A fun smooth sailin' reaction ⛵! The song's lyrics: "Rock On With Your Bad Self", became a popular saying in the 1970s. Fleming Williams is the lead singer. Bernard St Clair Lee and Hubert Ann Kelley are the background singers. Rock The Boat was released as the third singles from The Hues Corporations' 1973 debut album: Freedom For The Stallion. It was written by Wally Holmes. It was produced by John Florez. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100, #1 on the Cash Box 100, #2 on the R&B chart, #5 on the Dance Club chart and #12 on the Adult Contemporary chart. This live performance is from the Dutch TV show: TopPop, on August 8, 1974. The song is considered one of the earliest Disco songs. Some authorities proclaim it to be the first Disco song to hit #1, while others give that distinction to the single: "Love's Theme", by the Love Unlimited Orchestra, a chart-topper from earlier in 1974. The instrumental #1 Pop chart song: "TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia)", which also had a Disco sound, was released three months before the single: "Rock The Boat", is also mentioned in the conversation as well. In an interview with Classicbands.com, Hues Corporation member Bernard St Clair Lee said: "It was a song that you could do anything on. You could cuddle or you could get crazy if you wanted to. It was a love song without being a love song. But, it was a disco hit and it happened because of the Discos". A dance to "Rock The Boat" is commonly performed at weddings and birthday parties, involving many people sitting down in a row and "rowing" a boat to the tune of the song. The song has been featured in some TV shows including 📺: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2018), Two And A Half Men (2007), The Simpsons (2006, 2009), Ed (2003), The West Wing (2001), The Sopranos (2000), The X-Files (1999) and more. The song has been featured in some films including 📽: The Spirit Of '76 (1990), Carlito's Way (1993), Lawn Dogs (1997), The Devil's Own (1997), Outside Province (1999), Man On The Moon (1999), Roll Bounce (2005), Milk (2008), The Martian (2015), Disco (2017), The Comeback Trail (2020), Somewhere In Queens (2022) and more. Lyrics 🗒: So I'd like to know where, you got the notion Said I'd like to know where, you got the notion To rock the boat (don't rock the boat, baby) Rock the boat (don't tip the boat over) Rock the boat (don't rock the boat, baby) Rock the boat Ever since our voyage of love began Your touch has thrilled me like the rush of the wind And your arms have held me safe from a rolling sea There's always been a quiet place to harbor you and me Our love is like a ship on the ocean We've been sailing with a cargo full of love and devotion So I'd like to know where, you got the notion Said I'd like to know where, you got the notion To rock the boat (don't rock the boat, baby) Rock the boat (don't tip the boat over) Rock the boat (don't rock the boat, baby) Rock the boat Up to now, we've sailed through every storm And I've always had your tender lips to keep me warm Oh, I need to have the strength that flows from you Don't let me drift away, my dear, when love can see me through Our love is like a ship on the ocean We've been sailing with a cargo full of love and devotion So I'd like to know where, you got the notion Said I'd like to know where, you got the notion So I'd like to know where, you got the notion Said I'd like to know where, you got the notion To rock the boat (don't rock the boat, baby) Rock the boat (don't tip the boat over) Rock the boat (don't rock the boat, baby) Rock the boat (don't tip the boat over) Rock the boat (whoo-ooh-ooh!) Rock the boat (rock on with your bad self) Rock the boat (rock on with your bad self) Rock the boat (rock on with your bad self) Roll yeah, roll yeah, roll yeah, baby Roll yeah, roll yeah, baby (Rock the boat) Repeat 13x The Hues Corporation Info 📰: The Hues Corporation was a musical act formed in Santa Monica, California in 1969. The group's name was a pun on the Howard Hughes Corporation, with the 'hue' (a synonym of 'color'). The original choice for the group's name was: The Children Of Howard Hughes, which their record label turned down. The original band had a lineup of three singers and three sidemen. The sidemen were Joey Rivera from The Checkmates; Monti Lawston; and Bob "Bullet" Bailey, formerly of The Leaves. Bob "Bullet" Bailey, Joey Rivera and Monti Lawston left the band to form the band: Goodstuff. Before achieving mainstream success the band were the opening act for a list of headliners that included Frank Sinatra, Milton Berle, Nancy Sinatra, and Glen Campbell. The band's members at the time of their first album were Bernard St Clair Lee (April 24, 1944, San Francisco, California), Fleming Williams (December 26, 1943, Flint, Michigan) and Hubert Ann Kelley (born April 24, 1947, Fairfield, Alabama). They are best known for their 1974 single: "Rock The Boat", which sold over 2 million copies. The group released six albums from 1973 to 1980. The group's record label signing lineup was formed