For their last world tour in 2019 they chartered a Boeing 747 for lead singer Bruce Dickinson to fly, painted with logo's from the "Book of Souls" tour. The plane was called "Ed Force One". There's a cool photo on line of Ed Force One parked alongside Air Force One. Iron Maiden are best appreciated live, for a band in their late 60s, they still put on one hell of a show.

I'm sure Eddie is explained already. His full name is Edward T. Head. T stands for Theodore, or "The" So he is in fact, Eddie The Head. Originally, on the original Iron Maiden album he was only a head. Also, all the physical creations of him in early era Iron Maiden, they could only make the head, and parade it around, either on a stick, or as a mask by a roadie. So that's how he got his name. The original artwork was by Derek Riggs, probably my all time favourite artist. He did all the Iron Maiden art up to the album "No Prayer For The Dying" and its subsequent singles. He was replaced for the Fear Of The Dark album. Derek Riggs has since been employed by other artists for album artwork, such as Gamma Ray and Stratovarius, which made me very happy back in the day. Because of Eddie T Head, other bands have also been inspired to keep thematic with their album artwork, and employ a mascot. One such would be "Vic" by Megadeth.

"Eddie" started off as a just a head an unknown patron painted on the wall because that's the sort of thing one did in dingy rock clubs back in the day. If you say "head" with a particular English accent, it sounds like "Ed". "Ed" is short for "Eddie", so "Ed the 'ead (or Ed the head)". The band adopted it as their mascot, and gave him more of a "typical rocker" body of the day - skinny/malnourished, bad hair, blank stare, hollow eyes, bad teeth, etc. All the hallmarks of the late 70s London Punk Rock scene. The character has been on the cover of every album, presented in a theme that was indicative of the album title. The band was a target of the "Satanic Panic" of the 1980s, because for some reason people didn't actually read lyrics or put any effort into interpreting album cover imagery, they just heard "666" and grabbed their pitchforks and torches.

That's actually not true. Watch the documentary...the artist who came up with Eddie is in it and stated very clearly, he was inspired by a face painted on the side of a tank.

I have been into Iron Maiden since 1979 and have seen them live in multiple countries and multiple times on every tour since the Piece of Mind tour 1983. I love seeing people react to Maiden from 40 years ago and then seeing there reaction to there latest stuff. There is so many songs you two should check out and the live videos from shows will blow your mind. If you really interested, look up the history of Eddie and what the character has done over time. My suggestions "Hallowed be thy name" "The Trooper" "Aces High" "Wasted Years" "Fear of the Dark" "Rime of the Acient Mariner" "The Clansman" I could go on and on but check out live concerts with these how they get the entire crowd involved and the energy not to mention the stoies and history of what all there songs relate to. Enjoy and Up The Irons!

Eddie started out as this featureless face that they'd hang behind the drums with their logo. I think it would ooze blood from its mouth too. At first he was called "the head" but with their cockney accents, he became "the 'ead" which led to "Eddie the 'ead" and finally settled on "Eddie". He's been a staple ever since.

