A great guitarist in the studio before he was ever famous. Was once a "Beach Boy." He died recently of Dementia, (Alzheimer's) He found himself on stage, and in the middle of a song he'd played and sang a thousand times, forgetting the words. Glenn had made his diagnosis public a few yrs before, so when he was struggling to remember the words, a beautiful thing happened that brought him to tears. As he struggle to remember the words, the audience instantly knew what was happening to this poor man, and began singing the next verse for him. After finishing the song, a teary Glenn Campbell, wiped his eyes, and thanked the audience for helping him. It was one of the most touching things I have ever witnessed. I cried as well, as I was my mother's caregiver for 9 years, as she suffered from this horrible disease. People can be real jerks, but they can also be very loving and kind. Thanks Harri

Glen was one of the most often used guitarists in the legendary Wrecking Crew, a group of studio musicians that played on almost every hit record recorded in Los Angeles in the '60s. Few people know Glen played on Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night" (as well as the whole album throughout). And he toured with The Beach Boys (he also played on some of their early tracks) in 1964-65, replacing Brian who was having problems.

Yes, John Hartford wrote this beautifully complex masterpiece; Glen Campbell blew life into it and made it wildly popular. My wife and I had great seats at a concert he did locally several years ago. I wanted, especially, to hear this song and to see him play “Classical Gas” in person. He was better than I could have imagined. I enjoyed your reaction comments and would add: to me, it has always seemed to me as though the protagonist is more deluded than sad - until the final verse. There, he acknowledges his current poor circumstances and seems to gently make peace with the idea that he is never going to see her again. This one is on my list of Top 10 Songs Ever. I can tell you this: it’s harder than hell to remember all the words to it. It’s on rotation in my truck where I’ve probably heard it 400 times and still today I could not speak or sing the lyrics in full, in real time. I doubt that I could write them all down accurately either, and I’m usually pretty good with lyrics. I’ve told my adult kids that, in terms of songs written before their time, Gentle on my Mind and King of the Road, by Roger Miller, scream Americana and hopefulness like few others. Thank you, Harri.

Harri, since I love watching your reaction videos, I wanted to make a few comments about this song and its lyrics. I don't think I need to talk much about Glen Campbell, who was a legendary studio musician, played with the Beach Boys for a while, etc. There is lots of good information about him. But this song, as others have mentioned, was written by John Hartford, when he was working in cotton fields of Missouri, presumably as an itinerant worker. Interestingly, he originally intended it as a bluegrass song, not a pop song, and John Hartrord is said to have written the bulk of it within 20 minutes after watching the movie Dr. Zhivago. Trains play an important part in that movie, and they play an important part in this song but those little tidbits are also readily available on the Internet for those that care to find out. What people tend to miss about this song is how it harkens back in American history to the great depression. A time when 25% of the population did not have work, and/or had lost their farms, and sought work. This period lasted through the 1930s and for many Americans continued through the 1940s and 1950s. Today we associate itinerant workers mostly with immigrants, but it is a distinct part of American history, and not just for immigrants. Many out of work Americans (then called 'hobos' or 'hoboes' ) sought employment by traveling from place to place, and one of the ways they did it was by hopping freight trains and slipping into boxcars. This was not legal, and workers were at risk from railroad 'bulls' (private police hired by the train companies to keep the hoboes away.) The fourth stanza of this song mentions dipping a cup of soup from a burning crackling cauldron in some trainyard, which is a scene that played out again and again in these peoples' lives... and the cauldron in the trainyard played a similar part to a soup kitchen in the cities... a place where out of luck people shared what little food they had, and huddled against the cold. So the idea of travel in this song, which today most people associate with a sort of wanderlust, was also, and mostly, a forced sort of travel, by millions of people seeking work wherever they could find it, and traveling thousands of miles to make money to send to their families and loved ones back in the places they called home. So this song has a lot to do with people who for one reason or another are forced to rely on their memories for the connection to their loved ones, past and present. Now since I mentioned hoboes, I would like to mention another song that makes reference to them, which you might also like to do a reaction video to... It is Merle Haggard singing "I Take a Lot of Pride in Who I Am." Finally, I would like to thank you for your entertaining videos... I especially like seeing your reactions to them as I find you to be a thoughtful and sensitive reviewer.
