I was a freshman in High school a junior with a diivers license took me to my first rock concert - this was it - Joan Jett and the Heartbreakers. The 80s were awesome. We had front row too. Unfortunately I really wasn't into girls much yet. But looking back is hard.

Saw an interview with Joan and she was pointing out the hypocrisy of guys being able to talk/sing about sex and no one gets embarrassed, but a woman even casually references it in a song and people get the vapours. It’s so true and it’s so weird, lol.

This song was a cover of Glam Rocker Gary Glitter. Gary Glitter and Mike Leander wrote the song. It was recorded in 1972. It did not Chart in the US until Joan Jett did her version on her first Solo Album released in 1981. Then as a single in the summer of 1982. This version made it to number 20 on Billboards Hot 100. Joan Jett had been a guitarist in The Runways in the mid-late 1970s before she went solo. The Runaways were an all-female hard rock band put together by producer Kim Fowley in Los Angeles when the girls were all teenagers. Joan liked the punk rock and wanted to The Runaways to go more in that direction. She was active in the Los Angeles underground punk scene after The Runways split around 1980 and she produced the only record from LA punk band The Germs (which featured future Nirvana/Foo FIghters guitarist Pat Smear). That Germs record is a pretty wild album even by today's standards. Then she started doing solo work which in my opinion was actually pretty commercial. But, she's a cool chick, I met her once. Asked her all about working with The Germs, LOL. But my favorite Runaways songs were always the ones she sang lead.

My Lord how Joan Jett paved the way for women to Rock! Back at 15 with The Runaways with Lita Ford…they set out the way for women to rock out! No one wanted to produce her record so she made her own record label and I Love Rock N Roll went to number 1. Bet they felt stupid. She’s so beautiful and tough as hell!!! Love this song so much! It’s a cover but she destroys the original! She doesn’t give a damn what anyone thinks period! Men can throw sex around in every song they have sang for decades. She said oh I’m done putting the word love in place of the word sex. Joan just threw it out to everyone and doesn’t care what you think! That’s why she broke down that wall for women who play rock and roll music!

This was DEFINITELY Punk!!! From her FIRST album "Bad Reputation" another Punk Classic Song!!! The album didn't get popular until her SECOND album was released and went to #1 for 8 weeks in a row "I Love Rock n Roll". After THAT success they RE-released the 2 singles and they went to the top 40 charts! Joan Jett is the Queen of Rock n Roll and Godmother of Punk!!!

Joan Jett started with the Runaways who were one of the first all girl rock bands. Check out Cherry Bomb. She wasn't the lead singer at first, Cherie Currie was. After Cherie left the group Joan became the lead singer. Wasted by the Runaways features Joan on lead vocals.

There's so many singers, composers, actors etc that have been guilty of a wide range of terrible crimes, bad treatment of others, bad attitudes, offensive politics, and so on .. And if I was to no longer listen to their music or watch their films etc, it would take away a huge chunk of the stuff that entertains me and gives me pleasure or relaxation .. So hard as it can often be, I just try to think of the product and not the maker .. But again, I appreciate your viewpoint.
