Clapton's dad was from Montreal. His name was Edward Walter Fryer. He joined the Canadian army in WW2 and was stationed in Surrey, England southwest of London when he met Eric's mother. He was a musician and when the Normandy campaign kicked off on D Day he was off to the serious part of the war. He never returned to check up on Eric's mother and neither Edward nor Eric ever met each other. A Canadian journalist dug through the archives to piece some of his story together and gave it to Clapton. Edward and Eric are almost spitting images of each other.

@@chanperth Yes he was. Unfortunately, Edward Fryer had several children out of wedlock (that are known of) and seldom even acknowledged they existed. He also lured one woman away from her husband and children. Quite selfish and evil behaviour.

After an eternal absence, EC went on his Pilgrim tour which came by Dallas on May 22. In 1998, Ticketmaster was the gatekeeper and a long line was already formed at the grocery store office that also sold tickets. Before the "computer" opened, the clerk got our preference, floor or balcony. I didn't care, just so long as I got tickets because his shows were selling out. Every limo was rented out. EC opened the show with My Father's Eyes. His backup singers were fantastic. BTW, the Ticketmaster gods smiled upon me as I had scored FRC tickets. A true showman!

As a kid and a young man I never really understood some of these songs. We never had a dad around. But now as a father myself I get it. The strength you can get from your fathers love. My lady and I have been together for over 17 years now and I can’t honestly say that her father is one of the best men I have ever met, he is the example of what a great father is and only hope that I can live up to the high standard at which he has set. The trap is that because we didn’t have a dad as a kid no matter how much I do I always feel that could/should do more.

Asia and BJ, you would love "Change The World" with Eric and Babyface. The song was in John Travolta's movie Phenomenon. Great reaction!

When he starts talking about how to raise up that seedling.. and how that's when he needs his fathers eyes.. I get sad because the death of his son comes to my mind. I feel like most of his songs are very personal, so I can relate to many of the feelings because they are feelings all of us have felt... of course we can interpret them differently.

You will be completely blown away by “Key to the Highway” (STUDIO VERSION!!!) from the Layla album by Derek And the Dominoes. Eric Clapton and Duane Allman (two of the best guitarists on the planet) jamming out and playing just for each other. This is pure heartfelt, badass blues and art. This was a late night jam that almost didn't get recorded.

It's actually not a choir in the background. In the music video for this song there are three women singing the chorus who I imagine were Clapton's background singers at the time. This is also one of my favourite EC songs as well Asia. Y'all would love his track "Change the World," it's the single released prior for the movie Phenomenon starring John Travolta. It's a cover of a Wynonna Judd song produced by Babyface.

@@shanenolan8252 From Eric Clapton's biography; "I never met my father," Mr. Clapton told his biographer in 1985. "And I realized that the closest I ever came to looking into my father's eyes was when I looked into my son's eyes." ... Based on Canadian Armed Forces service records and on interviews with members of Mr. Fryer's family, I learned that Mr. Clapton's father was born Edward Walter Fryer on March 21, 1920, in Montreal. He would fall in love and marry many times. He died on May 15, 1985, at the age of 65, in a North York, Ont., veterans hospital. Except for his prized possession, a 30-foot sailboat named Jupiter IV, he died penniless. Mr. Fryer was unaware that he was the father of one of the greatest guitarists in rock history. Or, if he was aware, he never mentioned it. Edward Fryer was a born drifter. He left home at 14, learned how to play piano, and made a living singing in bars and nightclubs in Montreal. He enlisted in the army on July 17, 1940, and soon found himself with the Canadian contingent stationed in England. The army, however, did not take away his passion for singing and piano playing. While he was stationed overseas, Mr. Fryer made extra money singing and playing in pubs. He met Patricia Molly Clapton in 1944, at a pub in Surrey, just outside London. On March 30, 1945, Patricia Clapton gave birth to Eric. ... Michael Woloschuk The Ottawa Citizen Eric's father was a drifter, perhaps not by choice as he left home at 14 in the depths of the Great Depression, but not a good person at all. He had at least three other children that he never stuck around to take care of. Eric's half-brother, also named Edward, died in Vancouver, BC, sometime around 2015. He had a half-sister in Florida at one time and another half-sister named Sandra. Edward Fryer died of cancer, IIRC, in Ontario in 1985. His last "wife" Yvonne Colson had this to say about Edward Fryer. "He never planned for anything," Ms. Colson recalls. "He was a very selfish man. He strictly wanted what he wanted and didn't care who he walked on to get it. I think he was a very lonely man." "He could con the horns off a billie goat. In 1969, we were living in Florida, working hotels, and he met my boss's daughter in law. He talked her into leaving her three babies and they took off. He was up in Ottawa, playing the Holiday Inn. So I flew up there and got her back with her husband and her kids, but she left again and went with him." Edward Fryer was a pretty low sort of man. 🤷‍♂ eric-clapton.co.uk/interviewsandarticles/hisfatherseyes.htm

Around 10 or 12, Eric found out his "parents" were actually his grandparents, and his "sister" was his mother. She'd gotten pregnant at 15 by a married Canadian soldier stationed in England during WWII. I'm not sure if they ever met, I get the feeling from this song Eric's looking at himself in the mirror, searching his eyes for a glimpse of his father.

Alot of his 70's songs are great as well. Look for " The Core live - Derek And The Dominos live at the Filmore - After Midnight from the 70's ". And that's just the tip of the iceberg . This song " My Father's Eyes " was written about his father. He never got to know his mother or father. He though his grandparents were his mother & father . Later his mother came back and he knew the truth which turned his life upside down. As far as his father , if I'm correct he never knew his father but got to know who his father was after his death .

Sailing down behind the sun Waiting for my prince to come Praying for the healing rain To restore my soul again Just a toe rag on the run How did I get here? What have I done? When will all my hopes arise? How will I know him? When I look in my father's eyes My father's eyes When I look in my father's eyes (look into my father's eyes) My father's eyes Then the light begins to shine And I hear those ancient lullabies And as I watch this seedling grow Feel my heart start to overflow Where do I find the words to say? How do I teach him? What do we play? Bit by bit, I've realized That's when I need them That's when I need my father's eyes My father's eyes That's when I need my father's eyes (look into my father's eyes) My father's eyes (yeah) Then the jagged edge appears Through the distant clouds of tears I'm like a bridge that was washed away My foundations were made of clay As my soul slides down to die How could I lose him? What did I try? Bit by bit, I've realized That he was here with me And I looked into my father's eyes My father's eyes I looked into my father's eyes (look into my father's eyes) My father's eyes My father's eyes (look into my father's eyes) My father's eyes I looked into my father's eyes (looked into my father's eyes) My father's eyes (Look into my father's eyes) (Look into my father's eyes, yeah, yeah) Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Eric Patrick Clapton My Father’s Eyes lyrics © Warner Chappell Music, Inc
