I love the pacing of this song. I love the way it ambles along because it's dealing with a heavy real message and it doesn't need to get loud, doesn't need to be amped up.

My interpretation of this song, is that it's commentary on the lack of empathy in the world. And, it hasn't changed too much in the X amount of years since its release. This song is still relevant.

True! It's actually more revalent than ever. People are even MORE judgemental and on their high horses than ever. People who are poor financially are judged and treated like they aren't even human. Women need to be able to access their medical health providers. Some state have been extreme on banning abortions which is in everyone's best interest. Anti abortionists claim people use it for birth control. I call bullshit on that that is extremely rare. They even banned DNC procedure. It's not just an abortion procedure 8t can save lives physically and mentally. Pregnant people who find out they are having a miscarriage should never ever have to just wait and let it happen at home eventually is enough to F'k anyone up. I went through this so I KNOW. Thank God I was able to get a dictionary to clean me out. Also used for other female issues like constant bleeding or clumps of blood. Then the lifestyle that killed Max. We don't know his life story and his wife and kids need to be lifted up by the community in any case. None of us have a right to judge anyone! "Walk a mile in their shoes". Be a good human!!!

I was at a giant rock concert show at the Atlanta Motor Speedway about 20 years ago, Everlast came out without House of Pain sat down with his acoustic guitar and performed, he got booed, he looked at the crowd of like 60,000 people who weren't listening and wanted to see Soundgarden and Metallica, and he said "if you didn't get it, it wasn't for you, have a good night". I can't tell you how much respect I got for that guy that day.

"What It's Like" examines a number of extremely difficult themes in a way few pieces of art ever could. We all have our struggles, we all have weaknesses, and we are all sometimes cruel. Empathy, love, and a desire to help others must be our response, otherwise we are no more human than the beasts of the field.

In the second verse, notice how he never says she's at the clinic for an abortion. She might be, but she could be going for a routine check up with every intention of keeping the baby. We don't know, and neither did the protesters who hassled the girl at the door. They just judged her without knowing the facts.

The song this album is from is one of the deepest I own. "Whitey Ford Sings the Blues is the second solo studio album by American recording artist Everlast, and the first one following his departure from House of Pain. It was released on September 8, 1998 via Tommy Boy Records, a full eight years after his solo debut album Forever Everlasting and after he had a major heart attack. "Whitey Ford" in the album title refers to the New York Yankees pitcher with that name. The record was both a commercial and critical success and went 2x platinum according to RIAA. It peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. Its hit single "What It's Like" became Everlast's most popular and successful song, which received him a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at 42nd Annual Grammy Awards."

@@kobegoat2485 It's funny AF to me that you disagree with your "rap god". Cause he knew Whiteys Revenge was better than I Remember, that's why he made Quitter... Again, Quitter contains 17 references to a heart attack...9 from Em alone. Then he made funny of his religion, which is weird...never understood why you need to be a certain race or ethnicity to have a particular belief, could you elaborate for your "rap god"? You thought that was a good shot, right? He said Everlasts album went wood, even though it went Gold within 2 or 3 weeks 🤦‍♂️ He confused Blues/Rock with Country, cause he's so intouch with Black people. And he said Lethal left for Limp Bizkit, which isn't true. Everlast disbanded HoP, Lethal chose not to be unemployed 🤦‍♂️ What was good about it? It was 5 on 1, and sounded like a temper tantrum...while Everlast was cool, calm, and collected 🤷‍♂️

I've always liked this song but never knew who sings it. And I've never heard the lyrics so clearly. Wow. Like the song even more.

It was low energy so you'd pay attention to the message. Listen to the song Semi Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind and you'll see what I mean. High energy song but you really have to listen to get the message.

The guy singing this song used to rap in the band House Of Pain. HOP was silly and very high energy and then he leaves to do a country album, the 90s were odd.

Had this song on an album called Buzz Ballads. Introduced me to artists like Staind, Fuel, Eve 6, Sublime, etc. Nearly every song on that album is a bop.

This song is great! It makes me feel like an alternate take on the same concept as "Pieces of You" by Jewel

this whole album tells a story, from beginning to end, even the shorts bits in it have deeper meaning. Whitey Ford Sings the Blues...just fantastic.

I think at it's core, this song is about empathy and not rushing to judgement.

You definitely NEED to hear his acoustic remakes or covers asentually. This song in particular sounds 1,000x better after getting some age in his voice. Makes it sound more real than coming from a kid.
