I think its about how the band members came together after years to record the new album (Perfect Strangers).. all the times they had, the tension and the differences in the past, especially between Gillan and Blackmore.

'Perfect strangers' was a great comedy sitcom from the 80's as well... about an American (Larry) and his very distant immigrant cousin (Balki) living together and the clash of cultures between the two... actor Bronson Pinchot did a great job as the East European immigrant learning to navigate himself in Chicago... Several movies were also named 'Perfect strangers'... including one in 2007 w/ Bruce Willis & Halle Berry. The late keyboardist Jon Lord was the sound u heard accompanying Ritchie Blackmore's guitar on the track... he would play his keyboards thru a guitar amp, which gave it a unique sound. Jon Lord was genius... such a remarkable talent - played on all Deep Purple albums from 1968 to 1998... he left the band amicably in 2002 to work on orchestral projects. He died from cancer in 2012 (R.I.P.) 'Smoke on the water' was in 1972... 'Perfect strangers' was 1984... so there was some musical progression over the decade.

Saw The Purple twice in one weekend on this tour, once in Worcester, Mass. and two nights later in Providence, R.I.. The show in Providence required me to drive from Southern New Hampshire to Providence in a major snow storm. We got there just as the lights went out, and since I had to be at work at 8 a.m. the next morning, I didn't even wait for the lights to come up at the end before I hit the road north. Worth every bit of time, energy, risk and money.

Deep Purple is a group who've actually disbanded and or have changed lead singers but somewhere down the road the original line up would rejoin again and it's as if nothing's changed, they fit 'perfectly' as they always did, like "Perfect Strangers", or at least, that's what MY interpretation of this song is. This song is pretty much my favorite by them, thanks for this reaction!
@woolhatmcfck7131

The song is about reincarnation and how the past and present self can never truly know one another. It is a past self talking to the present self. The "strand of silver" is what connects the soul through the astral plane. I remember reading somewhere that it was also influenced by The Chronicles of Elric, which has a tragic story of repeated lifetimes.

I know this comment is a bit late so you probably might not see it, but a few things to consider from somebody who was around when that tune was very popular: In the late 1970's and early 1980's, keyboards and/or synthesizers (not always the same thing, actually) were very common, and may have been responsible for some of the more difficult to describe sounds being heard. That repetitive riff heard throughout, and continued as the song faded at the end, can be done with guitars, and was a common gimmick in the early and mid 1980's. It is done by using effect pedals to soften the initial attack of the sound, and then suddenly muting the strings to end the sound without the usual fading you hear from more typical guitar sounds. But the safer bet is that it was done using a keyboard, as that was very common in this style of music, during that time. The term "perfect strangers" was common in the mid 80's, and only means the exact same thing as "complete strangers", or "total strangers". It is simply the concept of being strangers, and a perfect example of being strangers, and so, "perfect strangers". I hope this helps to clear up a few things.

It's not the same riff as Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" at all, just a similar rhythmic pattern. Besides, "Kashmir" wasn't influenced by classical music like Beethoven, but by Arabic music. And to be pedantic, you're probably thinking of "Händel" - who, coincidentally, lived in the 1700s. "Mendel" was the inventor of the scientific field of genetics, though he did indeed live in the 1800s.

Does anyone remember if this came before or after Rainbow? If I remember correctly rainbow was pretty much Deep Purple wasn't it? And I think some of the riffs from this album ended up on the Whitesnake album as well.
@erikthompson619
@erikthompson619 2 жыл бұрын
This was the first album after Rainbow split up (they have reunited twice) and Deep Purple reunited, released in 1984. Rainbow was formed by original Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple made one more album without him before breaking up, though), and Rainbow's last four albums - out of seven - also featured Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover. Both men are also part of the reunited classic Deep Purple lineup that you hear here. The connection between the two bands are even greater these days, since the late Jon Lord has been replaced by former Rainbow keyboard player Don Airey. Singer Joe Lynn Turner has also been a member of both bands. But no, riffs from this album most DEFINITELY didn't end up on "the Whitesnake album" (I assume you're referring to the multi-million selling "1987" album, but you'll find none of these riffs on any Whitesnake album), because nobody from this lineup of Deep Purple went on to join Whitesnake. Even if keyboard player Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice both played in an EARLIER incarnation of Whitesnake - and Whitesnake singer and leader David Coverdale was of course the singer of Deep Purple before he formed Whitesnake in 1978.

@@erikthompson619 good information thank you. There is a riff dancing around in my head that is most definitely on more than one album. Maybe I'm thinking of the Coverdale Page album that has a riff that's on either deep purple or white snake. I can't put my finger on it but it's there somewhere. One of these days I'll have to break out all the old CDs and find it.
