Wonderful song by a wonderful singer. People today seem to want to hear a lot of vocal gymnastics. Jewel can do them, but her voice is so beautiful and well-controlled that she doesn't need to do that to be extraordinary. I basically love everything she's ever done. I'm so glad you appreciate her.

There are actually two recorded versions of this song (excluding live and alternate takes, etc.) This version was the single version, which became popular on the radio. The other version was on her debut album. There are subtle differences between them. I absolutely love Jewel’s music.

Foolish Games is stunning, and her voice and style of singing is soo unique too. I have not heard anyone sing somewhat like her. You Were Meant For Me might be even better then Foolish Games for me,and then im not smacktalking this song at ALL,i very much love this song. Its just that way with Jewel, she has so many amazing songs,it gets difficult to choose one favourite before she hits you with a better one.

Saturday 21 January 2023. First time I watch your reaction for Jewel this song. I think you both hit the nail on the head. First time I've heard her voice compared to an instrument. That is 100 and 10% spot-on perfect. I don't know if you have seen Jewel go undercover karaoke? But whenever I want to get really crank up with Jewel, I Google it. Jewel goes undercover karaoke. The people in the little clubhouse don't know it is her the people behind the show fix her up so she doesn't even look like herself. Must see!

Ran into her in the late 80's in it was Berkeley I believe? She was a busker. There were a lot of little homeless hippie girls with their guitars, hustling the American dream for a little change in a cup for songs. She obviously wasn't the Jewel persona that everyone knows yet. There was a whole little group of people she was kinda hanging out with, and I might have said maybe 10 words to her? She seemed shy to talk to,but flipped a switch when she performed. I grew up in Pennsylvania, graduated school and wanted to check California out. And actually ran into a few famous people when I was there. Carnie Phillips in Receda, actually partied with Jennie Garth in a hotel room when the 90210 show was big. But the cops came and broke up the party. Lol. Went to the People's park at the foot of the Golden gate bridge, and there was a free music festival... early incarnations of Alice in chains and Nirvana were playing there, but this was 5 years before the grunge thing happened. In LA, I was driving up the sunset strip, and a drunken Tommy Lee fell off his platform boots and off the sidewalk right in front of my Chevelle, and I almost ran him over😂. I remember calling him a few derogatory things that called his sexuality into question, and he threw his beer bottle at my car,and fell down again, lol. I got a place right across the street from Cheech Marin's first wife Rikki. Next door on one side,Sharon Gless of the show Cagney and Lacey lived there, and on the other was a Raiderette, who was about 6'3" and blonde as a person could possibly be. It was a fun time and place to come of age. The glam rock scene was in full swing and grunge was in it's infancy stages. Berkeley where I met Jewel was like a time warp. Walking straight back into 1968 and the summer of love. Even the lawyers had ponytails and wore bell bottoms. You could see she had talent, but a lot of the buskers did. I would be lying if I said in that moment I knew she'd be famous in less than 2 years. People were walking by her singing cover songs on her acoustic...some threw change in her cup, some paid no nevermind. I remember kissing one of her girl friends after a slice of pizza, and not realizing the culture difference between Pennsylvania and California, she said something about my eating meat because of the pepperoni. I remember arguing against it being meat because nobody ever saw a pepperoni running around breathing 😂. That particular girl I'm speaking about, had a little guitar as well, and was every bit the performer Jewel was at the time. I remember asking for jamming a lick on her guitar as a guitar player myself, and played Led Zeppelin's The Rain song for them, and showing them the weird DGCGCD tuning Jimmy Page used for that song. As I was playing, someone walked up and threw a $50 in their cup,and they both looked at it,and then looked at me,and I told them to keep it. I wasn't homeless or needed money or anything. They thanked me and took off, I suspected to buy drugs or food or something, and I never saw them again. Like I said earlier, after that I went to LA,did the band thing there, played with some great musicians...was in a few popular bands long enough to have a cup of coffee...and was watching MTV one day and saw Jewel, and was like:no sh*t! Good for her! Most of the group of people she hung with are probably dead now. The times were wild, and they were all a little crazy. I hung around until the grunge thing was wrapping up, and moved back east to a normal life. Wouldn't trade any of it for the world. Occasionally I still run into some of the people from the bands I sat in with as a session player,or worked with as a member, and it's nice to catch up at the NAMM festival and such. It'd be nice to chat Jewel up just to see how she's doing?

There's this one video of Jewel doing this song live. I'm glad you didn't choose that one 'cause then instead of sitting here, hitching breaths and near tears, I'd be a sobbing fucking mess on the floor, and useless for the rest of the afternoon. I have a theory about Jewel and Amy Lee and Shuhada' Sadaqat (Sinéad O'Connor), and that heart-wrenching tone Asia was talking about. I describe it as 'brassy' because 'muppetty' is not respectful. It's not respectful, but it _is_ the tone. That Kermit the Frog impression is how you start going for it, and with expertly mastered moderation and practice, what you get to is a flexing of the throat musculature just behind the tongue but just above the larynx that opens that space a bit, and lends a resonance to the voice that, when done correctly, trumpets out like _defiance,_ and when less expertly handled, is kind of Shakira, later Danzig, or Kermit the Frog. I'm about 40% certain I've got this wrong, but if this mental exercise _(these foolish games)_ can hold off the tears long enough for the emotions to settle, I might be okay for a minute.
