the road at the Dominion Tottenham Court Road. Danny was convinced his old mate would turn up, and extended his set way beyond the usual cut-off point. The bastard never showed up though!
@simply_psi5 ай бұрын
@TheoZoffrok sounds like John, he was so unpredictable, and from what I understand their friendship was definitely a firey one and would often lead to full on fist fights, but I believe always finished with laughter and plenty of beer.

I can't believe this: you've just picked 2 of my 3 favourite David Sylvian songs: Forbidden Colours and Orpheus (the other being Wanderlust). How do you do this??? This is not the first time you pick what I consider a new artist's best song(s). Thanks for featuring these, Brandon: Sylvian's music and poetry are unique and deserve to be heard. And what a voice indeed!😍

You love David Sylvian? AWESOME!! What a discovery today. You know this is exactly music for me 😊 I did go with basically the most popular songs on Spotify, but I'm 100% sure that even many of his lesser known songs are brilliant and emotional as well. Wanderlust on my list now of course. You're very welcome. Clearly I can't wait for much more. I want to investigate Ryuichi's career as well 🥰

This version of Forbidden Colours is one of several - if memory serves, this one was rerecorded for the B side of Red Guitar, Sylvian's first solo single. Ryuichi Sakamoto was a heavyweight composer, and this match works brilliantly. It's obviously a matter of taste, but I slightly prefer the single version, which is more electronic. September I don't know, just gorgeous. As for Orpheus, it's simply *stunning* lyrically and musically. There's an amazing version recorded live for some European TV show, which goes some way towards explaining why, in addition to his abundant talents, David Sylvian was once pronounced 'the world's most beautiful man'! Oh, and yes, if you do Japan, you really must put Nightporter near the top of your list, an exquisite musical tribute to Erik Satie.

Great pick, we definitely don't hear Sylvian's voice enough. The movie Merry Christmas Mr Laurence had a great effect on me, it's worth catching, the music is great and Ryuichi Sakamoto gives a great performance for a non-actor (Bowie is his usual rather wooden self in films, he's a great singer... but doesn't sing in this one) I went down a very deep Japanese rabbit-hole at the time I recall, couldn't get enough of that culture, got into Yellow Magic Orchestra, dived into the Yukio Mishima story... Sylvian's 1st solo, Brilliant Trees, is an album well worth a listen to, and of course so much of his work in Japan (the group), Ghosts being my favourite, but lots to explore there. People often cite Boy George and Marilyn and Phil Oakey and Bowie as being central to the New Romantic sound and look, but Sylvian is often overlooked, but his voice and his face and his hair were right there, such a beautiful man...

David's compositions and productions are always so extremely tasteful and every note is perfect. Never a note too many, never one too few. He also always knows exactly when there needs to be a break in the music, he uses silence and pauses as an additional instrument. Great! I have loved his voice and the way he creates atmosphere since I first heard him in the early 80s. I can never get enough of his art. And yes: it is art!
