I like how he wrote it about HIS experience and feeling rather than trying to tell others how to feel.

If I had to categorize Isbell, I’d say Americana. Brandi Carlile, Lucinda Williams, John Prine. Acoustic roots music. My opinion only. 💜💜💜

The music industry has categorized Jason as "Americana" as he's won several Grammys in this category. But I wholly disagree that his music should be labeled as such. I feel the Country label has been hijacked by the industry and they are now fiercely protective of its own bastardization of the once proud, specific and obvious musical genre. Country music is George Jones, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams Jr.... Americana is John Cougar, Earle, Prince, Cash... IMHO Jason sounds a lot more traditional country than Americana....and today's "country" is pure shite.

@@pluckinmageetar Good book to read “Major Labels”. Discusses musical genres, how they developed & the tribalism encouraged. I love country music, and again “for me”, hear Americana as a subset of the broad term ‘country’. So many times I’ve heard, I hate country (Chicago native). Just tells me they have been manipulated by the labels. Country has been The Carters, Glen Campbell, Alison Krauss, Shania Twain, Waylon Jennings & Breland who (to me), are all different but still Country. Never one obvious sound. As history has shown, musical genres will continue to evolve & grow. People just need to be willing to listen & not use “genres” to close themselves off from discovering them.

His ex-wife (recent divorce, sadly), the violinist, Amanda, as he referenced that 'Momma' wanting to change the Nashville sound. Perfect lyric in that Jason's always spoke ill of the Nashville "Mafia", the powers there who basically control what gets on country radio and what gets discarded. He's never been a slave to it. Yet, his Grammy awards keep piling up. F*&^ck Nashville, basically. You must catch Elephant, Children of Children (his autobiographical track), Cover Me Up, St. Peter's Autograph, Travelling Alone. And on and on. Be well. /M.

Jason can write a song. Elephant. Some artists can't be put in genres. Some artists have their own sound.
