This was such a great song that has aged well and deserved more accolades than it actually received. It profoundly touches on the ugly underbelly of America and anyone who has experienced poverty, crime, and the fading American dream should be able to relate to it instantly. Perfectly executed, Everlast

26 years... scary that it's coming up on being a 30-year-old song really soon. One of the greatest songs ever penned, in my opinion. Very simple instrumental, very simple structure... but lyrics that should impact in a timeless manner.

IMHO it's the condensation of the whole song into that single line...We're all gonna die and the circumstances we happen into when we are born define a great deal of who we become, so we should never look down on people or blame them just because their circumstances are different...

I lived homeless for 2 yrs. I actually met my wife 4 yrs ago while I was homeless. We talked and had dinner a few times. I even tried to talk her out of associating with me. Thankfully she was hard headed and got me off the street and gave me a second chance at life. We have been married since. This October will make our 4 yrs anniversary. I can honestly say with no doubt she saved my life. I was not on drugs or anything. Just got put out by a cheating wife and had no family.

Everlast has a crazy backstory (It's really just the one dude, Erik Schrody)...go watch some clips from his Rogan episode...good on ya catching the hip-hop influence...Everlast actually started with the rappers DJ Lethal and Danny Boy and formed House of Pain...(They had that smash hit, "Jump Around")...and he was literally there opening for Dre and N.W.A while they were producing Straight Outta Compton...He's toured with Rage Against the Machine, The Rammones, and the Beastie Boys...dude has seen a lot...he even beefed with Eminem for a bit...

I was homeless for a couple years as a teen. Mom had a new boyfriend who sold drugs and abused her. He didn't like me and he 'convinced' her to put me out when he came along. Sleeping in abandoned houses, parks, looking for a place to clean up, or go to the bathroom, where and how to wash your clothes....daily struggles. 30 years later, I own a home, have a husband, and me and mom have a pretty good relationship. (the deadbeat guy is long gone) . I learned a lot about life, a lot about myself, while out on the streets. It's an experience I wouldn't change, because it made me the man I am today. But boy, was it hard.
