To be clear, Porter and Wagner didn't have a romantic relationship. Her love for him was totally platonic. The "breakup" if you want to call it that, was leaving his TV show to pursue a solo career. She had and has a husband, a contractor named Carl Dean. They've been married and deeply in love since 1966.

A lot of people assume Whitney Houston's version of this song is the original. But Dolly wrote this back in 1973. She wrote it as a farewell to her business partner & mentor Porter Wagoner, expressing her decision to pursue a solo career. Love Dolly's sweet version. Whitney made it into a powerhouse song.

Besides her talent, her song writing and her famous philanthropy (*), Dolly Parton is also hilarious. She has a ton of great one liners...like, when asked how long it takes to do her hair she says, "I don't know, I'm never there when they do it." (She wears wigs when performing.) (*) - For instance, early in the Covid pandemic, she donated 1 million dollars to help develop a vaccine.

It was Kevin Costner’s idea that Whitney sing Dolly’s song for the movie, The Bodyguard. Whitney was great, but Dolly’s is the one I listen to. It’s so personal, and heartfelt, you know she means every word. My parents used to watch The Porter Wagner Show, and it was so hard for Porter to let her move on. She wrote this in one night, along with her other mega hit Jolene! They were friends, and partners, not romantically involved.

Everyone (in the South anyway) used to watch Porter Waggoner’s tv show every week. He was the big star back then. Dolly was just a featured singer when she started with him. He had ALL the major country stars and talent on his show every week. My most memorable part of her on his show has to be the Live, between segment commercials (like podcasters now do) where she sold Breeze Detergent. Explaining what prize you would get in the latest boxes of detergent. She always ended with “Remember, You can Only get them in boxes of Breeze!” She’s tried to distance herself from that - but everyone who saw it remembers! You should watch some entire episodes of the Porter Waggoner Show - you will see more big stars including Dolly Parton, plus hit songs (and amazing session musicians) than almost anywhere.

Her early success was as a duo with Porter Wagner...she wanted to go solo and didn't know how to tell him, so she wrote this song in 3 minutes on a napkin on a tour bus. Dolly said she was driving home one night and heard Whitneys version on the radio (of course she knew Whitney was going to cover it, but hadn't heard it) and she said she pulled over she was so stunned at what Whitney did, and knew then Whitney owned it. Dolly has also said, and she's always been a brilliant business-woman, that when she recorded IWALY she "was able to put some $ in the bank", when Whitney did it she "was able to buy the bank".

A personal proximity to and perspective of problems within human society are required to even *begin* to address the issues that divide us and hold us back as a nation. Dolly Parton wrote songs about her own life experiences including the poverty that held her back as a child and then *did* something about it. How? By establishing a free book program open to children everywhere to help improve their reading skills after she managed to become a successful singer/songwriter. Every little bit any one of us does to support the Common Good for All really helps because *talk is cheap.* :D

We country fans, who grew up with Dolly, prefer Dolly singing this song. We know the story(which you are learning about) behind the song. Plus, Whitney sings at you. Dolly sings to you & with so much emotion that comes from her heart. 0 Dolly had a hit with this song 3x's. Went #1 in 73 & 82. In 95 #3(l think) as a duet with Vince Gill. Porter Wagoner sued Dolly after she left his show. They finally settled out of court & in 1980/81 their last duet album was released. He wouldn't speak to Dolly for many yrs. In the 90's he made up with Dolly. Dolly has written well over 5,000 songs. Like Loretta Lynn, Dolly is a great songwriter. Any song you pick you will like. Here are a few. After leaving Porters show; "Light of a clear blue morning." Stories of her home; "Coat of Many Colors," "Applejack," "My Tennessee Mountain home," "The letter," "Tennessee homesick blues." Beautiful songs; "Joshua" "Love is like a butterfly," Heartbreaking songs that may make you cry; "The bargain store," "Me & little Andy," "Down from Dover," "Just because l'm a woman," "Daddy come & get me." Fun songs; "9 to 5" "Muleskinners blues" "Why'd you come in here lookin' like that?" "Romeo." Religious songs; "The Seeker," "God's coloring book," "Silver & Gold," "HE'S ALIVE" Dolly didn't write this one. But hearing & watching her sing this song will give you chills!!! Ok, l'm done & l'll leave you with a cute joke. What do you call being locked up in a closet with Dolly Parton?? A booby trap😂😅😅

