He wrote this song when he was living in Berlin for a period in the 70's - the Berlin Wall was still standing. You should watch the live version he did in Berlin in 2002. Such a fantastic vibe. Bowie was a true talent

Thomas Dolby is pure magic on the synths. 🥰 Bowie thanked everyone before the song because people might tune out at the end, and go grab a Coke or popcorn or whatever at home, between artists. He made sure all 1.5 *billion* people tuning in knew who everyone was, because he was all class, all the way. 🥰

Oh! And he did a complete set, like Queen did, not just the one. This was the finale and -man- what a finale! 🥰

Oh oh! He also came out with Alison Moyet, Bob Geldoff, and Pete Townshend to do backing vocals for Paul McCartney's "Let it Be" and watching everyone interact on the stage is...indescribable. 🥰

Wow, great performance Dereck! Bowie is the best. And Thomas Dolby on synths! Thomas Dolby is one of my absolute favorites. So many great songs from him: One of Our Submarines, Blinded Me With Science, The Flat Earth, May the Cube Be With You (with George Clinton), I Love You Goodbye, Flying North, Budapest By Blimp, I could go on and on. To see Bowie and Dolby share a stage is mindblowing!

I saw David Bowie live by accident! I went to the Isle of Wight music festival to see another act and didn't even know he was playing! It was crazily great! ✌

I saw David Bowie during The Glass Spider tour , in 1987. I was close to him. J'ai cru que j'allais mourir , écrasé par la foule. J'avais de la buée sur mes lunettes.

Bowie was noted for not playing this song the same way twice. My favourite version is the live in Berlin video. It was performed in 2002. Earl Slick on guitar, and Gail Ann Dorsey on bass/vocal. Both wicked players. Imo made Hero's the best version instrumentally wise. The synth playing was stellar, too.

No live version compares with the studio original, though. Especially not the Live Aid version.

These were the days when my family became aware that I had a crush on Bowie. I hardly knew anything about him or more than 3 songs. But I was so "in love". Our parents did let us watch the concert but we had no VRC to record it. So the next day there was the rerun and I would not let anyone watch something else. 😍 😁

I think one of lesser known song by Bowie is from the motion picture «The Falcon and the Snowman», the tune is called «This is not America» with great jazz Pat Metheny Group.

I was 19 years old when Live Aid happened and I watched the whole event live on TV. It was a baking hot day in London. Queen stole the show but Bowie and The Who were also very good.

I find the original pre-remastered performance best. The audio has seriously lost something, I was pleased when the Live Aid performances were re done but this spoils the vibe of the original even though the quality is not as good, but it has a different spirit.

I've never been a fan of this version or any other live version of this song. But especially not this version. I mean, it's not bad. It's a great song. It's just that by giving it this sort of "skip along" beat, it transforms the dark, bittersweet melancholia of the original into something kitschy you might find a cover artist perform in Las Vegas. It's NOT a happy song, dammit. David should've known better.

*Dereck,* Indeed, a very 80s sound here, something surfing on the wave of Irish rock bands of the time such as *Simple Minds* or *U2.* Peace, folks. 🤗
