James dad, had 4 stage kidney failure and they couldn’t find a kidney …. So James wrote this to his dad as a goodbye in a sense…. After this came out, a distant relative came forward and was a match 🙏❤️🙏 This is his father inn the video ❤️ I think his father is doing ok to day. Lovely reaction 👍❤️👍🦋🦋🦋

Cant believe people don't get it ... a rough past between them... a duh ... make peace so his soul can go on easy to the next level easier, w/o regret/anguish between the past. How can people even question this lyrical depth? What complete idiots some of you are. Google it, and wake up. Then Google empathy cause all these next generations have lost ALL of it. I heard that since both were in the military, every time one or the other went on a mission, they said to each other, “I’m not your son, you’re not my father we’re just two grown men saying goodbye.” I was touching and poetic to add it to this dedication song when he thought his dad was dying.

Yeah that part is true it was one take and when I first watched it it was again me bawling my eyes out and I had both my parents watch it and both of them also followed their eyes out I knew they would they both lost their fathers my dad is lost both of his parents and my mom just has her mother laughed and saw that song has such a amazing meaning I’m crying texting this out because I’m thinking about it and thinking about my grandparents and my grandfathers!!

I could be totally “off beam” but the way I interpret the “I’m not your son. You’re not my father. We’re just two grown men saying goodbye” line, is that they are now equals, seeing each other one eye level, rather than one or the other being in a more dominant role (as a father would normally have).

Yes! And in a sense, the son, has taken the fathers position. Like life tends to do. Father use to put his son to bed. And chase the monsters away. Protecting his son. Now, son has to take that position. Putting daddy to bed for the last time. And hoping his dad will “ sleep” peacefully. And not be afraid of dying. The son will chase the monsters away. And, I also see it as, they are beyond just father and son. Best friends. Or even, a relationship that there is no known label to describe. Yet, he calls him Daddy. Such a talented writer. Such a wonderful song.

I read somewhere that the I'm not your son,you're not my father is something that they said to each other when they deployed. It was their way of saying goodbye it was a personal meaning to them.

Both Blunt and his father served in the military and when James's was sent to Kosovo it has been reported that when his father said goodbye, his dad said "you are not my son and I am not your father, we are just two grown men saying goodbye ".

His dad had stage 4 kidney cancer, they couldn't find a donor, so he wrote this to his dad (yes this is his dad in the video) after this song released a distant relative came forward and was a match and as of 2019 his dad was doing good. James donated the money from this song to a charity for ex service men and women as James was a military man himself.

It was stage four kidney disease, not cancer. His father only had one kidney since he had been a living donor years ago. His remaining kidney was only functioning at 11% and due to his age, he wasn't a high priority patient because donor organs go to the youngest people first. James and his sister both offered to give him a kidney, but they weren't a match, and the doctors said it was unlikely he'd find a donor in time to save him. However, because of this song, his father's cousin became aware of the situation and donated a kidney.

I heard that James donated every penny of the money this song made to the UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do so much outstanding work to help British ex-servicemen & service women. God bless him for that.

I absolutely love the reaction videos to this song. The humanity driven through Blunts word and note choice brings you right beside him in his pain. We feel alongside with him. I, too, have fixated on the I’m not your son you’re not my father line… I agree with many of the thoughts others have put out there, but I would add that he is saying it isn’t a father son relationship where the father has authority over his child… in fact the song beautifully just the transition of the father being the care taker, to needing to be cared for. But even so the lyric says we are just two men saying goodbye… he is honoring his father despite the roles of authority reversing…. But then moments later he calls him Daddy… something usually only small children say when they are most reliant on their parents… I think this beautifully shows the struggle of needing to step up and care, but at the same time feeling like Daddy has so much more for you to learn… so many more conversations, life lessons…. Watch the video again…. Don’t stop until it is completely out of time. You will see at the very end of the shot, Daddy Blunt reaches over and pats James on the arm in comfort. Furthering this imagery that even though he is the one dying, in need of care… his heart is to care for his son.

It may be helpful to understand that his father was a senior officer in the British army and James was a Captain in the same guards regiment so their relationship was not only father and son but also junior officer to senior officer, this is why he says "I'm not your son" (but also a brother officer) and death is a fact of life in the military (British stiff upper lip , show no emotion) so James has always found himself in an odd relationship with his father.

It's not very often you get to hear your Eulogy delivered by your children while you are alive.... Being a Dad is often such a thankless job! I didn't have one myself, but I am the father of four, and I bawl every time I hear this song...

