Sinatra's New York, New York song is my favorite. Ok so I am from NYC but they play this song even on New Year's eve after dropping the ball. Like the anthem everyone sings along. You will probably recognize it when you hear it.

Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. were great friends of Frank Sinatra. They performed together at times and were known as “The Rat Pack”. You should check them out sometime also. Two of my favorite Sammy Davis Jr. songs are “The Candy Man” and “Mr. Bo Jangles”. A couple of good Dean Martin songs are “That’s Amore” and “Ain’t That a Kick in the Head”.

One thing you should know about Frank is that the people playing the music behind him were always some of the most accomplished jazz musicians in the world. Some of his best work was sung with the Count Basie Orchestra, playing arrangements by the legendary (and young at the time) Quincy Jones. You should check out Frank singing "Fly Me to the Moon," "Luck Be A Lady," "That's Life" and the song that plays every night at New York Yankees baseball games, "Theme from New York New York." Frank Sinatra is a legend, and there has never been anyone bigger in music. He may have grown old and passed to the other side, but Frank remains the definition of "cool." No one has ever eclipsed him in terms of universal popularity. The fact that you're listening to him now and digging his music speaks volumes about the universal appeal of Frank Sinatra. My Way was played at my grandfather's funeral. Beautiful song that you appreciate more as you get older. I'm 27 and want this played at my funeral. I was a huge rap head myself but now I listen to all kinds of music. When listening to other genres of music, even ones you think are so far away from anything resembling rap, you start to realise just how much all the genres overlap and how much rap was inspired from other genres, whether unintentionally or unintentionally.

When you say this song could be used at a funeral, I know of a notable example. Alan Kulwicki was a racecar driver from Wisconsin with an engineering degree who entered NASCAR. Typically NASCAR drivers drive for a team owner, but with his engineering prowess and college education Kulwicki decided to form his own team with himself as the driver. He was an underdog for sure, but in 1992 he stunned the NASCAR world by capturing the Cup Series championship, beating out teams with far more funding and resources and becoming the first owner-driver in NASCAR’s modern era to accomplish such a feat. It’s easily the biggest championship upset in NASCAR history. But just months later, at only 38 years old, Kulwicki would perish in a plane crash. He was a fan of Sinatra and given his life story there was no more fitting final song to send him off to than “My Way”.

Sinatra was the king of the crooners. Growing up in the sixties and seventies I would see him and the other crooners like Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and Gene Kelly to name a few on TV all of the time and never thought much about. I guess I thought that they would always be there like old friends but then they got old and died. As each passed away it was like wow! A steady constant from my childhood and then into being an adult were gone one by one. Kinda always sucked, ya know? I'm thankful I got to see them all. But also like hugely Sinatra's and Nina Simones' covers and the terrible rendition by Sid Vicious. In 1968, David Bowie wrote the lyrics "Even a Fool Learns to Love", set to the music of the original 1967 French song "Comme d'habitude", composed by Claude François and Jacques Revaux. Bowie's version was never released, but Paul Anka bought the rights to the original and rewrote it into "My Way". The success of Anka's version prompted Bowie to write "Life on Mars?" as a parody of Sinatra's recording. Bowie noted that Rick Wakeman "embellished the piano part" of his original melody and Mick Ronson created a fantastic string parts. Frank's singing style, particulary his phrasing was and is unique to him from his start in the big bands of the 40's and has been much studied and emulated by singers after him to this day. . In his younger years he also was the first singer to have created a a phenomenal fan base of devoted teenaged girls called the "bobby soxers" (like my Grandmother), who screamed and swooned "oh Frankie" at his early appearances. Of course his popularity grew and exceeded beyond that of a teenage idol, to becoming a legend in his own time. There was and is only a once in a lifetime phenom performers like Frank Sinatra as there is and was only one Elvis Presley, or Luciano Pavarotti. ( honorable mention) to the screaming devotees of the Beatles.

My 2nd favorite song of all-time. I was lucky enough to see Frank at Radio City Music Hall when I was a freshman in college. It's sadly one of my greatest achievements. 😄 He also did my second favorite song of his that night "The House I Live In". 'That's Life' is one of those Sinatra songs, where he seemed to enjoy himself while singing it. I was fortunate to see him live one night in Ottawa, when I was about 22. He performed as a favor to Ottawa boy, Rich Little, to help raise money for the Children's Hospital. I went with both of my parents and I am so glad I did. My Way was one of my Father's favorite songs, but he loved them all. He played Frank in our house for as long as I remember. My Father is gone now, I am 65 and I have introduced this man and his voice, to my children. I was not a fan, as a teenager, but I love the guy now.
