John Mayer made the comment (and its often quoted regarding Jason Isbell's song writing prowess) - "Jason Isbell is the best lyric writer of my generation. He lives at a level where even great writers can only visit." He's 100% correct! Simply amazing musician and writer. And the slide guitar on this song is no joke. When Jason is home in Nashville and available he lends his slide guitar talents in the recording studio to friends and producers on a regular basis. He's a very well respected guitarist.
@dannyberry8725 Жыл бұрын
Sadler Vaden does the slide on this. Both he and Jason are incredible and under-rated guitar players. The whole damn band is under-rated. They are one of, if not the best live acts around.
@timdore1131 Жыл бұрын
Sadler isn’t with the band quite yet when this was recorded. That’s Jason doing a lion share of all the guitar work on this album. The only two members of the 400 unit on this album are Chad (drums) and Derry (keys). Even his best bud Jimbo is missing from this one.
@FUBAR19862 жыл бұрын
This song and the way he sings it is like that part in the middle of a movie where the character is contemplating life choices…… I don’t care what style of music it is when the singer puts that much emotion into it. Pure gold.

Just took a couple weeks vacation and followed him and the band around northern Europe. Six shows, all general admission, stand right up front for under 40 bucks. The most beautiful venues. Crowd knew every word to every song. Always applauded each time he hit the line about swearing off alcohol forever this time. Drummer came in with some haunting beats as the crescendo grew each night. So special and absolutely unforgettable.

What you guys are talking about is a slide guitar. It is basically just an electric guitar played with a slide (cylinder) over one finger/ The sound is a lot like a steel guitar, since you get the entire range of sound, with the slide acting like a fret.

Cast Iron Skillet... Given how upbeat and "simple" the melody is, It's easy to miss how much emotional depth there is in every line. He references southern/rural sensibility that carries layers of subtext. It - like so much of Isbell's work - is pure genius. I've listened to it hundreds of time, and I get choked up every time.
