Indeed, Rick James is underrated, as a producer, writer, and performer. He merged James Brown’s emphasis on funk grooves with P-Funk’s party funk vibe brilliantly. It’s a shame he flamed out so early. This is easily the best funk jam of the ‘80s, with Cameo’s “Word Up” and “Candy” close behind. If you want a real funk rabbit role to explore, check out James Brown’s early ‘70s JBs band, which, note-for-note, is the best funk band ever-before and after the Collins brothers defected to P-Funk. The JBs’ 1971 “Love, Power, Peace” live album in Paris is epic. Their best jam ever was “Can’t Stand It ’76,” from their “Hell” album. Starts out slow, then by the end, every instrument is in the groove-tightest, fattest funk sound ever. James surely was inspired by the JBs’ grooves.

Rick James really lived this. In about 1986 I'm trying to get into a swanky LA dance club, a limo drives right up to the front and this crew of 5 hot chicks gets out , then Rick James scoots out backwards. He pivots and makes a "pistol" with his thumb and forefinger of both hands. He throws a huge grin and gives everybody in line a shot with his finger guns - then they all boogied their way inside. It was cool as shit.

Check out Teena Marie's videos. Or as Rick James called her ....Lady T. She was definitely a black woman in a White womans body. Blacks mourned and had tributes after she died. She passed away 5 years after Rick. They were very close friends , and once were an item. Their famous song together was Fire and Desire. Teena said she used to get upset with Rick James for wearing the glitter in his hair. (Back then , it was made from fiberglass) She said it would cut her to pieces when it dropped off on her. Check out her singing Ooh Baby Baby at the tribute for Smokey Robinson. (This was Smokeys hit song) Teena looks like an older frumpy housewife here , but when she opened her mouth......Wow!!! Sorry , Smokey. Her version was best. Look for Teena Marie/Tribute to Smokey Robinson. Close your eyes while you listen. You would never believe she's a white woman. Her popular hit in the 80's was I just want to be your Lover Girl. R.I.P. Rick and Lady T.

Well, he was on fire for quite a while there. I always wonder whether I’d rather have a short but action-packed life or a long and mediocre one.

OMG!!!! I think I went through 4 or 5 cassettes of Rick James Super Freak. Man I had a great time when I was young and danced my ass off to this song!

Hey Mr. V. I saw Rick James in concert 2x's. He has a song called Mary Jane(yes, it's about weed)and when the song started at the concert, a 5 story lit joint came on stage from both sides of the stage and by the time the song was over everybody had a contact high! Damn, I miss those days. Lol. React to Mary Jane if you don't already know it. I always love your reactions.