The lines “I’m not your son, you’re not my father ..” washes away all the baggage of a father/son relationship. “I know your mistakes, you know mine..” means no need to hash over the past, the time has gone for that. The father is dying, let him go in peace.

To me, it is about how relationships don't matter when everything is on the line, it is two grown men having an opportunity to say goodbye without any chain of command, any seniority, just human beings who love each other grasping at the last straws of time together and the emotion that 50 years of cultivation gives them coming to this point. I am humbled by the emotion and the strength that this song must have taken to perform in front of his father.

James wanted this to be 100% real and authentic. This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually fine a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. I don't know how James managed to keep himself together so well, but it was so damn powerful and obviously deeply emotional for him.

I lost my dad 3wks ago. May 4th 2023 n my Mama passed in Aug 2022 so its a double hitter for me an this song got me, by the end I was bawling so hard. Condolences to you an ur family.

He’s saying even though they’re father and son, it’s bigger than that. It’s two grown men with a history together saying their goodbyes. I’m a guy and I break down hearing this every time. Reminds me of my own dad and his dying experience but James’s voice here and his emotion are just raw emotion. Great reactions!

James and his father were army men James father was high up in the military. James took the line from his father's words when James was going to Kosovo the line was his father s statement when James was going to war. James reflected on his father s illness stage 4 kidney failure when he thought he was dying. Fortunately a cousin matched and donated a kidney.

He’s one of the most emotional singers I’ve heard! My dad was very abusive, and my youngest brother ( I’m the oldest and only girl) had a long discussion about loving a monster. You have to watch the Seahawks so I can subscribe 😂

Hello 👋 Great video, 👍👍 My personal interpretation of the ‘I’m not your Son, your not my Father’ is how he basically explains it, his father is dying and the respect they have for each other as the men they are and knowing each loves the other deeply means the past has no place in this moment, ‘no need to forgive, no need to forget’ it is just a time to say goodbye. I think it has a double meaning: The first meaning is what you said - that he'll be with him until the end. The other meaning I take from this is that he is reassuring his Dad that he will be ok and continue to make his father proud after his father is gone (I will be the last one), and carry on his legacy (so I'll leave a light on. Let there be no darkness in your heart).

"Your not my father, I'm not your son" is not literal, it's kinda like saying I Don't love you out of obligation I love you as the man you are and relation has nothing to do with my love for you. There are most likely better ways to explain what if mean than that but you catch my Drift.

I think as you grow up perspectives change. The roles blur and change. Parents and children both grow up at some point and can meet as adults. And at some point the relationship turns again and the child becomes the caring part. I think it is very respectful to say that as an adult you are on an equal footing with your parents. You are no longer a child and a parent. That's how it was between my mother and me in the end. I lost her last year. Shortly thereafter I found the video Monsters and first of all I cried a lot. I like this song a lot, even if it makes me cry again and again.

Hi By your reaction to James Blunt Monsters You will enjoy Justin Crum singing CREEP. It is on America got talent 2016. (You need to rewind a bit to before he sings and judges ask his age etc) so you can hear why he sings that song. Children can be very cruel!

It's pretty clear that in the moment close to death being father and son is not the important thing - two grown men are saying goodbye with all that has gone between them as father and son. There is a role reversal here - dad used to look after his son, chase the monsters away, try to keep his son safe and now the son is doing the same in the moments his father is passing from this life - don't be afraid, I'll keep the light on and I'll chase your monsters away. And while you're away, I'll be a good person and make you proud. This was based on James's experience with his father featured here in the video when it seemed his father would die of kidney disease. Fortunately, his father managed to find a donor received a transplant.

You are correct and he says you’re not a father I am not your son he is saying that in a way it’s time to forget about labels let’s just enjoy each other in the little time amount we have left, his dad was dying A kidney failure and you need a kidney yeah and if I want to be not mistaken James actually gave him a kidney but don’t quote me on that one, and he was already making the song and everything so he decided on a different approach with the music video and I think it ending they changed a little bit but I don’t think by much because I still like even though you’re you’re fine now we still need to live life to the fullest!

Both James blunton and his father are Hi ranking in the military so they were like stiff upper lip his father was a colonel he himself was a captain he himself actually prevented World War 3. And I think the term of like I'm not your father I'm not your son we're just too grown mint and saying goodbye but then in the He referts to being a little boy saying daddy and I think it also is kind of like it speaks Of the emotions you go through when a loved one is passing trying to be brave for them trying to be tough but at the same time the death of a parent brings you back to being their baby

James was potentially responsible for preventing WW3 during the Kosovo conflict. As the 1st officer to arrive at an airport he refused a order from an American officer to take the airport which was occupied by the Russian army.
