@@mikeparker7631 It was quite popular, went to #6 in the US and a big hit all over the world. The hook was the melody of "Steppin out, into the night..," played musically and sang.
@Nui.
@Nui. Жыл бұрын
@@mikeparker7631 It clearly does have a hook.... it's the simple motif which is sung and played throughout the chorus. This was a very popular song and definitely unique (some might say groundbreaking in mainstream pop of the time) in regard to the tone and manner of it's synth rhythm backing. Given the fact that it was nominated for male vocal & record of the year Grammys, I'm not sure how that doesn't constitute being popular.
@mikeparker7631
@mikeparker7631 Жыл бұрын
@@abdeton1899 Hey...I love the song...but it has no clear, catchy chorus. The hook you guys mention is subtle and kinda hanging out underneath the rest of the song. Not a criticism but it helps explain reactions like his...and why it wasn't more radio friendly...say what you want in hindsight...at the time it wasn't all that popular.
@abdeton1899

@@mikeparker7631 Yes, I agree. But a hook doesn't have to be in the chorus, necessarily, or even sang. It is just something that repeats and catches the ear in a likeable or memorable way :)

This is just a slick smooth track. Joe Jackson has been a musical hero of mine. I own his entire catalog. This song was the intro and ending song my synth band, Everyone's Debonaire, played at every gig. I think they would definitely respond better to "You Can't Get What You Want, 'Til You Know What You Want," "Breaking Us In Two," "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" and many tracks from his "Jumpin' Jive" album.

The more you listen to this song over years the more it will grow on you. My daughter is 29, close to your ages I think, and she plays many instruments that she taught herself to play since age 10. She says this song is a musical masterpiece because of it’s easy sound but actually it’s quite musically complex. She, as a fellow millennial/gen z, says listen to it more than once. Give it a chance. It will absolutely grow on you!

Same here. The man is genius. While many people compare Billy Joel and Elton John like I do, I actually feel Joe Jackson is a fusion of the two of them. Joe Jackson can change music styles like Billy Joel, and is as prolific a songwriter and composer as Elton John is. As a saxophonist and Jazz guy, his infusion of Jazz elements into his music is why I constantly play and purchase his music.

I guess I don’t see where he was pouting. He said it wasn’t for him and that should be ok. He doesn’t have to like every song they react to. At least he’s honest about it and did not tear the song apart. He also said he would be willing to check out other songs by Joe Jackson so he’s at least open minded about it.

Jay's interpretation of "give the people what they want" is short- sighted. He thinks people tune in to see them reacting to the songs that have been requested. That's not what the people want. The people want to see them enjoying the music that they grew up loving. Nobody, and that means nobody, watches a reaction channel to see the hosts shit on the music they love. He doesn't have to like every song. But find something positive to say and let Amber do what she does. I mean, she is carrying the channel. She picks the songs, gives the best analysis and insight on the songs. He pretty much just reads the scripted parts. If she hadn't joined him, this channel would be dead.

@Mike Harris I don't have a problem with Jay or any other reactor not liking a song. That's more real than people liking everything. Jay didn't bash the song. I think when Jay heard the song was from the '80s he expected the typical '80s music he so loves. He was not expecting something more sophisticated. You're right. This channel wouldn't be a success without Amber. I'm always impressed at how well she analyzes a song on first listen.

Another song that came out around the same time that was huge (radio and MTV) was Duran Duran's "SAVE A PRAYER" I remember both those videos replayed continually on MTV. It's a great listen and another sound experiment that I think both of you will like. Totally unique sound and one of their bests.

His first album “Look Sharp!” has some great bass playing throughout it. “Is She Really Going Out With Him” is the hit from that album but there are plenty of killer tracks. “Sundays Papers”, “Happy Loving Couples”. “Fools in Love” is a cool reggae song. I love this album.

The album this is from, "Night and Day" was deliberately recorded without Guitar. Bass, piano, drum-rhythm, which are essentially a Jazz Combo, are prominent with Joe and his Band. Joe did start as New Wave, but gave that up for Jazz influence of Louis Jordan, Cab Calloway era (album Jumpin' Jive), and Cole Porter (Night and Day title, and the album cover). One of his next album's, "Body and Soul" used an album cover by Sax' man, Sonny Rollins, the pose with the horn, to show where JJ's vibe was from. He did several eclectic albums, like recording entire new songs, Live, and requesting the audience did not clap or cheer,(Big World)...He had a live album, in 2000, with his favorite Bass and Drum men, and Joe on Piano (Summer in the City) with some killer versions of his own songs, and covers of Duke Ellington, The Beatles, and Steely Dan. Joe only did a few videos, he didn't like the MTV game. While I had "Steepin' Out" as a record, or disc since 1982, when I lived/studied in Chicago for 9 years ('94-'02) the song did gain more special meaning, with a Girlfriend. I took Jenny out to meet some friends, at a Bistro, and we had a very good social time, with all. As we were leaving, I could hear Joe's "Steppin' Out" on the eatery's sound, made me smile. We got in a Yellow Taxi, to go back to my apartment. I asked her if she knew the song, she wasn't sure. At my apartment, with a glass of wine each, before "anything else" -I played her this song, which she quickly understood, why it was more special, for us, that night.

This song always takes me back to my early college days. I absolutely love this vibe, and when I hear it I have to just stop and immerse myself in it. Joe Jackson is a super talented musician, and I think his jazz roots really show in this video. You didn't seem to notice that the "simple folk" were enjoying, and dreaming about, what the "rich people" were doing. The maid was imagining herself in the other woman's clothes out dancing with a handsome guy. Joe was a simple guy playing a really nice piano that the other man came home to. I think you will enjoy some of Joe Jackson's other works, and you will be surprised that it is the same guy, when you hear them.