Here is your info dump I've been listening to Iron Maiden since 1982, at the age of 15. Probably the biggest heavy metal band from Britain, along with Judas Priest. Eddie first appears as a shadow-faced figure on Iron Maiden’s “Running Free” single and was placed into proper view for the first time by visual artist Derek Riggs, who fashioned Eddie as a punk-edged rocker on the band’s 1980 self-titled debut. At the band’s request, Riggs added more hair to the original piece of art to fit more in line with Maiden’s style and image. Riggs originally conceived the drawing for use for a punk album, inspired by an image of a Japanese soldier's head on U.S. tank. Iron Maiden current are: Bruce Dickinson - Vocals Born: August 7, 1958 (age 64 years) Started with Iron Maiden in 1981, left in 1993 and rejoined in 1999 and present singer Steve Harris - Bassist and Founder Born: March 12, 1956 (age 67 years), Started the band in 1975 and has never left Dave Murray - Guitarist Born: December 23, 1956 (age 66 years), 1976-1977, 1978- present Adrian Smith - Guitarist Born: February 27, 1957 (age 66 years), 1980-1990, 1999-present Janick Gers - Guiarist Born: January 27, 1957 (age 66 years), 1990 - present Nicko McBrain - Drums Born: June 5, 1952 (age 71 years), 1982 - present The next songs I'd recommend, in no particular order, when you do Iron Maiden again, are: Hallowed Be Thy Name - Beast over Hammersmith version Phantom of the Opera Live at the Rainbow Where Eagles Dare (Live At Ullevi, Sweden) The Longest Day (about D-Day) Revelations (lyric video) The Clansman - (Rock In Rio 2001) Dance Of Death - En Vivo! as well as any of the ones listed below. Of course there are other songs others will recommend, but since this is my list, this is the ones I recommend. One reactor on KZbin I helped through his "Maiden Voyage" as we called it, he ended up doing all the songs on their 17 studio albums and most of their cover songs. Now his favorite band. Highlight of songs and what they are about that I'd recommend are: From Iron Maiden album------ Phantom of the Opera - A must for live version Strange World (this one will be totally different Iron Maiden) From Killers album------ Murders in the Rue Morgue (Very loosely influenced by Edgar Allen Poe's short story, a story of a fugitive being sought for murder) Genghis Khan (an instrumental - perfect for air drumming) Innocent Exile (continues the theme of Murders in the Rue Morgue of an unjustly accused fugitive) Killers (A journey into the twisted mind of a deranged killer) Prodigal Son(about a repentant man reminiscent of the prodigal son parable found in Luke 15 of the bible) Purgatory(lyrics of song read like a poem) Drifter (focuses on the possibility of new beginnings) From The Number of the Beast album ------ Invaders (It graphically depicts the violence and horror of a defense against a Viking invasion) The Prisoner (based on the UK television series that ran briefly in the late 1960’s) 22 Acacia Avenue (The continuation of Charlotte the Harlot) The Number of the Beast (Inspired by a dream Bassist Steve Harris had after watching the movie the Omen2) Run to the Hills (about the European arrival in America told from the perspective of both the oppressed Cree and the invading white soldiers) Hallowed be Thy Name (about a man who is about to be put to death and what he goes through) From Piece of Mind album ------ Where Eagles Dare (based on an Alistair Maclean novel, (1967), and film (1968) about a WWII rescue of an American general from a Nazi stronghold in the Bavarian Alps Revelations (Starts with the Hymnal from Oh God of Earth and Alter, the next two verses on the Hindu philosophy, the third verse in Yoga a snake called Kundalini that lives at the base of your spinal cord, during meditation a spiritual entity is created symbolizing the transcendental union with God) Flight of Icarus (loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Icarus) The Trooper (based on the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava 1854,which took place during the Crimean War) To Tame a Land (the song relays the story of Paul Atreides, Paul Muad'Dib, from the book Dune by Frank Herbert) From Powerslave album ------ Aces High (about aircraft dog fighting between the British and German fighter pilots of WWII) 2 Minutes to Midnight - About the Doomsday clock for the End of the World Back in The Village (The continuation of the song The Prisoner) Powerslave (about an arrogant pharaoh in his dying hours, he can't understand why he's about to die and fights it in vain) Rime of the Ancient Mariner - (From the poem of the same name by Samuel Taylor Coleridge (story about about an ocean voyage) From Somewhere in Time album------- Wasted Years (A song about the admonition to appreciate the present and not to take things for granted) The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (based on a short story of Alan Sillitoe which was made into a 1962 film Alexander the Great (About the story of Alexander the Great From 7th Son of a 7th Son album (a concept album)------ Infinite Dreams (Detailing someone who is tormented by paranormal dreams and nightmares) The Evil That Men Do (Title taken from a quote in Shakespeare Julius Caesar but the song is unrelated) The Clairvoyant (relates the reflections of the 7th Son of the 7th Son on his life and his powers) From Fear of the Dark album------ Wasting Love (About the emptiness of relationships without love. Another Maiden ballad) Fear of the Dark (About being afraid of the dark and the things in the dark that might be there - absolute a live performance for this one) From Brave New World album------ The Wicker Man (about the apathy of our modern society and our egotistic disinterest of what is happening until something happens to us) Ghost of the Navigator (The lyrics are a metaphor of life, with the ship sailing west towards the setting sun representing death) Brave New World (Loosely based on the 1932 novel by Aldous Huxley) Dream of Mirrors (Yet another song about reoccurring and maybe premonitory dreams) Out of the Silent Planet (Supposedly inspired by the 1956 science -fiction film Forbidden Planet) From Dance of Death album------ No More Lies (The lyrics deal with someone knows his time has come with the possibility of reincarnation) Dance of Death (Orinally inspired by Ingmar Bergman's 1957 film The Seventh Seal - Another one to do as a live performance) Paschendale (about the Battle of Passchendaele during WWI) From A Matter of Life and Death------ Brighter than a Thousand Suns (About the dawn of the nuclear bomb age) The Longest Day (about the WWII Normandy Invasion) Out of the Shadows (About being born)

When maiden started out they had a backdrop of a face at their gigs. It was named "eddie the head" after an old joke: " eddie was born with just a head...nothing else. He spent his life on his parents shelf above the fireplace. On his 18th birthday...his parents wanted to give him something special...so they saved and saved to take him abroad for the first time. On his birthday, his parents teased him about his present..." youll love it"...they said "its unique" they teased...."oh great" said eddie "not another bloody hat!" I didnt say it was good...lol Anyway the name stuck...and when Derek Riggs (the artist behind the first few iron maiden album sleeves) incorporated "the face" into his artwork...the fans called him Eddie.