Good version but I think her best live version is from 2002 when she appeared on the Swedish TV show Bingolotto. I love the official video of "Light of a Clear Blue Morning" the official vid of "Those Memories of You" with Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris in their supergroup Trio. Her first charting single was the bangin "Mule Skinner Blues (Lady Muleskinner) and her first #1 was another great banger "Joshua". There's a youtube vid "Dolly Parton Performs at the Country Music Hall of Fame" honoring Fred Foster. There's several versions of this but the one with that title includes her humerous intro and also the whole performance. Another banger KZbin vid is "Dolly Parton-Train Train." Filmed live at Austin City Limits and will knock your socks off.

Wow. Never seen this vid before! I'm not into country that much either, but Dolly is special. More so for her philanthropic work in many recent years. But her comedic side is killer too! Oh, don't forget about her acting career also. I saw an interview with her one time, (I could listen to her talk forever, such a sweet voice), but anyway, she talks about her childhood and her mom asking her one time what she wanted to be when she grows up. Well, there was a lady of the night that worked there in town, and Dolly told her mom that's what she wanted to be when she grew up. Her mom was naturally distraught, I suppose. But Dolly says that she was so pretty with all that make up and big hair, tight clothes, whatever. Adult Dolly said she was dressed trashy and that's what she wanted to do. She said, So now you know why I dress trashy. And my fav line is when she says, "It costs a lot of money to look this trashy" Mic drop! I'm paraphrasing, of course, but I'm not far off. Super classy, dresses trashy and the voice of a southern angel. She is maybe the only person I wish could live forever so every generation can experience her. I love seeing vids of her walking around her amusement park, Dolly World, and talking to everybody, taking pictures, and best of all, hugging children and seeing all their smiles. She is a special lady for sure. Behind closed doors...??? But she hes been married forever, (I'm pretty sure), so she can't be that bad. I don't know any deep dives of her music, shamefully, but I'm here for the ride when the other fam members shoot in requests. 9 To 5 is also a fantastic comedy starring Dolly, Lily Tomlin and 🤮Jane Fonda🤮- working for their male chauvinistic boss, Dabney Coleman. It's 1980 so their is a lot of truth to what the ladies had to endure. Their revenge is the comedic part of the movie. 😂😂 Long live Dolly❤❤

Dolly had decided to leave her mentor, Porter Wagoner, and go out on her own. Porter wasn't happy about it and Dolly wrote this song to let him know how she felt. She had a #1 hit with it twice. Once on initial release and 10 years later off the soundtrack of a movie she starred in with Burt Reynolds ("Best Little Whore House In Texas"). Whitney's cover was an international hit. I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU HAS BEEN #1 ON 3 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS IN 3 DIFFERENT DECADES! In the 1970s when she first released it, in the 1980s when she sang it to Burt Reynolds in their movie THE BEST LITTLE WHOREHOUSE IN TEXAS, and the Whitney Houston version from the movie THE BODYGUARD in the 1990s. Dolly loved Whitney's version! Dolly said it took her to the bank both times she released it, but, when Whitney released it, Dolly could BUY THE BANK! She wrote it to explain to Porter Wagoner that she was leaving his show when her contract expired after 5 years to pursue a solo career...so, in a way, it was a break up song. In Whitney's version, it was delivered as more of a love song. Elvis was going to record it at one point, but Dolly had to make the very difficult decision to pull the plug when his manager, Col. Tom Parker called her the day before and told her Elvis had to get 50% of the publishing...because that was Elvis's standard practice (Col. Parker, in turn, got 50% of everything Elvis made...RIPOFF). She told him the song had already been #1 and was making her money, and there's no way she was giving up ANY publishing on it, let alone 50%!! She may be blonde, but she ain't stupid by a long shot! Elvis did sing it to Priscilla as they left the courthouse after finalizing their divorce, though.

Dolly is an incredible person. The only reason she is not a Billionaire is because of all the millions she gives to charity and her community.

Someone asked if she hated dumb blond jokes. She replied that they don't bother her, because to paraphrase, "I know I'm not dumb, and I'm also not blonde."

My love of Dolly goes as far back as her days with Porter Wagner.

Hey ever hear John Denver? You have to check him out, he’s awesome and had many many hits in the 70’s. Listen to “Sunshine on my shoulder”, but anything by John is great. Such a great voice and story teller
