Awesome reaction to an American folk icon! Not only was he the 38th best- selling music artist of all, he was a leading advocate for environmental causes in the 70s and also portrayed that love of the wilderness and country through his music. He was a huge fan of flying, too. Which caused him an early demise in 1997, as he crashed in his small experimental plane. He was admired all around the world. His song 'The Wings that Fly Us Home' is my favorite, as it's very soulful, prophetic, and in fact played at his funeral.

Just to clarify the song is "Annie's Song." It's a love song he wrote to his first wife Annie, he wrote it in about 10 minutes while on a ski lift in Aspen Colorado - literally a Rocky Mountain high. It's probably been on the music play list at millions of weddings.

Yes, I was coming into the comments to recommend Calypso also! I remember watching the Jacques Cousteau oceanographic specials on tv in the 1970s & all the exploring he would do off his ship the Calypso. So nostalgic.

Rocky Mountain high, Colorado. The state of Colorado contains the majestic and stunning Rocky Mountains, part of the Continental Divide which runs north-south through several states here in the U.S. Btw, I was lucky enough to see him back in his heyday in the 70s when I was young because I was at a Boy Scout camp in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and on the final night, we had a big bonfire and he was a surprise guest. He flew in and suddenly he appeared there around the campfire with his acoustic guitar. We got to hang out and talk with him, and then he would play some of his songs and we would all sing along. It was such a magical moment for a kid. I can still see the firelight reflecting off his glasses.

I love John Denver. I first heard his music listening to an 8-track in my dad's truck. Yes, I'm THAT old. I doubt he ever sang a bad song. "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is one of my favorites. "Annie's Song" and "Sunshine on My Shoulders" are good, too. With those you get kind of an innocent seventies vibe.

Memories of my childhood! John Denver was so popular and he was such a great singer-songwriter. Sadly, we lost him too soon in a plane crash. He had a ton of hits and so much good stuff but I would also say that one of his biggest hits and also a huge fan favorite is his iconic Country Roads Take Me Home. With people from my generation, if this song ever came on or anybody at all started singing the chorus of it, people would just start singing along. For some really up-tempo stuff, check out his hit Thank God I'm a Country Boy, and, fan favorite, Grandma's Feather Bed. 😊

I really enjoyed your reactiuon to John Denver's Rocky Mountain High. You may not be aware that after John's death in a tragic flying accident in October 1997 Rocky Mountain high was selected by the State of Colorado as one of its official State Songs. The honours didn't end there, with Take Me Home, Country Roads being also selected as a state song for West Viorginia, which makes John Denver the only 20th cebntury artist to have two state songs. Also, as a matter of interest, the album cover photo for Rocky Mountain High has inspired a tourist attraction in Colorado. John is shown standing on a rock in the wild Roaring Fork River, quite close to his home in Aspen. To this day that rock is widely known as Rocky Mountain High Rock and it is visited quite often by fans who want to be photographed there as John was many many years ago.

He says "The Colorado Rocky Mountain High! I've seen it raining fire in the sky" very well said because when the Spanish Explorers first explored the area they also saw that red sky and thats why they named the area COLORADO which in Spanish means RED!

Really cool that you chose one this one all on your own. Take Me Home Country Roads was the best known American song in China. May still be, or at least up there, and that's not the only country. They sing it all over the world, including German beer halls. Thank God I'm a Country Boy is definitely a fun song that I would also recommend.

I must say you have a knack for finding some great songs on your own, and this is another example. I won’t bother to give suggestions because you’re already being bombarded with them. John Denver was really in a category all his own. He came along at just the right time, too. In the late sixties and early seventies young people (and some older ones) were very much into getting back to nature and re-evaluating the priorities they had been taught. His music was perfect for the times and the times were perfect for his music. I’m so glad you discovered him. BTW, you did sound like you know who. I knew exactly who you meant before you even said anything about being political. Let’s go Brandon!
