I knew the first time I heard this song that it was destined to be a cross-generational classic, and about 2 months ago that feeling was vindicated in a big way when my mother - whose musical tastes don't stray far beyond Elvis, Patsy Cline, and other musicians of the 50's-early 60's, and who is HIGHLY resistant to new experiences - couldn't stop playing it over and over after I introduced her to it, all the while finding out everything she could about the man and the tragedy that took him from us. RIP Jeff, the world is better for you having graced it with your talent. Many ppl say it and I can't disagree; the line "she's a tear that hangs inside my soul forever" is a lyrical gut-punch that will never not hurt like hell.

This song shattered me for reasons unknown to me when I was 12 when I heard this. I guess because my soul, deep down, knew it was going to experience this pain one day. This is a heartbreak anthem forever. Jeff… up there my brother… know we still love you. I never met you… but till we meet again you beautiful sorrowful soul.

It was a big loss when he tragically drown in the Mississippi River in a freak twist of fate. I think he was to good to live in this shitty time when humanity is so cruel to each other. He had an amazing soul.

After Grace, a second studio LP exists called My Sweetheart the Drunk, alongside a disc called Sketches For... MSTD, demos which JB had made to replace the recorded album, which he wasn't completely happy with. Needless to say it's a great record, with ten contrasting tracks all featuring that voice. Morning Theft, an understated solo performance, is my favourite but that's my heart not my brain talking. Your channel is a breath of fresh air. God Bless.

@@retroreactions.... The two disc set, Sketches For My Sweetheart the Drunk, consisted of a Tom Verlaine produced studio album and a collection of rough four track demos. Back in 94/95, Genesis had lost whatever street cred they had, so imagine the shock at seeing a demo version of "Back in NYC" by Jeff Buckley! . Two factors why MSTD doesn't get consistent attention: Firstly, the demos are very rough, so releasing them shows the depth of grief and shock that many people experienced at the time, who longed for further studio recordings. Secondly, Jeff Buckley wasn't intending on releasing the Tom Verlaine- produced Sweetheart, so after his death, his mother and his band had to juggle how to honour the Jeff Buckley legacy, hence the compromise. Everyone Here Thought They Needed Him after all. Snow wonder the digital world of 21st century wireless streaming can't deal with it. "The Sky is a Landfill" after all. Brandon, I've resisted from commenting for six months. You now know why. I do go on! 🤗 Take care now.

What a beautiful song! I’m not familiar with Jeff Buckley, but definitely will listen to more from him. It’s tragic that he died so young, with such a promising future. 😢 This reminds me a little of Yavuz Cetin, who tragically drowned at the age of 30, after only one album released with a second on the way. Yavuz ended his life by jumping off of Istanbuls’ Bogazici Bridge which connects Europe to Asia. Again, another loss to such a promising future.

@jphoenixfan Leonard actually said he preferred Jeff's version ❤ With 'Famous Blue Raincoat' I actually prefer Jennifer Warnes version. But to listen to them both on a track, try the duet of Cohens 'Joan of Arc' - so beautiful. Or for Cohen on his own, maybe 'First We'll Take Manhattan' or 'Everybody Knows'

Truly, the man had it all: Once-in-a-generation musical talent, the sort that allowed him to pick up a foreign instrument and make it sound good immediately, the looks and charisma that - as soon as he entered a room - made everyone in it want something from him. The ability to write haunting, achingly beautiful music that will live on forever - and breathtaking poetry to go with it. And, of course, that transcendent, supernatural voice, that made time stand still - and that made everyone shut up and take notice. One that spoke directly to your soul, bypassing all intellect. One that, as you say, allows you to feel what he was feeling. The thing is he struggled quite a bit with writing his songs - they took their sweet time to form and become finalised. (A contributing reason to the start and stop and restart of the production of the followup). Which speaks to how serious he was about them, and the level of quality control he put himself through. And the album Grace confirms the suspicion. It contains three covers, a practise that felt very anachronistic at the time, when all artists wrote everything themselves and rarely recorded covers for no particular reason. Because why add an unfinished filler when there are so many existing beautiful songs to choose from? They were all from the set lists from his days as a ”human jukebox” at those New York coffee shops, but you got a feeling they just happened to be what he felt like doing on the day. For me his death is one of the greatest tragedies in music history, precisely because it happened so early in his career. (A John Lennon got to have a full career before he was taken from us). There’s no telling what he would have done. All we know is his label Columbia considered him one of their ”legacy artists” - one that goes on to create a life’s work under their roof, like a Dylan or a Springsteen, in spite of the fact that they never had a clue what he was going to, not even on his debut album. (They even released an EP of him live at one of those NY cafés, just to get him started, to expose him to the world while he figured out what he wanted to do). The posthumous followup is an uneven affair, unsurprisingly considering it was far from finished. While some of the songs are truly remarkable, there’s nothing there that touches the Grace album. Because they weren’t finished going through the meat grinder that was his quality control. And some (notably some of his closest allies, like his manager) regarded it poor taste to release unfinished work without his permission. But his mother, (his sole heir), has proven willing if not eager to present to the world everything he ever produced, including notes and diaries. And most fans naturally welcome it. Someone, I forget who, once said the mark of a genius is everything before you has now become obsolete, and everything after you bears your mark. Eddie Van Halen is an oft cited example of the sentiment. The rock era itself didn't live on many years beyond the industry crash caused by filesharing. But for the years that it did remain, that description was certainly true of Jeff Buckley. He didn't sell an amount of records in his lifetime that suggested it, but the impact he had on other artists is immeasurable. For example, if you listen through Radiohead's discography, you clearly hear a before and an after Thom Yorke heard Jeff live. (And Thom is the first to admit it). There are a few documentaries, notably one BBC made called ”Everyone Here Wants You”, that are essential for every fan. And I warmly recommend his manager Dave Lory’s loving portrait of him, ”From Hallelujah to the Last Goodbye”, co-written with Jim Irvin. Lastly I must recommend the most beautiful tribute to the man I ever heard: Duncan Sheik’s Buckley-esque ”A Body Goes Down”. It’s almost as beautiful as the man it tributes.
