A little fun story: This song came out in 2002, before the movie 8 Mile, and it was a huge hit. The movie producer (or whoever) told Em that they were going to use this song as a soundtrack because he could not make a bigger hit song, but Eminem was like "hold my beer" and he went and wrote Lose Yourself.

Source???? The Eminem Show was done. Em then moved onto helping produce Cheers and GRODT and was always intended to write original music for a soundtrack. The original song intended to be the official song was 8 mile.....as in the SONG 8 mile...from the 8 mile soundtrack......but Em was dissatisfied and thought he could do better so wrote Lose Yourself between takes. I've never at any point heard anyone ever claim COMC had any involvement with 8 mile.

He was angry because he had a little brother that also suffered abuse and was put into the foster care system, he does mention him in at least one of his songs. He doesn't perform Cleaning Out My Closet anymore, I have seen articles that say they have somewhat mended their relationship. Child abuse can continue through generations, he didn't do that, he made beauty with pain. He is an artist of the lifetime.

He brought up Munchausen Syndrome. A terrible disorder for the people around the person who has it, especially if it's the form Munchausen By-Proxy, which I believe he is describing. For what it’s worth, I’m a 36 year old man that actually watches this channel because of the generation gap. When reacting to songs and shows of things that were coming out for me growing up, it’s fascinating to see your reactions. Plus I think all of you are pretty genuine guys just chilling and learning through all of these reactions. I’d love to see you guys do “If I had” on Eminem’s debut album. It’s a back track that doesn’t get the love it should. I also think you’d be fascinated with NF. He goes hard, and I’d say do “Mansion” first from him. He will blow you away. Em's mom's name is Debbie Mathers. On his first (signed) album, he says, "99% of my life I was lied to. I just found out my mom does more dope than I do. I told her I'd grow up to be a famous rapper, make a record about doing drugs and name it after her." His mom sues him for $10million for that line.. and only ends up winning $1,377 or something like that from the suit. 2nd (signed) album, he says, "My f*****g b***h mom tried to sue me for 10 million. She must want a dollar for every pill I've been stealing". Third album, he says, "I just settled all my lawsuits; FUCK YOU DEBBIE!" Growing up, his mom would tell him that he was sick with munchausen syndrome, and would put prescription drugs in his food, as well as other toxic stuff. If you read up about it, it was a hard upbringing. By the way, I'm 39 (grew up while all this was going on), and I also watch the channel for the generational gap. I think it's amazing what you guys are doing here. You're helping inspire the younger generation to give a shit about lyrics, poetry, bars, etc. Keep it up guys.

I bought my first Eminem album when I was 11 with my Xmas money and related and adored it so much. The humour, the honesty and the emotions. This track hit home for me and I honestly don’t share the same reaction as everyone else. It used to shock me that this song shocks people. But now I’m nearly 30 I realise that not everyone has had a difficult upbringing and experienced childhood trauma. The thing is, you’re imaging saying those things about your parents who are probably nice and caring people. But having a parent who abuses you is not the same. In that situation you are an innocent child who deserves better. Eminem knows that and has given better when he has become a parent himself. This isn’t a blanket hate against parents, it’s an honest portrayal of thoughts and feelings looking back on a broken childhood.

This song means so much to me having lived almost the exact same childhood. I remember playing this song bagging up my clothes to escape an abusive home at 15. To this day I haven't heard a song as powerful as this one.

Watching y’all react to and jam out to music I grew up listening to is so funny and interesting and entertaining to me. Plus, it makes me smile to see y’all hear older things for the first time. Keep up the awesome work!

I feel you. I’m nine years older than you and I’m watching this for the same reason. I don’t think what any young person don’t realize there’s once you hit 21. The years start flying after that. Seems like one day you’re 25 the next thing you know you’re 50. I may be 52 But in my mind I still feel like I’m 25. Also I don’t expect these guys to know who Eminem is or was just like they shouldn’t also know a whole lot about Ice Cube, 2Pac, or biggie unless the parents were bumping that stuff when they were kids. I would’ve expected him to be listening to stuff from artists that are more closer to their own age but just like now they start experiencing and checking out stuff from different areas my music taste go way back to the 50s and of course I’ve heard stuff much older than that but not a whole lot. Twenty years before I was born.

