This was one of the great comeback songs/albums, this song leads it off, and that is why it starts the way it does, and the lyrics refer to them being perfect strangers for 13 years. You can see the singer (Ian) and guitarist (Ritchie) still do not like each other, and are giving each other the eye throughout this, this was video from thier first band meeting and jam since they split in the early 70's.

The video shows the Band reforming after 10 years apart in the mid 80`s. The various members had formed Rainbow, Whitesnake and Gillan in the intervening years. You have a huge Rabbit hole to explore for Deep Purple (One of the originators of Heavy Metal)

Love this song and this band. The lead singer (Ian Gillan) was a mentor and vocal hero for Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden. For your rabbit hole adventure with Deep Purple try some or all of these. Highway Star (looks like you did this one already), Speed King, Hush, Space Truckin', Under The Gun, Knockin' At Your Back Door, Smoke on The Water, & Wasted Sunsets. A slower, more bluesy one with a different singer is Soldier of Fortune (singer became lead singer of Whitesnake).

This was a "come back" song they were monsters in the early to mid 70's then faded a bit..Then they came out with this in the mid 80's and were back on top again for a few years. Another great song that cameo ut during their come back was " "Knockin' At Your Back Door" GREAT SONG!!! The Guitarist was in Rainbow (which lead to Ronnie James Dio). They have so many great songs.. BUT...the journey should be started at their best known and Iconic song "SMOKE ON THE WATER"....which tells the true story of the Casino they were playing at catching fire....then followed by "LAZY" or "SPACE TRUCKIN"

You are right on the money about the beat switch! When that iconic riff comes in they add an extra beat to the end of each 8 beat measure (making it 9 beats). I'm no drummer but that's the best way I can describe it. Def not an easy thing to do with a whole band following, big props to the drummer Ian Paice, like you said. Back then you had to have your playing chops up.

Good Morning Leo! This singer, Ian Gillan sang for Black Sabbath for a short time also, and recorded one album called Born Again, released in 1983 with them. It is one of my personal favorites but many Black Sabbath fans didn't like it. The song, Trashed from the album got some radio play and the video was on Mtv once in awhile in the 80's too. This song is from 1984 when Ian reunited with Deep Purple after recording the Born Again album with Black Sabbath. We were happy to hear some new Deep Purple music in the 80's when Perfect Strangers was released! Great reaction! ✌️

Next you should listen to by Deep Purple is "Smoke on the Water" Most, if not all, the first guitar riff new guitar players learn is the main guitar riff in this song The British rock band , shown here in 1971, wrote the hit song "," after watching the casino in Montreux, Switzerland, go up in flames next to a lake The story goes that on Dec. 4, 1971, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention were playing a gig at the Montreux casino. The band was nearly 90 minutes into the show, when someone in the crowd fired a flare gun at the wooden roof, which instantly caught fire. Deep Purple was in Montreux with a sound truck rented from the Rolling Stones to lay down some tracks. They were forced out of their rooms by the fire, but memories of the smoke billowing out across Lac Leman, or Lake Geneva, gave them a song title.

This was part of their 80's comeback...back in the 70's they were a monster band. Funny thing, back in High School in the 70's if you listened to Deep Purple people would automatically label you a doper or pothead.....but often the label fit LOL

Got to see this tour -1984 - in Chicago- fuckin great show- not to mention it was the loudest concert I’ve ever been to. Ears still ringing to this very day.... Jon Lord on the keys was vicious- nearly tipping his Hammond organ over several times- Richie Blackmore the guitar player was on his game - Ian Paice the drummer was perfect - Ian Gillan singing/screaming his vocal chords into overdrive- Roger Glover thumped his bass with a steady fury. Maybe check out Deep Purples - highway star- child in time- space truckin- hush- burn. So many to pick from. Enjoy 👍

These guys were huge in the late '60s/early '70s and helped define the hard rock sound for a generation. Went through a lot of lineup changes, then this was their big reunion album in the '80s with the most popular lineup of the group. Ian Gillan, the lead singer, also played Jesus in the original cast recording of the "Jesus Christ Superstar" album - and you should react to that whole album! Also guitar here is by Ritchie Blackmore who went on to form Rainbow, the band that featured Ronnie James Dio as singer for a spell. Deep Purple is connected to a lot of the classic rock universe.

Leo ! You should listen to Deep Purple’s Song called, HUSH . This is one of my favorite songs from them . I like the energy and rhythm of this one ! I would listen to this one in my Pickup truck. With the windows Down Really Loud! Just to Drowned out Other peoples Music that they thought Sounded Cool to them ? Until I Out Played them ! LOL!! Of course I was “showing “off”. Because they Were ! So I Had to out Play them in there So Called Music? Witch had No comparison to Hush ! But it was fun doing that to those kids . Especially in the warmer Months and during the summer! I would do that with Nazareth too . And play the Hair of the Dog As well just to Get back at those Kids who thought that their Music was SO Cooool ! So I Had to show them up ! Deep Purple started approximately the same time as Led Zeppelin, and were equally as good. But for some reason, they were a little overshadowed by Zeppelin. For more Deep Purple, you should react to either Black Knight or Highway Star. Black Knight is slower and makes your body want to move more, Highway Star has the energy.

We got about 8 people together and had front row to see Deep Purple back in the day. We all took a good amount of mescaline and had the time of our lives! I'd never seen a band do an organ solo but this guy fuckin KILLED it! (I'm sure the light show and mescaline helped.) I wouldn't recommend trying this these days, drugs aren't as clean today as they were 35 years ago. You never know what you might be getting.

You are completely right, they switch it up at the end by adding one beat to the last bar that is 5/4 instead of 4/4. They do this type of stuff a lot and Purple is a very technical band witch brilliant musicians and just like TOOL they still put out these banging tracks. Good job noticing the switch, there is clearly musicians blood running through your veins :)
