He intentionally waited until his health was declining to record this. After the pneumonia that started his decline the amount of time he could sing was greatly curtailed. He waited until singing hurt would put a strain on him to convey it was the end to everyone who heard it. If you listen to other songs first you can hear him strain and struggle to make it through this.

This song was made and written by Nine Inch Nails. The leader singer made this song about a middle aged mans life spiraling out of control and losing the ones around him due to death and drugs/ overdoses'. Johnny Cash took the song changed one word and made it about and old man looking back on his life losing those around him due to age and what year to year can do to a friendship. Nine Inch Nails lead singer wasn't happy about this because the song was soooo personal to him. Once he heard the song he said, "this is now cash's song". Cash is the ONLY person in the Country Hall of Fame, Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, AND the Songwriters Hallo of Fame. You could literally write a Harry Potter 10 book story about this man's life and still have chapters left out... During this song his wife passed away. His daughter told him that this song sounds like he is saying goodbye... Johnny replied, "I am saying goodbye; I miss my June (wife June Carter)". Johnny passed away like 4 months after releasing this song.... RIP Legend.

Neither Johnny Cash nor Trent Reznor were keen to the idea, before recording it. Rick Rubin (who produced the album this cover is on) brought the idea to both of them. Cash was more receptive, taking less time/convincing (of course, since recording comes prior to hearing final product)

The interview with Trent Reznor (lead singer of Nine Inch Nails) was really interesting. He was against remaking it because he just didn't think it would work. But when he heard the final cut he equated it a girlfriend being happier with another man. He just had to let go. The song was Cash's now.

Johnny Cash's father, in a drunken state, once told him that he wished Johnny had died instead of his brother Jack. That was probably one of the reasons he was so messed up for a large part of his life.

Johnny was 74, but was in constant pain from illness for the last 10 years of his life, thats why he looked so old. This song is a Nine Inch Nails song written by Trent Reznor, the lead singer. When he wrote it, he didn't know that it would end up being prophetic of his own life. He wasn't a junkie when he wrote and recorded it, but within 2 years he was. Johnny recorded this song about 2 years after Reznor got out of rehab. It was produced by a friend of Reznor"s. He was flattered that Johnny wanted to do it, but he felt weird about it when he heard the recording, becuase it was someone else singing about something that was so personal to him. A few weeks later he saw the music video ( a video that won numerous awards BTW) and said that he finally understood, and that the song was no longer his. Also in the video was his wife June Cater Cash, standing on the steps behind him. She died very very soon after the video was made, and Johnny followed 4 months later.

One of the worst things about getting old is that you lose your friends to accidents, disease and other things. You get older and really regret some discissions you made and things you have said. Its really hard on you as you realize your in the last chapter of life. Being lonely, becoming disabled and have a really hard time doing stuff. I guess thats one of the reasons I enjoy these reaction videos as it reminds me of my days of glory and to see a young generation seeing what our lives and culture was like in the past makes you proud you were a part of it. The Nine Inch Nails song was done in the 90's and is totally different. When Trent Reznor, who is NIN lead singer and writer of the song, heard Johnny's version he said it's Cash's song now. He embodied the lyrics in a completely different way. Great interview about how Rick Rubin had Johnny perform many other modern artists. The part when he says "You could have it all. My empire of dirt." brings me to tears every time. They show his awards, his records, all of his achievements and accomplishments, he sits at a table in a throne with a feast in front of him, representing all of the things he accomplished in his life, the wealth he accumulated, and he's literally saying, mostly to his late wife, that he would give it all up if he could just have more time with her. He struggled heavily with alchohol addiction throughout his life, so it hits even harder as you see his trembling hand pour the wine out across the table. He's acknowledging all the people he hurt in his life, the way his alchoholism destroyed his life and the lives of everyone around him, and in the end he says "If I could start again, a million miles away. I would keep myself, I would find a way." Everything he's done, all the art he's made, all the awards, the movies, the records, the fame, the fortune, it's all dirt. It's meaningless. He would give it all away if he could just do it all over again, but he can't.

Was ONLY into hip-hop when the movie came out and saw it with a fam member in theater. That movie was such a success, it's what started the "High Budget Biopic" trend in the past decade or so... But it is so relatable and could be applied to anyone who struggles with a life of regret. Johnny did a cover of it. This was his last release before he passed away. The way he presents the internal struggle of having it all at one point in time and reflecting about how he would give it ALL away to never lose himself. Lots of people have made songs about this but Johnny’s hits different because of how old he was when he performed it. He ACTUALLY had the ability to reflect and really felt deep in a hole because he knows IF he could go back and “keep myself” he would find a way. But the hard truth is he cannot, you cannot, I cannot, NOBODY can. His wife June on the stairs, she wasn't supposed to be in this video but came downstairs out of concern for him as he was terminally ill, that look on her face is genuine so they left it in. Cash is beyond legend, 100 lifetimes of pain shown on that face, none of us could survive 10% of what he went through but he was his own worst enemy but found redemption anyway. He was an original rock and roll artist from the 50's and he's right up there with Elvis, Chuck Berry and the rest. It's my good fortune I saw him and his wife perform close up back in 1980 and I still remember being so awestruck I couldn't believe it. His life was on a downward spiral until he met June Carter. She was the love of his life. He had so many hits over the course of his life. He was a legend.

I am 40 years old. I watched 100s of reactors watch this video and everytime I watch because this song is amazing. This song makes me cry everytime. I cried this time aswell. Life relections and reflections on regret is this song wrapped in a bow. Trent really did an amazing job writing this song and Johnny killed singing it. Both different versions are amazing.

I love seeing how Johnny Cash affects people. He crosses genre's, age groups and will forever live on! The Stephanie wasn't his last song though he recorded 72 songs after his wife passed away before his own death. Thanks for this video!

Trent Reznor talks about the fact that while he wrote this song, it really belongs to Johnny Cash now. An all-time baller move by Reznor to respect a legend like that. Still, Reznor's version is a classic in its own right. Give the live version a listen if you get a chance.

He recorded this song for his wife as she was dying. Far to few people these days know the love story of June Carter and Johnny Cash. It's a love story to rival Romeo and Juliet or Anthony and Cleopatra. He died within months of his life time love and true soul mate. I hope they are singing Jackson wherever they are now. RIP June and Johnny.

Johnny was THE MAN. Not afraid to try different musical styles. He had a bad problem with drinking and pills, his 2nd wife June Carter and her family helped him get clean and gk on for many more decades sober. Listen to his beautuful duet "I Miss Someone" with his daughter Roseanne Cash...fantastic.

That's just left me speechless and in tears. He had one more song he wrote just before his death. However, he died before they could complete the video. So out of respect, several celebrities, artists and singers helped finish the video. It's called "God's gonna cut you down" and it's worth seeing. Also, "Man in Black" and "A boy named Sue" are really great songs. The last one is best live and is from when he went to play at Folsom Prison I believe, might've been San Quentin.

Johnny had many great songs, A boy Named Sue, Burnin Ring of Fire, Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk the Line, God’s Gonna Cut You Down and Rugged Old Flag just to name a few. He recorded 1500 song, had 91 albums and wrote 61 songs. He acted in at least 24 movies and many TV Shows. He was also in the Air Force from 1950 to 1954 he was a Staff Sergeant. His music is what was called Rockabilly. The video for this song was filmed at the House of Cash a museum for his career. At the time of the filming the museum was closed due to rapairs needed.
