In my opinion, Erykah Badu’s live recordings have a distinctly jazz vibe that the studio versions of the same songs lack. I’m not sure if she uses a different band to tour than she does in the studio but she is one of the few artists that I prefer to hear live. I actually attended one of her concerts in NYC where they recorded her “Baduizm Live” album. I was blown away by how tight her band was and the awesome background singers (which she allowed each to do short solos). I had to wait 6 months after the show before the album was released so I could rush to the store and buy it.

Erykah Badu’s studio recordings sound more R&B but those same songs on the live recordings have a distinctly jazz vibe injected into them. Her Baduizm Live album is a concert she performed in NYC and she debuted this song during that show. The entire concert was OUTSTANDING and the entire album is great song after great song. I recommend you do a reaction to the entire album. You will be blown away.

Badu is always spitting poetry and stories in her songs, and i always enjoy the live versions even more than the album ones, which are still great. her song Next Lifetime Live is one of my all time favorite songs of all time. i would call Erykah Badu NeoSoul though, which is sort of its own branch of R&B. her and Jill Scott, Angie Stone, and D'angelo are probably my favorite NeoSoul artists.

I heard Erykah the first time live.i was really lucky. I didn't know who she was, I was at Lilith Faire, that's how long ago this was, she came out, lit her candles and some incense, got her vibe going on the stage and then blew the whole audience away. I bought her album about a week later. Some of her songs do sound more like spoken word poetry set to music. She's really good. I do know this song is written about Andre 3000, and I know he wrote Miss Jackson about her. Tumultuous relationship.