I’m 34. Em was huge when I was a teen. He went quiet for a little while while the next gen were growing up. A couple of songs here and there but nothing like back in the day. I understand why these guys haven’t heard his old stuff. I’m also fully enjoying these reactions. As a massive Eminem fan I’m getting so much nostalgia watching and it takes me back to what I felt when I first listened to his songs. Keep it up! Should do a whole series.

Originally, a rap song was made of the classic 16 bars. The bar phase is almost like a line. Bar is like the segment or sentence. When people say, now that was a bar it was meant a good bar or line. But it became accepted to mean that bar had a scheme , wordplay or metaphor or entandre that stood out. Rap evolved to 32, 46, 64 bars etc as rappers started saying more or faster. There's many rappers that reference it. Giving a cool 16." I was gonna stop at 16, that was 32. This is 34 bars were only a 3rd the way through" Em-Mariah diss. It refers to lyrical lines in the rap

The syndrome he was talking about in the song was “Munchausen's syndrome” which is a psychological disorder where someone pretends to be ill or deliberately produces symptoms of illness in themselves. Their main intention is to assume the "sick role" so that people care for them and they are the center of attention.

Too much controversy, and too many stupid people who just didn’t get the point or the message of the song. Skill wise though, Darkness was the equivalent of building the Eiffel Tower out of playing cards during a tornado and having it be untouched by the wind. Double, triple, quadruple entendres on top of one another. Absolute lyrical masterpiece. And the sampling of ‘The Sound of Silence’ was perfectly matched.

New subscriber 🙋🏻‍♀️ IMO Eminem is a lyrical genius. The words he rhymes together are next level. And the way he channeled his pain into all his lyrics just blows my mind. He will always be one of the GOATs to me. Have you reacted to “Kim” off of Marshall Mathers LP? Or “My 1st Single” off Encore? Or “Untitled” off Recovery? Those are a few of my favorites that I’d love to see you guys react to because the first time I heard them I was like “Wait, what?” And then left them on repeat until I caught it all 😂

*I am 46 and became Eminem’s #1 fan when I was 20! I know every word to every song on every CD he’s made. I can’t believe you guys never heard him, I know your young. But he’s the greatest Rapper of all time. He’s in the Guinness Book of World Records as well! He said he was a victim of Munchausen Syndrome. His mom was putting things in his food to keep him sick. He said Remember when Ronnie died you said you wished it was me. Ronnie was his uncle who Eminem was close to. He committed suicide and Em found him hanging. His mom told him that she wished Em was dead instead of Ronnie. So there’s some of your questions answered!*

So wild to watch yall react and to realize how old this music is now at 34. Apart of what made him the greatest rapper besides shock factor is the fact that he added Choruses to rap and tone change, he changed the structural sound of rap and as you said in another video the music.. sounded like him. If you go back even further in the rap music world, you'll see his true influence in the industry... Interesting note in interview Em said this song happens to be the one he regrets most

I have always been an Eminem fan but I remember back when this song came out I can remember thinking how could someone hate their mom that much. Fast forward to a few years later hearing him say the line I am dead to you as can be hits me differently in this song when you hear the same words come from your own mother saying they wish I was dead after my daughter passed away lead me to the biggest depression and I can admit drug and alcohol problem I could ever have and I know other people may say this but I can honestly say if it was not for Eminem and his music I would honestly be dead right now the words in his music saved my life when I had no where else to turn. People can try to cancel Eminem all they want to but if Congress and Washington couldn't do it dumb butts online that have possibly really never listened to his music won't be able to do it his has way to loyal and large of a fan base
