GOOSEBUMPS. One of the most beautiful song ever sung. Sadly lost him in an airplane accident in 1985. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing back good memories.😊❤

His name is pronounced like the letter 'Q' Sakamoto. He died in the crash of JAL 123 Aug. 12, 1985. The pilots struggled with the plane for so long, he had time to write a letter to his wife and daughter before the plane hit the mountain. He is still mourned in Japan. R.I.P. Kyu-kun.

The Song is actually called "Ue o Muite Aruko" (that's the "I look up when I walk" line) But when it came to the west in the early 60s, "Sukiyaki" was one of the only Japanese words people knew. So they called it that. It might as well be titled "You know, That Japanese Song."

I love that "Japanese" song. I was in Dallas, Texas fixing to fly back home when I heard he had been killed. I had flown into Dallas a week before the plane crash at the Dallas-Ft. Worth airport (still could see where the crash site was), now I'm fixing to fly home. Not a very good feeling about flying that day.

It's like if a Japanese record label retitled an American song to "Beef Stew" so people would know it was in English.

"Sukiyaki" topped the charts in a number of countries, including the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. The song grew to become one of the world's best-selling singles of all time, selling over 13 million copies worldwide.

I was a teen when this was played on pop stations. I believe he scored a #1 hit here in America. I loved it then and still enjoy hearing it. I have the original 45 and prefer that version. Sadly, I heard that he passed away, I believe in a plane crash, in his 40's.

Ooooh I actually think this is named Ue O Muite Arukou (I look up while I walk)! lol it’s one of the most famous Enka songs here in Japan. So many artists have covered it. Enka an is amazing genre. One of the best of the bests is Hibari Misora, she was amazing and she does cover this song too.

This is one of my favorite songs. You chose an okay performance from late in his career. I'm used to the one which was played on the radio in the early 1960s. Both he and I were much younger, and the song was less produced. I think he could whistle better when he was younger.

Interesting fact about this song is that it's a coded protest song meant to be able to pass as a love song. Standing all alone is both about lost love and the feeling of a protest failing.

One of the most sampled melodies in R&B and Hip Hop. The first song I think of when I hear Sukiyaki is La Di Da Di by Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick. Beautiful song that lives on through music today.

I always appreciate watching people react for the first time to songs that I've been listening to for years. It always reminds me how I reacted the first time I heard those songs. I appreciate the fact that you're videos encompass all eras of music. Have you ever heard "into the mystic", by Van Morrison? Even if you don't do a video on this song, it is something that you really got to hear if you never have. God bless you and have a great day.

You need to listen to his original recording from the early 60s, when he was in his early 20s....now that was smooth!...This recording would have been done not too long before his tragic death in the 1985 crash of JAL 123, the worst single air crash in aviation history....that is a story worth looking up, because of the skill of the pilots who kept the plane in the air for over 30 min in their attempt to return to the airport....RIP Kyu Sakamoto.....PS: The original B&W recording of a very young Kyu is available on YT,

Try listening to an earlier version. When he sang it in the early 60's. There was more whistling & his voice was much smoother. I always enjoy hearing this song over the decades since its release. Very rare to hear now. Great song & singer nonetheless.

I coined the flight club 2 years ago for artists who died in avian calamities a second to the more known 27 Club of Brian Jones and Janis Joplin fame the flight club at its top has artists like Jim Reeves, Buddy Holly, and Patsy Cline! I hope this thing will grow like the 27 Club! soo many artists died in avian accidents let's put all of that in one place aka the Flight Club!

Isn't this an american song? Slick Rick sang it in La Di Da Di, the classic rap song by Dougie Fresh and the Get Fresh Crew. They had to cut it out for rights issues so it's only in some versions. Here it is....I guess they just gave it English lyrics: A Taste of Honey - Sukiyaki (1980). I think of it as "you took your love away from me", lol.

It's a song of contrasts. A light and happy musical arrangements with lyrics about longing and sadness written in the aftermath of so much loss during the war. The song was renamed after a Japanese stew by a British man, which is pretty disrespectful of both the song, language, and culture. I think the song is called "Oe i muite arukou" now.

Really poor sounding recording of a great classic. I detect distortion, over modulations and even the crowd is clapping out of sync. Too bad that's the best version you came up with, but that's life. I thought it was illegal to play somebody's songs over KZbin without having to pay performance and copyright realities. Any entertainment attorneys out there that know the answer? Most people think is ok, until they get sued.