in 1969 by songwriter Wally Holmes who founded the group with his friend Bernard St Clair Lee. Female singer Hubert Ann Kelley was found at a talent show in Los Angeles. As a result of notices placed in Southern California record stores, Karl Russell also turned up in the group. They recorded a single: "Goodfootin'" / "We're Keepin' Our Business", that was released on Liberty Records in 1970. The single did not chart. The group's first big break came in 1972, when they were invited to appear in the Blaxploitation film: Blacula. They were also asked to record three songs for the film's soundtrack: "There He Is Again", "What The World Knows" and "I'm Gonna Catch You". After their participation in the Blacula film project Karl Russell was replaced by Fleming Williams and the group signed with RCA Records. The group's 1973 debut album: "Freedom For The Stallion", produced the lead single of the same name which reached #9 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #63 on the Hot 100. The album's second single: "Miracle Maker (Sweet Soul Shaker)", failed to chart. It was the release of the group's third single from the album: "Rock The Boat", that became a #1 hit on the Hot 100 and the group's signature song. Initially, the single appeared as though it would also fail to chart, as months went by without any radio airplay or sales activity. Not until the song became a Disco favorite in New York did Top 40 radio finally pick up on the song, leading to the record to finally enter the Hot 100 and zipping up the chart to #1 the week of July 6, 1974, in only its seventh week on the Hot 100 chart and fourth week in the Top 40. It stayed on the Hot 100 chart for 18 weeks and sold over two million copies earning a Gold disc awarded by the RIAA on June 24, 1974. It also went to #6 on the UK Single chart. The song is considered one of the earliest Disco songs. Some authorities proclaim it to be the first Disco song to hit #1, while others give that distinction to the single: "Love's Theme", by the Love Unlimited Orchestra, a chart-topper from earlier in 1974. The group's debut album peaked at #20 on the Billboard 200 album chart and at #59 on the R&B album chart. After the success of the single: "Rock The Boat", The Hues Corporation's other charted singles on the Hot 100 included: "Rockin' Soul" (#18 1974), "Love Corporation" (#62 1975), and "I Caught Your Act" (#92 1977). The group was unable to duplicate the success of their earlier hits and disbanded sometime around 1980. Whereas some sources claim the year of disbanding as early as 1978, archive footage of a television special for the Chilean TV in 1979 promoting their performance at the Viña Del Mar International Song Festival proves the opposite. Furthermore, in 1980 The Hues Corporation released one last single in the US and a sixth album in at least New Zealand, Argentina and South Africa. With the renewed popularity of Disco music in the 1990s, Bernard St Clair Lee revived the group and recruited Bruce Glover and Elaine Woodard as the new members. The group reunited for tour dates and special events, including the PBS Special "Get Down Tonight: The Disco Explosion". Miscellaneous Notes 🗃: Karl Russell was replaced by Fleming Williams who sang the male lead part on the group's single: "Rock The Boat". Fleming Williams left the group not long after the song's recording. Fleming Williams was initially replaced by Tommy Brown. In an interview with Gary James, St Clair Lee said that after some time Fleming Williams was brought back into the group and in turn replaced Tommy Brown. Around 1975, Karl Russell rejoined the group taking over the role of lead singer after Fleming Williams had left the group for good. Around 1979, Kenny James took over as lead singer from Karl Russell. Kenny James can be seen in the Chilean TV-footage from 1979 promoting their performance at the Viña Del Mar International Song Festival and is also shown on the cover of the group's last album: Boogie Me Move Me, from 1980. Hubert Ann Kelley later left the group to become a minister in Los Angeles, California. ****CONTINUE BELOW****

Fun Fact 🕵🏾: Richard Finch of KC & The Sunshine Band told Songfacts that the song: "Rock The Boat", played a partial role in inspiring the his group's song: "Rock Your Baby", which he wrote with Harry Wayne Casey. Richard Finch explained: "Harry and I were also paying attention to the chart actions at clubs, because club records, according to Henry's direction, were doing better than just regular R&B Records. Back then you could sneak into a club and they didn't check your ID, so Harry and I would once in a while go sneak into the local clubs. There was one on Southwest 8th Street in Miami, Florida, that played dance music. We'd go in there for about an hour or two until it got to be way too late for us to be there. And we'd pay attention to what brought the people to the dance floor, and what made them sit down. So we started gearing ourselves to writing more in that direction. 'Rock Your Baby' was inspired by the gathering of all that information".
