Hi Seph “The next night Elvis began with a song from his live repertoire, “My Boy,” which had been included in the August Las Vegas show. The song told the traumatic tale of losing a child through divorce, but Elvis wanted to be done with it fast. When Felton pushed for a third take, he exploded: “I told you to get this goddamn thing in two takes. I can’t sing it no more.” Take three was actually better; it lacked the long fadeout Felton wanted, but he knew better than to ask for another, confident that he could loop it in mixing to get the effect he wanted. The next number, Tom Jans’s “Loving Arms,” was perfectly suited to Elvis’s voice. The powerful but touching folk-country ballad instantly sparked the musicians to new heights of fresh, sophisticated playing. The song was as demanding on them as “My Boy” had been on Elvis’s voice, and when Felton cautiously asked for a third take, he was relieved to watch it yield a perfect master.” So, was My Boy hard for Elvis vocally, rather than emotionally? I’m really not sure.

So glad you're reactions are uninfluenced by what anyone has already concluded about a song. Not having to be told what to think about Elvis' songs, you react with freshness. I love "My Boy" - it's timeless and once again Elvis taps into people's feelings memorably. For some context, he cut this in 1973 when Lisa Marie was five years old; she was surely his pride and joy during a storm.

This one is just devastating. His father's love is palpable as expressed through Elvis' extraordinarily emotive performance. "And because you're all I have my boy..." Is there any purer expression of a father's boundless love for his son? When Elvis hits that breaking high note when he sings "and because" in the repeating end chorus, I just fucking just lose it. (6:22) All of my father-son buttons are pushed simultaneously. When I was 11 my parents sat my brother and me down to tell us that they were divorcing. Mom said that she had tried her best, making it clear that it was my father's decision. While my father's love was never in doubt, I rarely felt that he liked me. Mom and Dad didn't go through with the divorce and we never spoke of it again. But I've often wondered how my life would have been different if they had. As such, whenever I see a father playing with or enjoying being with his son, it nearly makes me cry, as I recounted to Sammy in the "peanut butter and jelly" thread. So this song, where the father is willing to sacrifice his own happiness because his love for his son is so strong, fills me with overwhelming joy and sadness.

An all time “volcano” is such a great way to describe the ultimate Bangers, Seph. Elvis lost his mother on this day in 1958. That broke his heart. He knew he was his mum’s “ pride and Joy”. He was heard to say “ I’ve lost everything. All I did was for you” at Gladys’ funeral. His own experiences fuel his heart and soul and voice in these ballads. Thanks for such a empathetic reaction. 🙏👌💕🕺

The original of this song is French, co-written by Yves Dessca, Jean-Pierre Bourtayre, Claude François. Its French title is "Parce que je t’aime mon enfant". It was released in 1970 and was a success in France, sung by Claude François, a very popular singer in France. It was adapted in English by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter. The adaptation was recorded by Irish actor Richard Harris in 1971 and then by Elvis Presley in 1973.

From the first time I saw him listen to Bridge Over Troubled Water & he was crying and drying his face with a towel. I loved the true emotions he felt and has never been embarrassed by it. It shows a strong man. 🎸🕺🏻❤️😳🙋🏼♀️🙋🏼♀️

@@Jeri_C11 hi Jeri, I saw Scotty's tribute too and like you...cried once again. Scotty and Craig love Elvis so much and put together videos that almost convice me they knew him( eventhough I know they never met). I agree with you about Seph...when I saw his reaction to " Bridge" I teared up too and knew he was a genuine fan who felt deeply about Elvis. The fact that he is reacting to EVERY song Elvis recorded speaks volumes about his dedication.
I expect you've gone through the lyrics by now Seph. Reason I ask is you missed 'playing' the start of the line: 'Life is no fairytale as one day you will know' in the last verse!🥰

