To understand this moment is to understand what was happening back then. Eddie Murphy was the Michael Jordan of comedy and this was like, the last thing anyone could have expected. It's not that it's good or not that it's bad or even in the middle. But it's Eddie Murphy singing a pop song in the middle of his reign as the world's top comic. It was a strange time and place to be in. 35 years later I find myself singing the chorus.

When she got on the elevator three black dudes got on the elevator with her. One of the guys told the other to hit four, she thought he said hit the floor, which she did. They picked her up and helped her to her room. The next morning there was a dozen roses delivered to her room with a hundred dollars taped to each stem, from Eddy Murphy.

During my high school years Eddie Murphy was very popular. When a new movie came out starring him you knew what to expect: EXCELLENCE. As with many well known comedians who ended up becoming Hollywood Megastars, they got their start on SNL. If someone was lucky enough to be recognized or discovered by Loren Michael (producer of SNL) they pretty much had both doors open for them to try and make a name for themselves. If they were successful doing that on SNL the next road was going to lead them to the Silver-Screen. I remember watching Murphy on SNL before he started making movies. Naturally he was a good singer as well. Although he used to beat up and bash around MJ during his on stage comedy shows the two of them became very good friends; it was just all part of the show.
