Just so you know Ahmad. Dap and Malachi were real street dudes that lived on theblock that Guru and Primo lived on when they just were blowing up as Gangstarr. They were the dope boys on the block. Malachi was a boxer that didnt even want to rap, but caught a case and to get out of jail, Primo spoke to the judge when he was being sentenced and the judge said no i dont care if he is a boxer, you are a famous musician, ill let him out if you make him a music artist and he has a legal income coming in so Primo did that.

Dope album. This proves that not because something goes platinum that means that is better than underground rap. Not everyone in NYC rap about struggle, but you have to live in NYC to realize that most things in NYC is a struggle. Life is on the edge here. You can definitely get snuff out if yu are not careful and you don't have to be in the hood either.

Word back then we didn’t have KZbin or etc it was the fat TV 📺 you either make it or don’t with talent however New York was a gritty nasty place back then crime, broken family, drugs, racism, lack of education and love can creates mental illness and confusion also stuff in the food and water make you go crazy 😜

This era of NY rappers came up in the 70s & 80s NY which was a war zone devastated by decay, poverty, crack, neglect, zero funds for social programs & schools, etc. It was not a safe place to grow up so most will have a story or two to tell. The late 90s is when NY started to get gentrified and become a lot safer. These rappers now a days cannot tell the same stories, not because they were born with silver spoons in their mouths but because the struggle is not the same.
@jasonrodgers5533 Жыл бұрын
LOL!!! Thanks for explaining this. I always wondered about this as well. Being a kid out of the 70s and 80s and growing up in the southwest suburbs of Houston, I would listen to hip-hop from New York and be like "Wow, you can't even walk down the street without running into a dealer or a stick up kid???" And it sounded like it was an issue in every burrough... ha!!!

Kool G Rap is the best ever to rap with a lisp. That’s probably who you were thinking of. Also, that whole Group Home was entirely produced by Preemo, and imo it’s some of the best beats he’s ever produced.

Group Home is Melachi The Nutcracker and Lil Dap. They were a part of the posee Gangstarr Foundation (The G.U.R.U., D.J. Premier, Big Shug, Jeru The Damaja, Melachi The Nutcracker, and Lil Dap). Back then, Hip-Hop groups usually formed posees during that Golden Era of Hip-Hop

Classic track! DJ Premier actually produced Group Home’s whole first album along with Jeru the Damaja’s first 2 albums and of course the Gang Starr albums. They were all a part of the Gang Starr Foundation. Also, Kool G Rap is another rapper with a lisp, but his words still cut through the track like a hot knife on butter

I lived in Harlem for about 5 years in early 2000's. It's rough man. The mentality of the people is irreparably broken. People on top of people. 75% of the people I knew were on the corner daily and nightly. People go their whole lives without driving a car or leaving the country. Blacks and Hispanics lived together but most of them don't know a single White person. Heavily segregated. Coming from the suburbs of AZ it was a shock for sure.

Lol it's funny you said everyone from NY raps about the struggle, but right before you said that he rapped "I wasn't living rich but I also wasn't poor" which was him admitting he wasn't doing too good, but also not too bad. The humbleness in that line is partly why that first verse is one of my all-time favorites.

This album came out at a time when Premier was producing whole albums and could not lose. It’s true Group Home was known for being crazy lyricists but when matched with Premos beats this was a crazy vibe that was all part of that timeframe. Mid 90’s hip-hop was on fire. This album is a non skip vibe. ✌️

Good reaction. Despite Group Home being borderline wack lyrically, this might be one of my most played albums of all-time. "Livin' Proof" is the epitome of grimey '90s NYC hip hop. Premier's production on this is flawless. Aside from "Moment of Truth" by Gangstarr, tghis is arguably Premier's dopest produced project from top to bottom. "The Realness" is my fav beat off this album.

The Group Home is Malachi (the first one) and Lil Dap (the shorter one you said was nice). Lil Dap was probably the first "Lil" rapper I ever heard. He's been part of the Gang Starr Foundation since '92. Then Lil Fame came out in '94 with MOP. By the late '90s, the South caught on and Lil rappers starting coming out all over the place.