2nd comment: Song Info: My Boy" is a popular song from the early 1970s. The music was composed by Jean-Pierre Bourtayre and Claude François, and the lyrics were translated from the original version "Parce que je t'aime, mon enfant" (Because I Love You My Child) into English by Phil Coulter and Bill Martin. A sentimental ballad, the song is sung in a first-person narrative from the point of view of a father to his young son under the presumption that the child is asleep and can’t hear what his father is trying to tell him. The father tells his son the truth of the strained relationship between the child's parents, and that all the father has left is the love of his son. Rather than risk losing that through a painful divorce, the father makes the decision to stay in a loveless marriage for the sake of his child. Actor Richard Harris performed the song "My Boy" at a music contest sponsored by Radio Luxembourg in 1971. Despite not winning the contest, Harris recorded the song and released it as a single later that year. Appearing on Harris' album of the same name, the song reached #41 on the Billboard pop chart and peaked at #13 on the Billboard adult contemporary chart. Elvis Presley recorded a cover version of "My Boy" in late 1973 that was included on his 1974 album Good Times. Presley's version of the song reached #20 on the Billboard pop chart and #17 on Cash Box. In the UK, where Presley's career had had something of a resurgence in the previous few years, it made the top 10 peaking at number 5 in the first week of January 1975. It was a bigger adult contemporary hit, spending one week atop the U.S. and Canadian charts in April 1975. "My Boy also peaked at #14 on the Billboard country chart. *Fingers crossed this goes through*

Again great info behind the song Sammy. I believe Elvis loved this song so much because I’m sure he remembered his own mother telling him how he meant everything to her, as her only child. He was her “life, her pride, her joy!” Here also, he must be thinking about his own child, Lisa Marie who had to go through her parent’s separation. So much emotion in his heart , soul and voice 👌💕🕺

So actually Elvis sang this song live a total of 7 times before he officially recorded it later that year. So it was during the Summer Festival of 1973 in Las Vegas between August 6th- September 3rd that Elvis sang "My Boy"- the very first time on August 6, 1973. To Elvis it was not a perfect performance and he would continue to perfect it until he felt he finally got it right. True Elvis Fact: Nine weeks and a day later after Elvis first performed "My Boy" live in the month of October of 1973 Elvis's divorce (from Priscilla) was finalized. Two months later, on December 13, 1973 at Stax Studio in Memphis, Tennessee Elvis would officially record "My Boy". He would continue to sing it live from time to time in the 1970's. Elvis more than once before singing it live introduced it as "a beautiful song" to the audience. I think "My Boy" became in a way personal for Elvis and too I think it became a favorite of his as well. Personal Note: I can understand why a father would stay in a loveless marriage in order to continue to be an active participant in his child's life. Sad but true: There are mothers who after separation or divorce from the father use the kid or kids as pawns in order to get what she wants out of her ex. There are too many true stories of that happening and too I have known more than one person who grew up denied access to their father. And all because their mother for whatever reason had continued to hold a grudge against the father of her children and used the kids to hurt him. Only in the end she also ended up hurting her kids. I will never understand parents who use their kids as pawns against each other. To say I do not agree with that kind of cruel behavior is a severe understatement. I do not have kids. But if I were a mother damn skippy I would want their father to still be a part of their lives even if it did not work out between us. I would not want the fall out of my relationship with my ex to have a negative effect on the relationship between my kids and their father. Fathers (or positive father figures/ father- like role models) play as much an important role in a child's life as the mother does. I am speaking as a daughter who had active father in her life but also as a friend of more than one person that did not have their fathers in their lives. Whether that is because the father was a willing absentee father (read: d*@dbeat) or because of other reasons. (The grudge holding mother being one of them.) Anyhoodlians, let me get off my soap box now 😅 Song Info will be in a separate comment 😀👍 FANTABULOUS REACTION SEPH GOLD STARS 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 TCB ⚡ & TLC ❤ & peace ✌& blessings 🙏 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕 P.S. @@SephPlays It's a good song, but more like a high B rank imo. Some songs penetrate my heart and soul but somehow this doesn't. I've been given this some thought and I'm not entirely sure what's bugging me about this song. I ought to like it as much as you right. It has very good lyrics and his voice is just impeccable. I think it's the lyrics staying in a bad relationship that's gone sour that bugs me, would that benefit the child.🤔 How can you hide those feelings and live in a lie?🤔 Both parents are unhappy, how will that affect the child in the long run?🤔