Iron Maiden, formed in 1975 and still touring and selling out everywhere they go. Absolutely huge in South America and Europe. Alot of their music is historically based. The character of Eddie started out as a thing that hung over the drummer and during the show would ooze blood out of his mouth. Back then he was known as Eddie The Head. Then he evolved into what he is now. The band purchased their own big private jet and it is called Edd Force One. Up until he turned 65, lead singer Bruce Dickinson was the pilot of said jet. Dive deeper into their catalog and you will understand why I say "Iron Maiden, educating you and kicking your ass for 48 years". 9:07

Wow, you've never heard that song before and you've heard Iron Maiden??? This is probably their most recognizable song. I can't blame you though if you grew up outside of the US. I was pretty young when this song came out, but I heard it through my older brother (5 years older). He was born in 1965 and was a wild child. Starting in his early teens he went to all of the great rock band concerts. He bought all of the concert shirts and later on in life he put them up on ebay. He made SO MUCH MONEY from those shirts. He had a lot of Japanese buyers paying $200 or more for well-worn 70s and 80s concert shirts. Oh well, keep up the great work and I'll keep watching.

A few trivia tid bits for you: 1.The Female dancer was Billy Idol's Girlfriend at the time. 2. This video came out in 1982 in the very early days of music videos so making them had not become an 'art' yet but for 1982 and to the kids of that day watching MTV it was all new and scary. MTV got some complaints on this video for being too scary. 3. Do Iron Maiden's-Wasted Years next it came out in 1986 when music videos were more of a thing and the band had become a household name at that point. You will see a major difference in video quality. And Eddie Variations :D

quality reaction for sure! This is a great song by one of the best metal bands of all time. Die with your boots on and the rhyme of the ancient mariner are also excellent. I would say though, that what they're singing about is no joke, and throwing around the number of the devil and singing about him is very much a form of worship. Whether these guys actually think they are doing the devil's work or not it's definitely not advisable.

The character of "Eddie" was based on a painting found on the nose of an English or American bomber from WWII. The artist that has been doing their album covers since the beginning, altered it slightly for the theme of each album released.

Also the Godzilla thing is most likely a reference to a passage in Revelation about a dragon coming out of the sea. Godzilla fits that verse very well. Any fundie back then who watched this video would make the connection right away.

One of their best tours was the "Live After Death" tour , the use of Eddie the 'ead Iron Maidens mascot was something else. This tour was only 4 years after number of beast tour, but their stage set up went from a very basic one to "Spectacular" in those few year's and still is. I believe they spend about a million pounds on the stage set up nowadays. Bruce the singer flies the band and equipment in their 747 jumbo jet, yep it's not basic anymore 😂

From what I understand, Edward T. Harris, aka Eddie the Head, was a cover painting from their first album, a tribute to bassist Steve Harris' late brother.

Well, a prototype version of the character was around as early as 1976, designed by their then roadie Dave Lights. The version in the first album cover, that became famous, was a slight reworking of a previous painting by artist Derek Riggs, who was to do all their artwork until 1991. By then, he'd had enough.

According to past interviews, this song isn't actually about Satan-worshipping as many religious tended to take it but was just based on a nightmare Steve Harris (who wrote the song) had after watching Damian: Omen 2. The funny part is this is very similar to how Black Sabbath came to be Black Sabbath ... they watched a classic Boris Karloff movie (called Black Sabbath) taking the movies name as their own band name as well as the name of both their first album and it's title track. Oh, and as for Godzilla, etc: with this being the bands third album (first with lead singer Bruce Dickinson) they of course had many budgetary constraints so they used all clips from classic public domain (copyright free) horror movies. Godzilla meets the Smog Monster, Monster Maker, The Crimson Ghost (chapter serial) and I was a Teenage Werewolf are among the clips. The other videos from this album also used public domain movie footage ... Run to the Hills used footage from silent films and The Trooper used footage from The Charge of the Light Brigade. They'd come back on later videos doing the same including Aces High which used classic WW2 fighter pilot footage.

Don't know if this was said, but he's called Eddie cuz it was a pun. They had this disembodied head on stage (which was like a mannequin head) that spat fake blood, thanks to a fish tank pump in back. He was called "Eddie the 'Ead". Brits with their kinds of accents were known for dropping their h's, which is funny cuz Brits say "herbs" with a hard h. Anyway, the name stuck as Eddie, the disembodied head, became re-embodied and then grew to ten feet.

Also, the song is from a dream the bass player Steve Harris had after watching Omen2. The character in the song is attributed to the Character in the poem Tam 'o Shanter. Which is about a man losing his mind and becoming schizophrenic.
