Hi Sarah! I was born in a major American city and we visited my Gramma on her farm outside of a small town every summer. When I was 11, we moved to our own home outside of a small town. It was MISERABLE! The kids hated me on sight. Thankfully there were enough adults around to keep me from losing my mind. I love John Mellencamp! I saw him at Farm Aid when I was 19. He is a darling! Small towns are shrinking rapidly . Post offices are only open until noon.

It is one of the central themes of the so called "Heartland Rock" to look back in a wistful manner at the times of childhood and when a boy became a man. Look at Kid Rock's "All Summer long", Bryan Adam's "Summer of 69", Springsteen's "My Hometown" and "Glory Days", Bob Seger's "Night Moves", Mellencamp's "Cherry Bomb" etc.

John's style of singing or genre is called heartland rock as he sang a lot about blue-collar, farmers & truckers themes. He has had so many hits especially in the 80's such as "Pink Houses", "Jack & Diane", "Hurts So Good", "Crumblin' Down", "Lonely Ol' Night", "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.", "Paper In Fire", "Cherry Bomb" etc.

I saw Mellencamp (He was known as John Cougar then) open for Rainbow in 1979 at the Oakland Auditorium. Randy Hansen followed Mellencamp, then finally Rainbow. The crowd only wanted to see Rainbow (Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple on guitar), and they booed Mellencamp and chanted "Blackmore, Blackmore" loudly as the band tried to perform. After just a song or two, Mellencamp flipped off the crowd, and the band left the stage. I was standing right in front of the stage, and felt embarrassed to be part of that crowd. I would never think of berating a performer the way this crowd did. This may have been Mellencamp's first Oakland or Bay Area appearance, I'm not sure. He deserved better, the band was talented, but it was not the type of music the crowd came to see.

Crazy thing about small towns is some of the world's best in sports/acting come from them, like NBA legends Larry Bird, (French Lick, Indiana,) and Jerry West (Cabin Creek, Virginia) or Actors Chris Evans (Captain America) and Action hero/World Karate Champion Chuck Norris. I feel they build character because you have to work harder to make a living-most of the jobs are manual labor. I live in one, ( 8,800) don't feel strongly about it as John, but do admit I like it, and his lyrics on this nice song.
