This song is about depression, and how some meds used to treat it can rob you of all emotion. Lithium, which the song calls out specifically, makes you completely emotionally numb. The song tells about how it's better to hurt, to experience emotion, even if it's despair, than to sink under those icy waters of numbness and apathy and to lose yourself and all meaning in your life.
